"Spin: The 300 Best Albums of the Past 30 Years - 1985-2014 (link)"

I guess they only allow a certain amount of rap albums to be on the list but Death Certificate should be on here and ATLiens > Stankonia

By: Spin Staff May 11, 2015

SPIN hit a milestone this year: Our 30th birthday. To celebrate, we caught up with some of the artists behind our past picks for Album of the Year, held a readers’ poll, reminisced with former staffers, and now, we’ve ranked the 300 best albums of the past 30 years.

Drawing on ballots from more than a dozen contributors, the editors whittled a roster of just under 1,000 nominees to a list of undisputed masterpieces, longtime pleasures, and new favorites — all of them classics (well, according to us).

Before we get started, some ground rules: To prevent certain artists from having a stranglehold on the countdown (Radiohead and Kanye West come to mind immediately), we decided that no single act could have more than three entries on the list; studio albums were eligible, of course, as were EPs and live albums; compilations qualified only if the songs featured were most closely associated with said collection.

Accounting for (and arguing over) 30 years of music is quite an undertaking, but we’re sure you’ll let us know of any oversights. (Don’t be afraid to let us know which picks you agree with, either.) And with that…

Noticed that College Dropout was ranked far above Late Reg. Life After Death got the nod over Ready to Die (which may not have even been ranked?) The Blueprint was ranked above Illmatic which is BEYOND laughable. Life After Death was almost 100 spots above Doggystyle which is the definition of insanity.

I don't even know why I look at these lists any longer.

eliciting anger is half the point of lists like this, just so Spin is in people mouths/on people's computer/smartphone screens.

I'm glad Bizarre Ride is on the list, but the number of rap albums that appear at a lower number is insane.

It's just a joke at the end of the day.

My main issue is that an artist needs to hit a certain benchmark of success/popularity before they're even considered for a list like this.

They got the Jay-Z Album Ranking right...I question how high Blueprint is though...shouldn't be above Illmatic...

The Roots get one album on the list and it's Rising Down? Like when I saw that Rising Down made the list I was like...okay well TFA, Phrenology, Illadelph, Game Theory, Undun, and DYWM made the list...and they weren't there...

Happy Run The Jewels 2 and Acid Rap made the list...

No Drake albums should be on this list...

Fishscale over Supreme Clientele?

Not a single Redman album?

Blueprint is THEE most overrated hip-hop album of all-time and no it shouldn't above Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt or many other albums on the list as well as ones that didn't make the list.

I agree, Rising Down is not a good album at all. All of the ones you listed are better.

>Happy Run The Jewels 2 and Acid Rap made the list...

I think both of those albums are overrated and neither would be on the list for me.

>No Drake albums should be on this list...

Agreed. Should t be on this list or any list.

Ironman is better than both.

Killer Mike himself would heavily disagree with any of his material being better than Amerikka's Most, Run The Jewels included.

I have to imagine Spin generated a ton of click-bait ad revenue with that list. Good on them.

from that time period. Something like "this is the album we've ALWAYS wanted to make but weren't able to," in the context of a conversation about their label politics and things like that. Then I heard it, and liked it well enough....but was like, *this* is that album? Couldn't believe it.

No "pacer" by The Amps (Kim Deal)

No "breath from Another" by Esthero

No "first band on the moon" by The Cardigans

No "tomorrow hit today" by Mudhoney

No "End hits" by Fugazi ("Repeater" is just a-ight)

No "tiny music: songs from the Vatican gift shop" by Stone Temple Pilots

No "Worldwide underground" by Erykah Badu

No "hello" by Poe

I know "smiles like a shark" by Mulu and "Trippin'" by Jean-Paul Bourelly and "time to fall in love again" by Faith (NYC - Felice Rosser) wouldn't get on the list (or "Lunar Crush" by David Fiuczynski and John Medeski) but...

the others I listed.....lacking those albums makes the list blah, esp. with some of the ones on there that shouldn't be...

In response to Reply # 14

Repeater isn't the one I would have picked either but it feels like the natural pick since 13 songs isn't really an album but more a comp (and no, I wouldn't have picked that one either).

End Hits is an example of Fugazi experimenting and stretching out (and IMO doing a worse job than on Red Medicine or even the Argument); it's NOT really an example of the sound that would revolutionize the post-hardcore scene and with which they are strongly associated with the way "Repeater" or "13 songs are"...

Personally, my favorites are Red Medicine, Steady diet of nothing and In on the Killtaker with Repeater taking fourth place and either End Hits OR the Argument on spot 5. I like all their records to various extent except maybe the groundbreaking EPs collected on 13 songs which sound a bit too "common" today.

Anyway, "End Hits" is neither one of their most critically acclaimed, most popular *or* most influential records so it's not a record whose absence I think is worthy of mention when it comes to a list compiled by fucking Spin-it's more a fan favourite at best...

And "Tomorrow hits today"? I like that record somewhat but "Every good boy deserves fudge" would be the most obvious pick, both in terms of acclaim, popularity and status amongst fans (the first record was technically an EP before it got expanded). It's also their best by a fairly far margin IMO...

I like the riff but the self-consciously esoteric production just reeks of a certain, lame 90's-early 00's vibe they should leave to acts like Radiohead...

And while Floating Boy contains some cool parts, it seems like an awkward attempt at being proggy with the structure and, again, the production blows.

