"Making a case for Drake helping usher in the new Boom Bap.."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2bBZvSPpOo

Hard Crisp Drums.. 85-92 bpm.. 1 bar sample loops... basslines sans 808s

It seems like Boi-1da and Vinyls definitely innovated on something much closer to early-mid 90s east coast rap than has been done previously..

What say you...

early 90's Ice Cube.

I'm not a fan of his at all, but I do like that he's had some boom bap
representation on all his albums.

Those triple-time hi-hats and cymbal rolls disqualify it.

Maybe Boom-trap???

New sub-genres appear.

Having the high hats and fills be twice as fast (or more) as the beat's tempo is NOT boom-bap. Not an evolution of it.

It's that southern / trap influence.

Also I associate boom-bap with sampled drums or drum machine sounds that sound like sampled drums -- and not electronic drum sounds.

Boom-bap is faster the examples you posted from Drake. Drake is usually slower - except for fills and hi-hats - but SFTB is faster - so maybe that's why you're thinking it's boom-bap-ish.

I think Joey Bada$$ is what boom-bap is today.

We can agree on this: its still music.

Sounds don't evolve? How can you say that..

The subgenre thing is always x+y=z which is still an evolution of the 2 anyway

Now it may not be "boom bap" but it certainly references it..

and 82-105 is exactly the Boom Bap tempo which all this shit falls in...

this has never happened. its just different note values 1/16, 1/32. its always the same tempo

>It's that southern / trap influence.

man prince paul had those hats on Stetsasonics first album in 1986

>Also I associate boom-bap with sampled drums or drum machine

you do realize the earliest boom bap records basically all used drum machines right?

>Boom-bap is faster the examples you posted from Drake. Drake

nah...those joints are hip hop tempo and if the hats were playing at a different tempo than the rest of the beat you wouldn't want to listen

#1 - can we please stop using the term "boombap"?
nobody called sample-based rap production that in the 90's.
the term is came from mimicking soul-style breakbeats.
hence, no breakbeat = no boom bap.

#2 - that "sound" is mike zombie. not boi-1da or vinylz

he did a mixtape in 2013 with a bunch of tracks like "started from the bottom". i posted about it here:

http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=2879914

#3 - i've argued for literally years that the east coast needed to rock tempos 80-110 bpm if they ever wanted to make music that sounded like it was from the east coast.

True Zombie did it first...

Of course we should stop using the term.. BUT if we are going to discuss the elements sonically they draw a direct line to that era

again, you can't do east coast sounding rap production at 59 bpm.

the drum programming on "gentry" off that mike zombie was sharp:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apCMKbU0viI&t=06m44s

"0-100" was a laughable knock-off of dude's sound.

zombie's stuff is definitely more "east coast" almost a mix of the philly production sound (jahlil beatsish)

0-100 is more boom bap-esque.. it doesnt contain the extra snare on the 3 which is what a lot of the jahlil is built off of

https://soundcloud.com/mikezombie/same-enemies

this dropped about a month ago. pretty hard.

it's amazing that "started from the bottom" was one of the top 5 tracks of 2013 and this dude didn't start getting placements.

meanwhile, drake doing "started..." knockoffs like "10 bands" that aren't as hard because the drum programming isn't as good as mike zombie.

seem like drake on that kanye shit.
he "sign" you, steal your sound and you never drop. lol.

You made me go a look up his discography.. and yea.. He really aint pop like he should've..

but "Started.." was early in this style.. it coalesced with "0-100". There were not that many records you could mix with it when it first dropped... now you have joints like Lifestyle, Hot N*gga, Try Me, My N*gga, Fight Night and other Drake songs that allow for the sound to grow since it can play well with others

That Zombie shit is dope.

I agree that 0-100 was some new age boom bap shit. Not a Drake fan by any means but this one definitely caught my ears beatwise.
