i wouldn't have as much issue with Rosenberg if he didn't try to present himself as so well versed & immersed within the culture/art.

rap knowledge. In his mind, hip-hop started in like 1993. I guess having over 20 years of in-depth hip-hop knowledge would sound cool to an outsider, but to us, it's just not enough.

the consistent ignorance about pretty well-known, or at least accessible info on their interviewees is irritating. They really scraped the surface on Easy Mo's catalogue. And didn't delve deeper at his insistence on exploring the other things like the Latifah stuff, the Wu-Tang cuts, etc.

And the misstated 'facts' are bad too. Tupac and BIG were not on "The Points" together. And the Ron G joint was not an original collab, that was from seperate sessions and put together posthumously. BIG and 'Pac collabs that I'm aware of: "Runnin'", "Lets Get It On", "House Of Pain" (not counting "MSG Freestyle" w/ Kane). If there are more, add on.

I know Rosenberg personally, he's a funny, dedicated guy who loves the opportunities afforded him to participate in the culture. But he's hacking it when it comes to a lot of the folk they interview.

Nonetheless, i'm glad they do Juan Epstein.

i mean, i don't want to hear a know-it-all interview the guests and just answer the guests questions for them and tell the guests stories.

i like that they are getting schooled at points - too many know-it-alls already. gives their podcast a realistic feel to me.

We have wikipedia now so nobody really cares about know it alls when it comes to facts.

Discographies are right at our fingertips. Its unprofessional and simply lazy to not even bother looking it up. Nothing wrong with a cheat sheet. Easy Mo Bee has only entirely produced two or three albums in his whole career. Its kind of a big deal that Easy Mo Bee worked with arguably the greatest jazz musician in the world. If they researched him a little (just a 20 minute google session), they would have seen that.

There's still alot of anecdotes and stories he could have schooled them on that are not common knowledge.

Despite his love of hip-hop, I don't expect Rosenberg to be a walking trivia robot. Just have a little cheat sheet with you to keep things moving.

i appreciate the guest schooling the hosts from time to time.

no excuses, just something i enjoy.

Rosenberg comes at the guests from his perspective/knowledge about the guests. That's fine. I don't think he should have to have memorized their discography, nor would I expect him to.

You say he should have notes to keep it moving - do you think the interviews don't move? I think quite the opposite - usually they move TOO fast which is why they are like "we didn't even talk about yadda yadda yadda - we gotta get you back on" at the end of every episode.

if you read my comment, you'll see that i also enjoy schooling.
just not on basic things like discography.
it's not a big deal to you. that's cool.
i just wanted to assert, that it is downright lazy and not an intentional character of the show.

>Rosenberg comes at the guests from his perspective/knowledge

i was referring specifically to discography.

the show has no structure. even in it's non-structure.
i mostly listen for the guests and the accidental gems the guests might drop.
and ciph is a bit funny sometimes.
like the dude above said, they're hacking it a bit too much.
it would only take a little effort to make it ALOT better.

I always viewed Juan Ep was more on the vibe of just some people bullshitting about a bunch of things, rather than in depth history lesson.

The first Juan Eps - for those who have been listening from day 1 - Ciph and Rosenberg just bullshitted about anything and everything (hip-hop, fast food, chimichangas)...

I mean, it's not a YCOHO thing to me.

They do the same podcast, just differently. However, I USUALLY find that Rosenberg and Ciph get more out of their guests than Combat because they ask more pointed questions (and more of them) and they don't interrupt the guests in the middle of their stories and send them down some other path, which Combat does a lot.

additionally, BECAUSE Rose and Ciph don't know everything, their lack of knowledge allows the guest to educate which also adds more insight and history to the guest's stories.

Also, Rose and Ciph are much funnier IMO.

Anyways, I enjoy both podcasts pretty much equally.

Mo Bee is one of my favorite producers. I was at least happy that Ciph knew about Rappin Is Fundamental. I don't know why Combat Jack didn't have Mo Bee on. Him being around that Bad Boy time might have made for a better interview. But that's just me.

Either way I'm happy it happened and Everything Remains Raw is a top 10 Busta song.

They really thought they were gonna have him discussing an uncleared sample on the air and on record? Still amazing that a 1 note sample (not even a full second long) is shrouded in such mystery. That's hip-hop to me.
