"What track (or Album) marks the beginning of the New Jack Swing Era?"

I purposely avoided the "What is the first new Jack Swing Track" because I think that turns into a race to find oldest track that sort of sounds like a NJS track (kind of like those silly arguments when people point to old blue grass tracks as the first hip-hop songs).

What I am looking for the track or album that kicks off the era fully and undeniably and the impact is evident. Not sure if it works that way but worth discussing.

So not really looking for the origins of NJS (though I'd be interested to hear that as well), but the coming of age as an identifiable thing.

I'd say "Don't Be Cruel" (song & album) but I also seem to think that Guy's "Groove Me" (and the self-titled album) dropped right around the same time.

Teddy Riley's reign was just taking off.

trying to pin down what defines a genre is a tricky business...especially a sub-genre like NJS (or, alternately, "neo-soul" as another example) which fused some stuff

all those posted above have very similar elements in terms of "sound"/vibe

more often than not we coin these terms as marketing buzzwords and then they become a nebulous thing which ends up losing meaning and then being rejected (e.g "...and you can new jack swing on my nuts" or "..rap is not pop if you call it that then stop", etc)

Timex and NJS elements.
Janet's Nasty had the elements as well.
But NJS is/was Teddy and his crew

I Want Her was late 87 and then came Kemp's Just Got Paid in early 88
Then Guy and Al B in the spring followed by Bobby in the summer.

you could say

others could say

"Teddy gets all the credit"

either way, you saw what was listed first as an answer to the OP

right. kedar coined the term "neo-soul," so technically, the first NS album is "brown sugar."

man, I despise that label, though. all marketing.

...was trying to figure out what to do with HipHop when it became more obvious this new style had actual legs

after "rockit" was so popular there were a ton of R&B songs with beats you could pop to and "raps" sprinkled in

Since it may not have officially been labeled as NJS back then, but it had the same sound/swing to it, just a bit more Industrial

definitely was a change in the sound anticipating what was coming. In particularly, "Nasty". But that more or less stayed with Jam/Lewis.

Though Teddy was like 80% of NJS on his own, you had that sound spreading out beyond his production. In a way, he "Princed" it.