I'm straight with the rest though but not much I'd put on a personal comp outside of "Break" which I think is their best opener/"intro" and "Closed captioned" which might be their best "dubby" song even if the competition is stiff...

Also, the album as a *whole* seems more like a collection of songs than coherent, it's their worst in that regards and again, much of the production is an exercise in lame post-"Downward spiral but organic!" gimmickry

I could complain about them leaving the Cherubs "Heroin Man" out or Trumans Water or Jesus Lizard's "Goat" and "Liar" or Polvo's "Todays active lifestyles" or Royal Trux "Cats+dogs" or (insert something I dug a lot and still do) not to mention several Hip-Hop albums, about a dozen metal records and even a bunch of jazz-ones. However, I know WHY they left them out and that's because it's SPIN, the bastion of "mainstream alternative" and "semi-edgy", I mean, come on...

the absence of Jesus Lizard DOES offend me though, seems like they self-consciously ignore even the bigger non-artsy noise-rock bands of the era. Whatever..

which might not even be a Top 5 PJ album anyway but the fact that SPIN, of all places, didn't rank To Bring You My Love in their Top 300 (when they had it as like #2 or #3 for the magazine's biggest decade, the 90's) shows they don't even know who they are anymore in this post-internet/MTV/Pitchfork world which is probably a big part of the reason they aren't in print anymore and why no one cares.

LISTS \

Breaking Down SPIN’s List of the 300 Best Albums From the Past 30 Years

What years had the most albums on the list, which artists make it on more than three times, and more

By: James Grebey // May 14, 2015

For our 30th anniversary, SPIN ranked the 300 Best Albums to come out since 1985 when the magazine was first published. It was a massive undertaking that yielded a massive list, and we’re sure many readers have taken the time to parse through, pick apart, and find things to agree or vehemently disagree with. Because it’s a lot to take in, we took the time to break the list down a little bit, and make some of the trends and facts a bit more digestible.

What Years Had the Most and Fewest Albums on the List?

Unsurprisingly, 2014 had the fewest albums on the list, with only four making the cut (Parquet Courts’ Sunbathing Animal, the War on Drugs’ Lost in the Dream, Sun Kil Moon’s Benji, and Run the Jewels’ Run the Jewels 2). The year with the second-fewest albums was 1988 — only five LPs from that year were included. At the top of the pack, blowing away the competition, was 1994, with a whopping 21 records. It was a good year. The beginning of the new millennium snagged second, with 16 albums from the year 2000 making it onto the list. In general, the mid and late ’90s placed very, very well. Here’s the full breakdown:

4 albums – 2014

5 albums – 1988

7 albums – 2004, 2009, 2012

8 albums – 1985, 1992, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2013

9 albums – 1990, 2001, 2006, 2007

10 albums – 1986

11 albums – 1989, 1991, 1998, 2010

12 albums – 1987, 1993, 1997, 2002

13 albums – 1995, 1996, 1999

16 albums – 2000

21 albums – 1994

What Years Had the Most Albums in the Top 25?

The top 25 was dominated by the ’80s and ’90s, as every year in those decades had at least one album near the top of the list — except for poor 1995. The 21st century didn’t fare as well, with only five albums from just three years making the top 25. Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was the most recent LP in the top 25, having been released in 2010. D’Angelo’s 2000 masterpieceVoodoo represented that year’s only entry into the elite class, and 2001 and 1994 both had three entries apiece in the top 25. The full breakdown is below:

Years with one album in the top 25: 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010

Years with two albums in the top 25 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997

Years with three albums in the top 25: 1994, 2001

What Artists Had Three Albums Make the List?

We made a rule that no artist could have more than three albums on our list to prevent it from being dominated by just a few musicians. Aphex Twin, Beastie Boys, Janet Jackson, Jay Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Nirvana, Pavement, Pixies, Radiohead, Sleater-Kinney, and Sonic Youth were the 12 artists with the maximum three albums on the list.

Did Anybody Make it on the List More Than Three Times?

Technically, yes. Kim Deal made it on the list three times with the Pixies, and then a fourth time for the Breeders’ Last Splash. Ghostface Killah also made it on the list four times, for his albums Supreme Clientele and Fishscale, as part of the Wu-Tang Clan, and as the listed “guest star” on Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Several rappers made it on multiple times through features on other albums, but those don’t quite count.

What Were the Albums That Just Missed the List?

301. Slowdive, Souvlaki (Creation, 1993)

302. Pearl Jam, Ten (Epic, 1991)

303. Best Coast, Crazy for You (Mexican Summer, 2010)

304. Talking Heads, Little Creatures (Sire, 1985)

305. The-Dream, Love-Hate (Radio Killa, 2007)

What was the Biggest Fight the Staff Had While Making the List?

Daft Punk (Discovery, No. 4) vs. Prince (Sign o’ the Times, No. 3). It got ugly.

Maybe I'm just old but come on. And I like that Daft Punk record but still... are they considered THAT significant?

I guess they are and I'm just out of the loop...

The irony is that SPIN were VERY late on catching on to "electronic" music compared with, say, the british mags with a similar focus (think NME, Melody Maker etc.) and yes, there are obvious reasons for this based on its popularity in UK vs USA, I guess "Discovery" was kind of when they got hip to it so it's kind of a watershed album in US music criticism I suppose...
