very referential to older styles of black music.

The Colbert track isn't on here.

It's out though, officially. You can buy it.

i suspect it will be very popular on here.
feel a lot of kast on here. feel a lot of the roots before they quit trying on here. lot of it sounds like some flylo stuff but surprisingly he has no credits on it from what i've seen so far.

not feeling it outside of TBTB though. not after GKMC.

sounds way too soft & *out there* for me

just a weird ass gremlin cartoon voiced rapper over a bunch of weird ass "picking flowers in the garden" ass beats (except for sale interlude, hood politics, these walls, & blacker the berry)

everyone making Roots comparisons in here..maybe "ATYSYC Roots..definitely not the Roots of past albums...

he was spittin on "these walls" & "blacker the berry"

the rest ..straight ZzzZZZzzz

the good songs are really good..and the others are really boring/weird

edit, the beat for "you aint gotta lie" is dope too. so thats another one..this album might grow on me a little lol.

there are some records that i can't wait to begin unpacking after a single listen
this one has a ton to unpack, but its not enticing me to do so
I don't know if thats because of how meandering it is sonically
or if its not as rap-heavy as i wanted it to be
but I feel like the process of getting to know this record is going to feel like more of a task than a pleasure.

As is the decision to end the album with Kendrick pretending to "interview" Tupac...

P-Funk influence (that beat on Wesley's Theory is straight out of late 70s Parliament) meets spoken word.

I like it, upon first listen. Get ready to read a bunch of reviews that talk about how it's a "challenging work" that will "polarize casual fans" of K. Dot.

Eh, whatever, I'm grown, I'm digging it and will have to burrow further into it...

It's too dense and esoteric to have an instant verdict on. I feel like I'll need to give this one multiple listens before it clicks (or doesn't click).

After a first listen, I will say that it is a very bold album to release in the wake of a platinum pop-rap debut. Whereas GKMC had a Drake feature and catchy hooks in Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe and Swimming Pools, To Pimp A Butterfly has very little pop or radio appeal. Now, I see why he released 'i'...it's the only thing that leaned towards accessible on this.

Gimme another week or so and I'll have an official opinion...

The best rappers these days seem afraid to just put out an album where they just rap for 12 songs. I never hear wakka flocka cluttering his album with live instrumentation and experimental breaks/a funk homage.

That being said, he won me over through the course of this album. Yet another album that is not what I wanted, but a great listen nonetheless.

I hope it accomplishes whatever he wanted it to professionally.

Tribe and Outkast and Kanye also went far left on their second albums, but they still delivered SONGS.

It's early, but I'm not hearing many songs here. A lot of jazzy drifting and rapping. But there's still a neatness that's needed

it's such a breath of fresh air from the redundant trap garbage and cloud rap of today it's kind of an amazing listen so far.

So for that I fucks wit it.

I like it a lot, but I gotta listen to it again. It's a lot to take in on first listen.

It sounds like a Flying Lotus album.

Best way to describe it is a free-jazz spoken word album. "i" fits in smoothly with the rest of the album.

Only true "hip-hop" song is "The Blacker the Berry".

I can't believe a major label put this out.

It's been said already but FlyLo's hands are all over this album even though he only produced the first track. It's basically a continuation of You're Dead! production-wise. I don't see this being as successful as the last album commercially but I'm diggin' the hell out of it.

Even Kanye gave you "Golddigger" on Late Registration.

But in this case, there's nothing mainstream to buy. He was poised to be an A-list festival headliner, but people aren't going to like this.

A lot of people will defend it, but it's a shame.

Ultimately you're as good as your songs.

Yeah it may have been released by mistake, but people were paying for it.

A lot of people have it now, so they delay it another week for everyone else just means it'll really be bootlegged like crazy.

Should have just left it out there.

Now I'm pissed others got to purchase and listen to this and now I have to wait to hear it even though I was willing to spend money on it right now.

Dunno what they're thinking

I donate 50 dollars to a charity in their name

Because this album is exactly what you get when you
have a bunch of dumb hipsters telling you how cool
you are

You get senselessly experimental, all in the name of
"art"

Lyrically I'm underwhelmed, which is the worst part

This is ass grease

He wanted to deliver some "authenticity" with some
"retro" and some "funk" and "art"

D'Angelo and Bruno Mars' success probably didn't help the
direction of this record

It's the worst kind of retro-mix

Just a confused, frustrated mess

KL will sell about 10X as many as Lupe, so good for him.

But the album is dogshit.

Lupe is making music for a genre that doesn't exist
anymore, though, which is why his days as household
name are done (he will eat for decades off of what he
does, though, just not like KL)

This is 2015: We like to hear J.Cole be 30 years old and
make songs about getting boners at the school dance in 10th
grade

So this album is fine

Yeah Lupe got the best rap album of 2015 hands down but I don't agree with OE on this Kendrick album. He definitely didn't make this for hipsters. Shit, he might lose some of those hipsters with this album. Nigga pulled a DP Blowout Comb Pro-Black type of album.

This isn't just stuff that's not gonna find easy radio play in 2015, but in the 70's it would be everywhere..he's a much more improved songwriter and the songs are ultimately stronger.

The thing is that it's not in a pop music verse chorus verse format, add to the fact it's alot of live sounding instrumentation which is in stark contrast to the Mile Will Made it world we live in now... This album will do numbers at least initially because of the sneak attack, but it's gonna be interesting to see how it plays out.

Considering he stole a bunch of Flying Lotus in Captain Murphy mode beats, i wouldn't be surprised if we don't have a more straightforward rappity rap release coming up.

That said, it's great. There should be equal slobnobbing here for Lamar as there was for D'Angelo. Didn't know he would go full Soulaquarians, lol

It's fine to not like the album, and talk about how/why you don't like it. But this shit right here is unnecessary as fuck and how you got 2 Lupe threads locked. I thought/hoped you had turned a corner and gotten (back) to actually talking about music.

All the songs have logical hooks and verses, etc. Are they 3 and a half minute pop songs? Nope. But the Roots, Badu, Common, etc weren't doing that either. OutKast were fantastic POP song writers in addition to being great MC's, "Hey Ya" wasn't exactly an anomaly for them.

It's just interesting how he made an album aimed straight at what this websites traditional tastes are and everyones like, 'Where's the radio single?' lol. You had J.Cole, then Drake, and now Lamar dropping their darker then most/non pop friendly records in the past 3 months and it seems we have a barrel of mad only for Lamar.

I can still hear how well made it is - but that doesn't automatically translate to being an album that I love (or even like nec.)
