Granted, it is their most well known song, but I'd never consider them to be one hit wonders. And the album is full of classic songs, but not necessarily singles.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

What other song do they have that's as well known as 93 'til? That's if we're considering 93 'til a hit.

A group like Souls was essentially a group for Heads who had a single that non-Heads paid attention to for 5 minutes. Yes, they only had one of those. But they another 3 or 4 big songs with videos that Heads loved.

I guess it all depends on how you define hit.

I think to some extent looking for further mainstream success out of them post-No Man's Land kinda misses the point. They made a concerted decision to go the independent route post '95, and pretty much created the blueprint for independent success for '90s rappers once signed to a major label to follow. And if you want to say, "Well, that's fine, but we're talking about major label success here," then it's weird to bring up their album with Adrian Younge in the same convo.

And I think it doesn't fit, given their status as indie icons, to have them in some conversation as an artist like Boss, who did one other song after the "Born Gangstaz" album.

it's not like they quit making music after their successes. they figured out who their audience was and tailored. I was listening to them (and other Hiero-related acts) pretty much through the '00s.

it's a lot of people with a "hit" that struggled to find that much.

good thing with the Boss comparison; she got the weirdest pre- "Summerjam Screen" treatment I'd ever seen of an artist (why would The Wall Street Journal of all publications write such an article about her)?

She was interviewed by the Wall St. Journal after the album dropped and she admitted that her "gangsta" persona was all an act, and that she'd grown up in a relatively priviledged upper-middle class family.

There's a skit on the album which lightweight acknowledges it too, but the Wall St. Journal article was pretty fucking blatant.

Even though I'd say they're closer to one-hit wonders than Souls. Lunatik Muzik banged tho. And they had appearances on way too many great Bay Area-oriented tracks. I'm probably just biased towards Bay artists.

Lunatik Muzik banged hard as hell and was actually a better album IMO. Just didn't have the big single like the first album.

in the popularity sense; I don't really know if that is deniable outside of oakland. That said, their debut album is one of my favorite albums of all time and their most recent album with Adrian Young was one of my favorite albums of last year

multiple radio friendly records. Or with groups who had one big song, then faded into obscurity shortly thereafter. That's why it feels weird to call "The Luniz" & Souls of Mischief" one hit wonders. But all "one hit wonder" really means is that you have one song that overshadows the rest of your work. Both groups fit that mold.

Let my love slide in and never slip out
