"blues & soul magazine's top 100 soul albums of all time (1998 swipe)"
Thu May-28-15 04:51 PM by GumDrops

i remember a post about great soul albums on the lesson a while back, with some posters saying that they didnt think there was a canon for the genre... well this might be a good place to start. my gripes would be that i dont see the need for rap albums to be on here, some of the picks are kinda safe (live at the apollo vs love power peace?), and they should allow for greatest hits compilations - otis redding and al greens' greatest hits cds are actually their best albums IMO. they did get the right mary j album though.

1. Luther doesn't have a self-titled album. OH SHIT...yes he does! it was released in 2001. and it is FAR FROM BEING his best album.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luther_Vandross_%28album%29

2. there's only ONE Stevie Wonder album on it.

3. and it's not Innervisions.

4. Curtis over Superfly???

5. Stand at 66???

6. Soul II Soul's 'Club Classics' is ranked higher than Stand.

...i can't go on.

hell no.

fuck you.

it should read 'eponymous (first solo)' for luther. i think they mean never too much (was it released as 'luther vandross' at one point? i didnt think so but n/m)

not sure why theres a riot going on isnt on here, but i think a list like this would be quite diff to 1998. pop snobbery would be less okay, so thriller would be in there, there would be more stevie, more george clinton, prob LESS curtis, more sly, basically more of the people who dangelo have namechecked, there would have to be SOME prince, prob some rick james, and then there'd be reissues like inspiration information, betty davis, maybe william onyeabor, some disco i imagine, and albums like miseducation, mamas gun, black messiah or voodoo maybe, amy winehouse, etc....

and show that they didnt disown rap.

queen pen and black street are kinda 'huh' but hey, it was 1998. they had to have *something* recent.

even if they are important. then the list would just be 6 stevie albums, 3 sly albums, etc etc. it would mean the smaller, but still good albums, would be excluded.

thriller doesnt really need to be there. everyone knows about it already.

it meant everything from R&B to Pop and it covered all the bases and it was a game changer.

that's like saying the Chronic doesn't belong, if a album is a game changer from the music perspective and it happens to be a big timer seller well it all balances out.

if said big artists like MJ, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye,Rick James, R.Kelly,Earth,Wind and Fire, Isley Brothers, etc.. were white

then a white publication would have about 3 of their best albums all over the list.

i mean its one thing if somebody wants to acknowledge Shuggie Ottis's information society album or a album by Bobbi Humphrey however
when somebody puts a album by Joi or somebody who was decent but not that kind of impact artistry well it looks suspect.
