"Riot" is MIGHT be my favorite too, but I actually think "Life" is their best album as far as consistency, strength of songs, and complete expression. After he came back with "DTTM" from being told that "AWNT" was a too left, he went back to some experimentation WHILE keeping the pop sensibility. That was the last time we'd hear a fun and fresh Sylvester experimenting (and being silly) like that all simultaneously (he did it first on AWNT, but the songs weren't there, imo). Personally, I view "Life" as a peak of sorts. Stand! is also amazing, and I could see the argument for it being their best (as with any of their first 5). He hit the nail on the head with giving people the funk and sound that they wanted there... while still being the extremely original cat that he was.
