Rhythm-al-ism
The Chronic

Those are my ten after a lot of deliberation but I had trouble leaving The Fix and Doggystyle off, after looking through this post. But I decided on The Chronic over Doggystyle because I find it to be more diverse in production (same reason I took Rhythm-al-ism over Safe & Sound...I like Safe & Sound better but Rhythm-al-ism is way more diverse). The Fix I just couldn't fit in but once I saw someone else list it I was like...shit. Cause I don't know that I could go the rest of my life without hearing Guess Who's Back.

Lil' B- I'm Gay
Hell Hath No Fury
Midnight Marauders
Brooklynati
Blaqkout
Illmatic

In no order.

Not all universal "classics" but probably my favorite albums to listen to at this moment. I excluded mixtapes otherwise I probably would've thought to include one of Lupe's F&F mixtapes, Cam's Public Enemy, Drought 3, and a few others. 10 is hard.

some lesser stuff with some more enjoyable things going on, or just for variety's sake?

yea, I can't just take my top 10 can I? Be too boring, or stuff I've heard too much. Hmmm.

I'll include where these are on my list though just for fun.

Madvillainy (3)
Kanye - MBDTF (6)
Digable Planets - Blowout Comb (8)
Edan - Beauty & The Beat (18)
Beat Konducta Vol. 5 - Dil Cosby Suite (23)

OutKast - Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (25)
Jay-Z - The Blueprint (34)
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury (53)
Curren$y - Pilot Talk (67)
Lil' Wayne - Da Drought 3 (101)

the one I REALLY wanted to keep but couldn't find room for is Three Six Mafia's Underground Vol. 1. I'd have also taken Kingpin Skinny Pimp's or Koopsta Knicca's album. I just couldn't find a spot for 'em...

Pete Rock and CL Smooth - The Main Ingredient
Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
Nas - Illmatic
Slick Rick - Great Adventures
The Roots - Things Fall Apart
Ice Cube - Death Certificate
Outkast - ATLiens
Little Brother - The Listening
Dogg Pound - Dogg Food
Big K.R.I.T. - 4EvaNaDay

That was way too hard. I think I initially had all 10 being east coast albums released between 1990-1995, as that's what I tend to favor. But then I decided to try to get some albums that featured different sounds, from different eras to account for different moods.

Definitely not my top 10 albums ever, but 10 albums that I love, where I tried to mix it up a bit in both sound and content.

But damn....no Redman, EPMD, Wu Tang, PE, De La, Scarface, LL, Kane, BDP....let me stop before I edit my list again.

Same issue with me. Are we wanting more variety or just going with what we can't live with out. I had three Wu albums at first but then took one off.

These are in no particular order, just the cds that I listen to on the regular that I can't go without.

Slum Village "Fantastic Vol.2"
Jay Dee "Welcome 2 Detroit"
Group Home "Livin' Proof"
Cella Dwellas "Realms 'N Reality"
Pharoahe Monch "Internal Affairs"
Quasimoto "The Unseen"
Common "Like Water For Chocolate"
Pete Rock "Soul Survivor"
Soul In The Hole Soundtrack
Dj Magic Mike "Bass Is The Name Of The Game"

It's so many I had to take off the list but that's my top ten "I gotta listen to at least once every few weeks" cds.

I've been a fan ever since I kept hearing people blast "Feel The Bass" in their cars and I just had to find out what it was, and have it for myself even though all I had was a cheap boom-box.

When his 2nd album dropped, I got it on cassette, and a year later special ordered it on vinyl, but it's more than just an instrumental scratch album cause it has rap songs on it too, and not all the songs are fast the majority of them are mid-tempo joints, so he covers all bases and nothing really compares to that album back then or now.

I still get people hunting that album down cause they miss it so.

It's got hard to not-so-hard track on it, but it's got almost an all-star selection on it, the funny thing is I've been listening to the album since it came out but still haven't seen the movie for it.

It's surprising to me how little it gets mentioned. I don't even think there's another hip-hop soundtrack close to it.

Look at the fucking line up

Dead Prez - second song I ever heard by them...first being Happiness on a Loud sampler.
Wu
Sauce Money over a Primo banger
MOP
Big Pun's first full joint after killing Off The Books
Xzibit with one of his illess joints ever
Cella Dwellaz...I stay souped up like Won-Ton
Mobb Deep with one of my favorite Havoc beats of all time
Common...maybe my favorite song by him period
Brand Nubian with a classic joint off their shelved album
Smif-N-Wessun will the ill back and forth joint
Wu All-Stars...Shyheim kicks the illess basketball verse ever here
Darc Mind...maybe the only slacker but Loud was pushing a new act
Organized Konfusion
OC comes through the kill it at the end with maybe the best song on the album.

This shit is damn near flawless!

He's an absolute beast. I have a playlist from all his albums from 2003 to present that's over 300 tracks. Crazy that he remains so unknown. I think he's the best sangin' rapper of all time.

