"Older heads, any of these current producers cracking your top 25 list?"

I was looking at my list and only a few cats who popped off post 2000 made the cut. Any current producers have the potential to make your top 25?

DJ Dahi belongs on a list somewhere.

So much of my "all time" lists are too caught up in nostalgia, and rightfully so, but it doesn't leave space for contemporary greatness within its own context.

I made this similar comparison to Lupe, saying my top 3 (KRS, Nas, Ghostface) he basically was like all three in one. But my hesitation in even considering him that high is because I see him as something contemporary, and he's approached with a "oh he'll never be on the level of" stiffarm, but that aint right. Dude belongs in my top 5.

Dahi, if I slant my head a little, and peep "Money Trees", "Cadillactica", and his work on Tetsuo, he's gonna deserve some kinda mention.

9th is already there, for me. Gotta rep for the city.

the neptunes and timbaland have jams.
lots of hot beats.

are they producers the way leon sylvers and thom bell are, though.
maybe not in the same way.

but i feel that pharell had to work to get
that vocal performance out of usher on "u don't have to call."
he'd never sang like that before.

and the things timbo got out JT on "love never felt so good"
are pretty remarkable.

but still, is that production the way we used to use that word?

i dunno.

Some would argue it is ...now of days

but before Puffy came on the scene....in hip hop music the beatmaker was the producer.

obtaining the credit for the production. That's all. We don't know who brought what to the table. We hear a lot about Marley Marl being more of an engineer than producer, but he was "producer" in the credits. Then there are guys like DJ Doc who were only given mixing credits, but were sometimes bringing creative ideas to the table and putting the beats together.

He was being brought records to use at times, and he was putting them together. There's no dispute to be had there. He was the guy mixing the music, chopping the records and designing the records. There's no way the man that invented chopping was just engineering sessions.

There is something to be said about his reach. It all depends on what you're measuring "best" by, but his sound has become ubiquitous on hip-hop and pop radio in the past year-plus which means it's at the very least effective

i mean, Madlib is working with the Liks since wayback in 94... Alc was a "go to" producer of the late 90s indie hip hop scene along with Spinna & Hi Tek...

or categories.

You could list Luke or whomever produced those 2 Live Crew albums as a top 10/25/50 producer, but how can you compare the work he did with someone who is known as a 'technician' like Dilla or Premier? Especially if you (or whomever is making up the list) doesn't use record sales or cultural impact as a reason for being on a list?

It's not doing the NXT producers any favors to compare them to the Old-school / Golden age guys, because they newer producers had different equipment and were always being compared to producers that obviously had an advantage of growing up in the culture and knowing all of the nuances of the music.

It also isn't fair to compare the Old-School guys to the Millenials because the technology now is different and the advantages of being able to learn from guys in a studio and go through some form of artist development that the old crews had isn't around today. Also it wasn't as encouraged to blend different styles of music outside of R&B and hip-hop whereas the Millenials have a palatte of options that wouldn't have been available back in the 80's or 90's.

The only dude who's really jumped out at me as an all time great lately is.....

Moka Only.

No one ever talks about this guy, ever. I realize he's been around since the early 90's but his shit was trash until like 2003 or so but his stuff since then is astonishing. I discovered him 3 years ago and copped like 30 albums of his all with fantastic moments on them.

I cant really think of no current dudes thats like "ohh alright he is the next one.."

I like Boi-1da, 40, Hit-Boy, Jahlil Beats..but none of those dudes would make a top 25. The last producer I really looked out for is 9th..and that was 10-11 years ago now..

Ohh I forgot about JUSTICE League...those early Rick Ross records when they brought in that cinematic sound...not in my top 25 tho..

I got respect for Shawty Redd because of what his sound spawned when he broke out with Jeezy. I mean you literally can divide the sound of rap into before Thug Motivation 101 and after it...but he still wouldn't crack my top 25 tho...

DJ Khalil fell off crazily once he went bombastic, sweeping cloud snare production. His beat on Fashawn is trash.

yes it is but even the greats have many stinkers in their catalogue.

Khalil's work from 2004 to 2014 is damn near immaculate

He actually fell off like 4-5 years ago, fam. And that's only after being in the discussion for like a year or 2. Khalil ain't shit.

Listen to Moke Diddy if you wanna hear true talent unencumbered by trends.

Black Milk is close. And I don't consider Alchemist and Madlib as strictly producers of the '00s.
