"Poll question: dr. dre vs. shock g (who's the better producer?)"

who is the better producer?

i think shock g is actually better than dr. dre even though he doesn't get the recognition he deserves as a producer.

i know many will come in this thread and be like "uh, dr. dre produced the chronic and doggystyle" but if you remember shock g produced digital underground's sex packets and sons of the p albums and both of those albums are 2 of the most underrated hip hop albums, especially sons of the p.

what are your thoughts?

Poll result (23 votes)
dr. dre (11 votes)Vote
shock g (12 votes)Vote

And Shock produced Round & Round, and So many tears.

But against Dre? Nope.

I MIGHT argue him against Battlecat, Ant Banks, or Daz..and would say he's above Bosko. But for West Coast, Dre and Quik are surely above him.

He doesn't get the props he deserves. But nah, not Dre.

dr. dre has never really had a "sound" of his own

world class wreckin' cru = disco
n.w.a.'s straight outta compton = public enemy's the bomb squad sound
n.w.a.'s niggaz4life = the start of usin' big hutch's g funk
the chronic = big hutch's g funk mastered
doggystyle = big hutch's g funk in full swing
2001 = scott storch and mel-man

now this isn't to discredit him at all. dr. dre has an ear for sound, he just doesn't have his own really. i would say he's the best if he had his own sound but he doesn't and shock does.

the one thing i can say about dr. dre is he a master of mastering different sounds and he's got a ear for what sounds great. but most producers have their own sound and he doesn't.

oh yeah and dr. dre is one hell of mixer. he's one of the best mixers

In response to Reply # 2

He may be using a style that existed before he got his hands on it but he does have his own distinctive sound. You can pretty much tell his style of G Funk from producer X's brand of G Funk. Your argument would be like saying Pete Rock doesn't have his own sound because he didn't start Boom Bap or Curtis Mayfield doesn't have his own distictive sound because he didn't invent soul music.

...and was able to pick up that it was him based on style alone. Not the mix but just the style. Dre has his own style. I'm not sure how you can't tell outside of the mix.

only person out west who can hang with dr dre is dj quik and quik will be the first to tell you that he is still two elevators flights from catching dr dre.

yeah i loved sex packets and sons of the pop and I will give you him doing the P funk thing before other cats.

however while talented the gimmicks and the lack of important records and hits did him in IMO.

Shock G's track record is like Usher's my way album whereas Dr Dre got the thriller of rap albums with the chronic.

it ain't just about sales and hits either, dre hit hard.

shock g had that chance, however he didn't connect like dre.

i know hating on dr Dre and history is fashionable, however everybody knows Dr Dre been through so many changes in rap music and still comes out smelling like a rose.

Dr Dre is the Quincy Jones of Rap Producers. live with it.

Shock G had a moment or two whereas Dr Dre had a movement big difference in styles and sounds

Mufuckas don't realize how dope Shock was over the years. That brother is a genius.
Dre is good for knowing what people will be into. He's a better pop producer.
He ain't half as creative as Gregory Jacobs the piano man tho. Most of Dre's biggest shit
has been straight up APED. Not creative reworks in the vein of, say a Dilla. Dre loved
funk and added bass and knock to some of his favorite funk songs and melodies.
Shock G actually made funk from the (under)ground up.

I can't say who's better, but I can say Shock got the shit I actually feel, and he's
actually got the music IN him.

what else is there, album-wise and song-wise? all suggestions are
appreciated, i've heard all dre's stuff but barely any shock and
i'd like to change that.

Shock G did his remix slowing down DMSR sideways just how he did "shes always in my hair.

however when prince had that singles cd for the most beautiful girl in the world" he had a chronic freeze mix. he was feeling Dr Dre big time on some of his 93-95 material. you can't avoid Dr Dre in the bigger picture

Shock G. has produced some great tunes that many don't even realize cause he's a rapper and he also can play instruments and a beat-maker; while Dr. Orchestrate hardly produces, he's known for taking credit for other people's work and when he does produce it's just a simple beat, and he can't play instruments like Shock. G. can, nor can Dr. write his own rhymes or got flows like Shock G. aka Humpty Hump.

Personally I never liked his rhyming or his production even the stuff he does with r&b kats, it's not like he's talented or got beats, I know that I just don't care for him like that; especially when you put him up over Dr.Orchestrate maybe okp likes him better, Dre got him beat even though Dre isn't no where on my lists either.
