"Live From the Writer's Bench: Is Kendrick's TPAB A Top 5 Classic Already..."

We took last week off to give everybody on the Bench a chance to let Kendrick Lamar's "How To Pimp A Butterfly" marinate and not jump to any crazy conclusions so this week we're back to chop it up about what were our initial reactions to hearing TPAB and do we feel differently almost 2 weeks later, when and how we like listening to new music, why this is one of those albums you either love or hate, why do folk just gotta say something is a classic 4 minutes after it drops, can any album that just dropped just 72 hours ago knock Stevie's Songs In the Key of Life or Nas' Illmatic out the box to make it into your top 5 albums of all times and most importantly is HTPB a 5 mic classic? We also got okayplayers own "Nick Has A Problem" chopping it up with us this week.

My question for ya'll is how much time has to pass in your own opinion for an album to be considered a classic and are there certain albums that after a couple of listens just have "it" for you to know. Sorta like how the Source knew Low End and Illmatic were both 5 mic classics.

I think some time has to pass before I know if something is a classic. I've had albums resonate with me after the first x number of listens but when I go back to them months later, they don't give me the feeling they once did.

What makes a classic imo, is when I can leave an album, come back to it months later and it will still hit me the way it did when I was initially introduced to the music.

I think thats the difference between an album having 'something' and having 'it.' I can name what the something is. 'It' is unable to be put into words. It makes you feel a certain way.

Everything he references as classic is NY music. Illmatic. The Infamous. 36 Chambers. Referencing The Beatnuts. Bobby Shmurda.

If it ain't NY he don't like it.

Yup...that's Beezo's bag and that's why I figured he wouldn't dig the album. If you don't dig Outkast, then you're not gonna dig Kendrick like THAT IMO. I know everyone says he's cut from Tupac but he's also very much cut from the Dre 3000 cloth too. As soon as I heard the album I was like Beezo ain't gonna rock with this.

and argue that I hear OutKast more than any other artist in him....def more than Pac. Yes, it is obvious that the west has influenced him as well, especially with the funky stuff, but I think sonically various parts of his past album channel Kast', this one even more so. I'm not saying he sounds exactly like Kast', but the influence to me is pretty apparent. He even sounds like 3K rapping at times. Shit, they must be proud hearing the quirky but at the same time catchiness in songs like "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe" or the soul in stuff like "You Ain't Gotta Lie"...it's just so Kast-ish to me.

Yeah, I'd LOVE to hear what he says about that. I'm actually shocked people haven't said he bit 3000's style. It's like certain artist get a pass and it's an "influence" and not biting. As soon as I head "Don't Kill My Vibe" I was like "now what does 3000 think of this?" And then I found this video of Kendrick playing it for 3000...

Lol...I feel you. I always said he's more Dre 3000 then anybody. I think whoever is king of the west coast at the time is the new Pac. Kinda like any athletic 2 guard or small forward was the next Michael Jordan.

the standout was hearing everyone's reward for 'leaning into' the album and Beezo's perspective on the beats.

TPAB is a 'jazz' album in a sense that it is difficult to understand the references and the nuances, but once that door is unlocked there is a mine of jewels to unpack and sort through.

lots of layers to the album and it was good to hear everyone's perspective and how the panel likes to listen to new music.

If you all have done this, could you all pick a record and then pick it apart for the length of the show? You all could listen to Illmatic or The Chronic or Run The Jewels and pick apart the production or lyrics from song to song. Everyone has a deep understanding of music and hearing the breakdown would be something I would listen to.

So, basically breaking down track by track if we liked or not and why? Yeah, we can mos def do an ep like that. Any album you thinking for the 1st go 'round besides Illmatic? It seems like somehow, someway we talk about that album on every ep. Good looking for the idea too fam!

i hear Outkast on him, i hear Snoop's soulful country vibe on him

i think the 2pac reference is based off his going off rants he tends to do where that is very pacesque.

you could also make a Scarface claim as well.

he is a old school soul with his.

in another era perhaps Somewhere between Rakim and Willie D might have been his template.

I do think there are certain albums where you just KNOW that you'll be listening to this well into the future and I definitely think To Pimp A Butterfly is one of those album.