Common - Resurrection
OutKast - ATLiens
OutKast - Aquemini
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Kanye West - Late Registration
CunninLynguists - A Piece Of Strange
Jay Dee - Donuts
Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass
Roc Marciano - Reloaded
Drake - Nothing Was The Same

Wanted to keep the majority of the selections fairly recent (post 2000's) because as much nostalgic value a lot of 80's and 90's rap albums have for me, I'm more likely to revisit something that I haven't played to death yet. Only regret is not being able to fit Enta Da Stage and De La Soul Is Dead.

In order of release...

1 Illmatic
2 Liquid Swords
3 ATLiens
4 Moment of Truth
5 Soul Survivor
6 The Fix
7 Donuts
8 Never Better
9 Skelethon
10 Tetsuo & Youth

I tried to span my years of listening. A few that were the hardest to leave out;

The Main Ingredient - I elected to go with Soul Survivor for the various MCs.
The Infamous & Dah Shinin' - both are the epitome of mid-90s NYC hip-hop but so is Liquid Swords and I needed a Wu album in the mix.
Stakes Is High - hard to not have De La.
Aquemini - couldn't have two Kast albums and ATLiens always edges it out.
TFA, BOBS, LWFC, & TOT - wish I could take the best of this era.
Trophies - this album is tied to my wedding and honeymoon so it represents a great time in my life.

Last note...no west coast albums but I just don't reach to play any of them very often for whatever reason. Sorry R-Tistic! At least Aesop was living in SF while writing and recording Skelethon so maybe that counts?

I use to listen to these three album religiously for mad years, not as much these days but I still go back to it like once a year but those three are like staples in changing how hip-hop albums sounded.

It's not fair man. How can I choose between so many classic albums?

I did my best, but I'd probably need to spend a year to really do this. There's so many emcees that aren't in this list but it's just albums so I have to leave them off. This list is like 55% nostalgia. Some of these albums haven't been tested recently though. I'm not sure I'm going to feel the same way now. I can't believe I have to leave off ATLiens, De La Soul Is Dead, Nokturnal. Anyway...

Tribe Low End Theory
Mos Def Black on Both Sides
X-Clan Xodus
Enter the Wu-Tang 36 Chambers
The Pharcyde Labcabincalifornia
Raekwon Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...
De La Soul Bahloon Mindstate
Souls 93 'Til Infinity
Xzibit Foundation
Goodie Mob Soul Food

Thanks for mentioning this. This is a fantastic album that was criminally slept on. It probably won't make a top 10 for me but I can't be mad at someone for putting it on their list.

Deliverance DEFINITELY made the list. Fantastic rap album that kinda got lost in that early G-Unit time period and discounted because a white, country rapper made it (even though Bubba did have a couple decent hits).

I get it for the most part, but for emcees that are almost universally considered at the top of their profession, it is interesting that they are for the most part missing from these lists.

For me personally, I love Rakim and KRS. Not big on BDK though I respect his legacy. I just had to put the albums I grew up with in the mix. I included my two favorite albums from the 80s and unfortunately they didn't make the cut. My third would be Slick Rick's The Great Adventures...

which is why you won't see them.

obviously in the rap pantheon those guys aren't going anywhere...and their best songs are still fucking great...but their whole albums? i don't think they hold up to most of the albums that people have listed in this thread.

And I came to a similar conclusion as well. BDP/KRS and Kane were primarily singles artists for me (Criminal Minded being one of the biggest exceptions).

But I kept coming back to Paid In Full. I think everyone can admit it's a classic album. It's definitely not perfect, but it is a masterpiece. I think those 2 songs (and everyone knows what two songs I'm talking about) are the weak link in an album full of hits. A case could be made for Follow the Leader as well, but it didn't spawn the singles and airplay that Paid in Full did.

early to late 80's hip hop is the innovations in sampling/production (along with new equipment that was available).

it allowed for a wider diversity of beats vs. a lot of early drum machines (SP12, TR 808, TR 909, LINN, DMX) so that on one particular album from, say...1993, the likelihood that your ear is gonna wear out is lower because you're not hearing 3 tracks in a row that are built solely off the 808 and 909 or whatever. i think this becomes an ever bigger problem when you're revisiting an album from 1987 in 2015 vs. judging that album in 1987 when it came out.

I hate the word "dated" because everything is dated, but the advancement, production wise, when you compare some of the 90s classics listed hear compared to the albums people usually cite to by the legends (KRS, Rakim, BDK) is kind of undeniable IMO. This is probably why my favorite album by KRS is actually The Return of the Boom Bap, with By All Means Necessary being a close second.

As stated, this is hard as hell. I tried to grab a mixture of my favorite classics as well as recent, as I see them, masterpieces. Things that speak to me on various levels.

ATCQ - The Low End Theory
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
Drake - Take Care
Goodie Mob - Soul Food
JAY Z - American Gangster
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Mobb Deep - The Infamous
Nas - It Was Written
Outkast - ATLiens
Rick Ross - Teflon Don

I play that album at least three or four times a month. Dark Man X came through with this one. The beats were greasy. Pun intended. He was spittin!
