I thought it was really close between him and Earl. I picked Earl because sometimes less really is more. If Kendrick had just chosen the dopest tracks from his album and cut all the interludes, then I might give it to Kendrick.

I might have a slight bias towards Earl because I feel like him and I have a similar mentality about life. I respect the shit out of Kendrick though and his latest effort.

I like Earl as an artist.

But his "outlook" is the least likeable thing about him.

Joey Bada$$ grew up with actual problems. He doesn't know
his dad either. And his mom isn't a professor. Zero bitching
and whining. Just real kid shit.

but I dig Earl the most because he has an uncanny talent at describing feelings, especially depression.

On another note, I respect and agree with your opinion more than not on these boards. Any advice on how I can get past the so-so production and appreciate Lupe like I used to?

>but I dig Earl the most because he has an uncanny talent at

Aight, I tend to like less direct treatments of feelings in
songs

I feel like the best depression rapper ever is MF Doom, for
example, which is interesting because he almost never talks
emotively about his feelings; everything is a buried under
a mask (literally), which is how I deal with feelings in
general

This is why, as much as I like TPAB, it's not my cup of
tea. Too much yelling at the listener, telling me about
how hard you have it

Lupe does the same on T&Y, but he layers it, more my style

To each her/his own, tho

>On another note, I respect and agree with your opinion more
>than not on these boards. Any advice on how I can get past

If you heard 'Mural' and didn't immediately think it's
one of the better songs you've heard in a decade, I'm not
sure what to tell you.

Production is a taste thing...I liked the production on this
album

Das Racist was cool enough to catch a track from here and there but I never needed to hear a full album from them. So, that's kind've extended to Heems even though I guess he's become a real (as in not parody) rapper.

I've heard good things about the album... and not good things too.
I'll try to check it out this week sometime.

He's one of those artists I wish I liked, because I like his content, even when I don't agree with him (I damn sure don't agree with his random Twitter/interview opinions)....but the production never holds me, and his personality/delivery just never keeps me engaged.

I see how his opinions can rub people the wrong way but I really like that he speaks his mind on a lot of different issues.

I didn't vote though as his album is the only one I've listened to out of these options.

Which explains why you don't like his music.

It only works if you act like an adult, press 'PLAY',
and listen to music, devoid of who person X is in a
twitter beef with.

Of the albums in the poll, I prefer it to Earl's and Drake's. Lupe, Joey, and Kendrick's were still better tho.

The others can be liked, or even admired, but don't seem to be as enjoyable for me.

You might think someone up there is a better rapper.
But best album? To Pimp A Muthafuckin Butterfly.
As a body of work, ain't none of them albums seeing it.
You'd have to put it up there with "Fear Of A Black Planet", "Death Certificate" and
some other classic shit for the other choices to even have a chance.

lmao @ any of them joints being better ALBUMS that To Pimp A Butterfly.
This is a joke, fam.

started an incredible enjoyable run of albums. I wanted to list it because I don't want it missed in this group, as I would rank it higher than Drake and Curren$y's projects, though both still really good.

I haven't heard it yet *ducks* lol

but a lot of the reason why I loved T&Y is because Cadillactica set the bar, and then everything else was measured against that metric (to me.)

That's the main reason I can't not include it. I honestly don't know if I would like T&Y the same way if not for the verse/controversy on "Lost Generation", plus evaluating KRIT's expectation vs return on his project. It started a great run for me, and I've bought more albums since KRIT since I've bought in the previous 2 years. (Bought as opposed to downloaded).

The other albums aren't even on my radar anymore. Earl can rap his ass off but I have to be in a certain mood to take in the production.

TPAB is my favorite album in years regardless of genre - I have to go back to Portishead's Third (2008) for another album that hit me this hard (I'm probably in the minority opinion in regards to Third) but that doesn't mean this year hasn't had some other great rap releases, Lupe's album was great, pretty much a return to form for him and that Joey Bada$$ album was his best work yet in my opinion. That Earl album is also his best work to date - great year for rap so far. And also although that new Curren$y is not on the level of the albums I just mentioned IMO, it is another solid entry in the Pilot Talk series - good album.

I love the Kendrick album. I put it on and just let it play. Some songs are stronger than others but the overall production keeps it in pocket (except the second half of "u"). Lupe is pretty much the same except lyrically it's on another level. I can say that I like Adoration of the Magi more than any song on TPAB. Doesn't mean the album is better though. Great to have these kind of problems.

are the two records out of that bunch that I still play. That Joey record especially...the guy is a teenager rapping about grown man stuff with maturity and a conviction to overcome it. I couldn't compare albums by spoiled whiny rich kids with hyperactive endocrine systems or useless weird guy rhetoric to it. Not to mention as a body of work, it's damn near immaculate.
