"classics: ones you knew right away, slept on, still deny"

let's keep this tpab buzz still going...

among the hip-hop albums considered all-time benchmarks, which ones did you...

1. know right away were all-time classics ("I always knew, fuck y'all!")

2. slept on at first, but now acknowledge their status ("i'll take my L")

3. still deny to this day ("fuck that album forever and ever")

yeah, those albums are nowhere near "fuck that album!"

it's more like "I still don't get the hype".

Almost all West Coast classics, Outkast's albums, Blueprint, Ready to die

>2. slept on at first, but now acknowledge their status ("i'll
>take my L")

I don't know how it counts, but it's a lot of these I didn't hear til years and years later. I heard Reasonable doubt in 01...Straight outta Compton in 05...Adventures of Slick Rick in 06...The Minstrel Show in 07, and The Listening in like 2010...Fantastic Vol. 2 in 2010....Illmatic maybe 05...Low End Theory 08-09....Death Certificate in 07....The Purple Tape not til 2009. I caught up on a lot of them.

>3. still deny to this day ("fuck that album forever and
>ever")

I'll never say that 3 Feet High and Rising isn't classic, but I just don't enjoy it a single bit. And I love all Tribe albums...this one here just feels like I had to be there to understand it. And since I wasn't, I don't get it at all.

It's a cool album, but "Below the Heavens" was always overrated to me.

For me, it just keeps jumping from raw to smooth and back and forth.

I think it's a very good album without question, but it just has a lot of weaker parts. On top of that, the best songs from that era are non-album tracks (Who Shot Ya & OMC/Stay With Me)

I do like the album and I liked it back then. It was a popular album and a whole lot of fun but I just don't think it's as great as folks seem to today. I don't remember anyone (except Puffy) calling it a classic while it was out. Heads seem to love it more now than they did when it was hot. I understand that a little, especially after Biggie's death. I just don't think it belongs among the all-time great albums.

I also like Sleepy's point that 2 of his best songs weren't on the album.

I really like the album, just find it to not be on par with the rest of the albums I consider classic.

No true "grievances" per se....just don't find it as mind blowing as the top notch albums.

it's just not worthy of being a benchmark album to me. it gets it's accolades by default--cuz of biggie's death, how influential it was, and because it was one of the few east coast albums that REALLY went pop at the time. none of these things were positives for me. I wish big had lived, I wish nas would've made illmatic part 2 rather than IWW, and I wish the album would've flopped causing big to make some underground backpacker shit that would've then went platinum.

Labcabincalifornia - It's a good album, but not a classic
Fantastic, Vol 2. - Just don't get the hype
Wu-Tang Forever - Really liked it at first, but doesn't live up to the hype. To be fair, none of those late 90's double albums do.
