I've yet to get hooked on anything else he's done.

What he tends to go for on bass hasn't really knocked me out from the little I've heard of his music.

I definitely want to get more familiar with his music at some point.

>where you come down on him as a Bass Player?

One of the GOAT.

>his work with Return to Forever?

Classic.

>His solo Career?

A mixed bag. I think working in RTF kept him grounded. His solo albums made in those years were generally great. Working with George Duke made his work even better.

>His work with George Duke and others?

The first Clarke/Duke album was a classic. Duke finally got Stan to come out of his "alt-Black" shell a lil bit and he was on a nice lil R&B run for a few years.

Now the subsequent Clarke/Duke albums (particularly the second one) didn't hit like the first one did, but there was some good stuff on there.

I think as a producer, he is very underrated. For some reason on his own albums, he had a hard time getting the R&B stuff down right (at least before Time Exposure), though I will ride for I WANNA PLAY FOR YOU (that title track especially) all day; his work as producer for Rodney Franklin and Ramsey Lewis must be heard.

>his SOundtrack score work?

Underrated. I think he did a great job on Boyz N The Hood; though it took me a while to figure out it was him.

>you find him funky or mellow?

He can be both. You have to prod him to be the former sometimes; he's kind of got "NyQuil" (© O_E) qualities as a bass player. When he's there, he's one of the best.

>is he on your mount Rushmore of Jazz Bass Players?

Absolutely. With Marcus Miller and others.

>what you think of him in the R&B/Pop world when he has done
>work over there?

A mixed bag. I actually like his singing.
Some of my favorite albums he's ever recorded are the ones that immediately followed Clarke/Duke: I Want To Know You, Time Exposure, Find Out! "Heaven Sent" from Time Exposure is a must listen. Because Howard Hewett sings it, they think it's his song, though.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.
