By then, he'd already locked into that stop-and-go, cliche boom-bam polished sound that (sadly) became his trademark in the 00's. Ownerz just lacked the variation and diversity of his previous work (and a lot of his work since, too, to be fair).

It may be my #1 but I'd have to give that some serious thought. Primo's got too many gems.

Anyway I definitely love the diversity of his sounds on MoT. So...yea I couldn't argue too hard against this, even if I ultimately were to decide that it wasn't my personal #1 Primo-produced joint.

Above the Clouds alone may put it in that top spot. Love that beat to death.

Just song after song, verse after verse, there isn't a moment on the album that would really benefit from not being there. I know a lot of people don't like The Mall, but the transition between Make Em Pay and Betrayal would be a bit off. There isn't really a downer section of the record so The Mall provides a nice bit of positive energy before Uncle Brad joins the party. And the song is well crafted anyhow, so that definitely helps.

The album really is damn near perfect and we're talking a 20 track LP. Hard to pull that off. The only song I don't care for is "The Mall". I would replace that with the B-Side "So Wassup?!". Just me though.

much less 15 and up. While we're talking about The Ownerz, one of the only problems with that album was it didn't up the ante from MoT. SOme of the songs feel like it was less collaborative than their other records for some reason, but that's about it.

>The only song I don't care for is "The Mall".

which is why, as much as i hold this record as legendary, it has 2 clunkers on it for me.
it really just speaks to how strong the rest of it is that it can have 2 throwaways and still be universally considered a classic.
that my have to do with the length of the record too - you could do away with those tracks and its still a prolific record

When the albums dropped, Rep Grows Bigga was the sleeper.

Mostly due to the dumb ass interlude before it but the beat was also more basic than the rest and was the song that didn't seem like they were swinging for the fences to me.

She Knows What She Wants has a dope ass beat and adds the female song that every album needs.

And The Mall, while corny in theory, was well executed.

The chorus for "The Mall" is wackest shit ever on a Gangstarr track. It basically ruins that song, which does indeed have a dope beat and G-Dep verse. You'd think someone would've said, "Nah, man. That shit has gotta go."

I don't know if Sun Rises get's its due on fantastic Primo albums, but musically it's right next to Livin proof to me. I'm still mad there was no rhyme over that Perverted Monks skit, but that shit was so dope it didn't need one. The Fat Joe scratch on You Can't Stop The Prophet is perfection and we won't even mention the monster that is Come Clean

In response to Reply # 0

Simply because Sun Rises was greater than the sum of its parts. Moment of Truth was killer song after killer song, and like Popp said it is unfathomable how well it held up being 20 god damn songs long. Only one or two songs on MoT could have been left off and even they weren't too bad individually.

Sun Rises to me is Premier really trying to do something totally different than anything else in his career and he hit it out of the park. It was clear by Wrath of the Math that he had settled into a great formula that would be mastered at Moment of Truth and then fall into what I would call complacency around The Ownerz.

What does make Moment of Truth so great is that is the quintessential songs-album where any song is accessible individually and requires no information about what came before or after it. That itself is very valuable and harder to execute on the order of over a dozen songs.

Moment of Truth was Premier at the top of his game, but Sun Rises is Premier at his most brilliant, as weird as that may sound.

We've done this before and it was a dope post.

And this isn't to knock Guru at all because I wouldn't change a thing about MoT (other than the Intro to Rep Grows Bigga)...

But take ANY beat from that album and say who you would've loved to rock it?

And fuck it...to make it cool...who would you like to have featured on that beat with Guru?

I'd put KRS or Kane on Militia, and have Busta and Freddie Foxxxx battle it out for the title of Last Verse Killer. I can hear G. Rap on My Advice to You or Make Em Pay, and I'd give Slick Rick Royalty. Masta Ace on JLK to LAX, and Rakim on What I'm Here For. CL Smooth on She Knows What She Wants is a perfect match. Khujo Goodie on Betrayal.

Not that it needed one but it had a major resurgence with me like 6 or 7 years ago when I heard this remix....which also turned out to be an absolute gem with 3 great verses. I particularly love Royce's verse, 1 because I'm a Royce stan but 2 because I love the last bar. Sway & Tech slowed the beat down a bit but I like what they did with the track.

it's an all-time great performance.
Moment of Truth plays like it's not only talking to everybody else that doubted him, but to himself as well. He uses very precise wordings in his verses, and because of that he doesn't waste sentiment. It's really easy to feel and understand what he's saying, and how it makes him feel not just to experience it, but to be able to say it in a verse. Without having to scream, or cry, or threaten everybody, his internal struggle with his own insecurities (as well as with things like alcohol) plays out in a way that hasn't really been seen since.
There's people that are more lyrical, tell better stories, or flow better, but nobody emotes on a record without being emotional like Guru. I can't think of another time I've heard an emcee be so confident while displaying vulnerability-not bragging, or being macho, but displaying true confidence.

MoT really is a fucking gem.

I can't see an argument for any of their other albums being better other than nostalgia or personal reference.

Primo was in a fucking zone and Guru...as we both have just said...gave the best performance of his career.

This shit is a top 5 album for me.

because it was Gang Starr dong what Gang Starr always does, and not some sort of stylistic fusion of a bunch of other shit. But that album hasn't left my rotation since the day it came out.

Guru's performance on that album was special. You just nailed it better than I ever could have.

Gonna have to go listen to MoT today now. Haha.

Agreed. It's hands down Guru's best performance on the mic but I'd take Premier's production during his 94-95 run.

The First Jazzmatazz Album...

which is great by the way....

is moment of truth better than the Phryme Album?

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

79. "Best Primo Album is "Sun Rises In The East""

I would've said "Livin' Proof" but Jaz-O & Guru each produced one track on it so it's not entirely an Premier produced album; but "Sun Rises In The East" is better than any Gang Starr album but no disrespect to Guru cause "Step In the Arena" is my favorite G.S. album and full of dopeness, so is "Hard To Earn", "Moment Of Truth", "Wrath Of The Math", & "Owners".
