I know what it's about; but I'd like ya'll to give your input. It's one of Prince's most baffling songs, I think most people just chalked it up to him being weird/gay/whatever.

That's exactly right. According to his engineer at the time, If I was Ur Girlfriend was a desperate plea from Prince to Susannah Melvoin for the kind of friendship closeness she experienced with her sister.

Sisquo sounded amazing on that, imo... plus his background vocals were on FLEEK while Mariah sang. And it was one of the few times that the new whisper-y Mariah actually fit the song. I remember hearing that back then and it was one of the few times a remake gave me a new appreciation for something I'd loved since it was made. They brought a whole different level of soul, sensuality and longing to it. I can admit that it took me years to actually appreciate it tho, because I didn't wanna hear them remake that song, so I dismissed it initially on GP.

its his actual girl or some chick he's feeling (but I usually take it as his actual girl or at least some chick he's been involved with)...typical conflict b/w a man and his woman's chirping female friends who always seem to be more "in" with her than he is...like they're still a club and he's on the outside. Almost as if they're more intimate, leading to
He's going into a fake female voice like "oh, is this what you want? If I was one of your girlfriends maybe we'd be tighter? Maybe I could (x,y,z)"
The pitch-up and romantic/sexualized tone of it all just adds to the bite and sting of dude's point.

28 years later, I think the people that know the song and listened to the lyrics know what it's about by now And those that don't just place them in the room with the folks that think that Reasons and As We Lay are love songs.

every time i hear that shit in some commercial for an upcoming leukemia walk or as bumper music for some espn segment on an underdog HS basketball team, i wonder whether the producers are aware that it's about a gay man in his feelings the morning after a one-night stand.
