I actually had to do a search to even figure out who Tibbets is, but the search was "Tibbets Hiroshima" because I figured that was the most controversial flight in US history.

I love Lupe, I play this album almost daily since I purchased it and "Madonna" is one of my top tracks on the album.

The MAIN reason I love this song is because of how it captures beautifully/sonically/metaphorically this comparison of Black boys/men being killed in the streets by cops/rogues vs the crucifixion of Jesus Christ (Black man).

"White (t) on their shoulders" => carrying the cross = masterful.

For this song to have come out basically around the same time of #icantbreathe is what makes this song the score to the craziness we've seen escalate recently.

Everytime I hear "I be just tryna make it" I visualize the faces of the men and women who have been struck down in these national executions. Everytime I hear "they be just tryna break us" I see Zimmerman, Wilson, the Staten Island cop, etc. And when I hear "momma said 'my son never been in no trouble'" I think of Mary holding Jesus with a quick cut to Jordan Davis' mother after her son's killer was put in jail.

This video aint that. I relate to the story. My father battled with drug addiction. And its a nice little dramatically shot narrative, but it doesn't fit the song at all. If this is a play to get White folks to make this song/album digestible then all power to him, cause Lupe has earned any prosperity he gets. But to me it is such a missed opportunity. He literally could have saved this treatment for "Blur My Hands", had a poppy crossover digestible hit for White masses, and had more impact. But "Madonna"? Nah. Didn't feel it and I was disappointed in this.

All due respect to the man tho.

In a time where art and the spaces to create it are under more attack than I've ever seen them, instead of bowing down to take hold of whatever money's left, artists like Lupe are like "nah" and doing themselves.

The beat is whatever…not offensive at all, but it sounds like something Eminem would've used for a radio joint 10 years ago. In any case, these rhymes take me back to the Def Jux years. Early-college days and whatnot. Pretty damn good, but I'm not seeking-out this kind of rap anymore.

My favorite Lupe joint is still "Paris, Tokyo." I don't consider myself a fan, but I know the man in definitely talented.

Plus, we gotta remember that this is a throwaway song

Jux was true Avant Garde shit. Neurotic, artful spazzy music, much
of it very beautiful

This is technical and clear....the theme is direct, the topic very clear

Its "dark" in the Def Jux sense, but that's about it

Neither here nor there, though

Lupe is performing a different brand of music right now.

I don't know what to call it.

But it's a real quantum leap forward.

(in Atomic Misphilosophy)

Referring to the bomb that hit Hiroshima
("little boy" was its actual nickname)

He actually said that in a rap, and it fit,
and wasn't forced, and flowed

What is wrong with this dude?

He is performing a different kind of music

This is an incredible lyrical exercise. And T&Y goes there better than any album in a long time. But I wonder if this is something that can be sustained?

My only qualm with Lupe's newest is the musical direction. The aesthetic musically is to be as accessible as possible. I understand it fits with the current climate of hip-hop, but it just doesn't fit for what he's trying to say artistically, in my opinion. At times, Lupe feels very disjointed from the music he's working with. There just doesn't seem to be an organic connection with the art he's creating.

I wish he'd taken more chances on that front, and then we'd really have the genre-defining, revolutionary act Lupe is capable of becoming.

Not to say that he isn't doing something interesting and new. But to me the overall package of Shabazz Palaces, as one example, is pushing the envelope in more interesting and more important ways (despite Lupe's phenomenal lyrical flash this year).

Lupe might have actually outgrown hip-hop. The music
today is mostly black death music. Kendrick has found a way
to not upset white fans in a way that Lupe never has.
As have J.Cole and Drake (Drake's ticket has been through
women, and good for him) But other than that, the easiest ticket
to getting (white)listeners is to celebrate black destruction
or fetishize black coolness.

Lupe does neither.

I don't think this artform is equipped to deal with someone
like him right now.

The fanbase isn't really in the mood for someone who
talks about Atomic bombs in this artful kind of way. Again,
the music now either (a) celebrates destructive black behavior
or (b) fetishizes the coolness of black culture

BLACK kids who read books and want to rhyme about them are
better off picking up a guitar, because the white fan base that
has made hip-hop rich don't want to hear Neil De Grasse Tyson
rapping. They want to her Bobby Schmurda.

Note how Mackelmore, a white kid (who I like, btw), was able to
be political and have a hit record. Smart black kids aren't
afforded that same freedom.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Lupe obviously has years
worth of rhymes this good written. I think the general sentiment
is that given the space to choose his own producers, he'll
put out quality music like this. No guarantee, but signs point
towards that being true.

This paragraph didn't make any sense.

Lots of abstract ideas piled onto nebulous concepts.

>I wish he'd taken more chances on that front, and then we'd
>really have the genre-defining, revolutionary act Lupe is

I and many others say that T & Y is genre defining.

I disagree. Shabazz Palaces simply sounds eclectic and cool
because of the music. There's no comparison.
