"why do people say apples and oranges with Music again?"

bottom line if you are signed to a major label you are expected to make hits or you are a tax write off and all acts strive for the same thing be it on there own agenda, they trying to be heard and seen.

if Nas and Jay Z are both on the Pop Charts then all bets all off.

I judge artists by how well they do what I think
they are trying to do.

so I don't knock sade for being more boring than p-funk,
but I will knock a band that tries to be p-funk, and fails.

I'm sad that this line of thinking is a hard sell. It seems so logical to me to approach music in this way (in addition to just listening and liking what you like). I remember 'figuring it out' for sure during the Jay/Nas conversations. I'm semi-sad to see history repeating itself with Aubrey/Kendrick. And in this case it is even more obvious that those guys aren't shooting at the same targets.

Even more hilarious (now) is the idea that fighting over KONY was the thing. Now, who is that even?

it doesn't exist.

you can have a decent conversation about comparing artists
if you frame it like:

this artist is good at ______ (bright horns, sing-songy melodies, melancholy lyrics, glossy production)

other artists that went for a similar target are inferior because ____ .

but you can't compare artists that do those things to, say... the wu tang clan, because they obviously aren't striving
for the same objective.

and since nobody can definitely say that
one aesthetic is better than another,
the conversation will go off the rails.

The jay and nas comparrisons rarely make sense.
They make more sense than beatles/ stones and
MJ / prince...

but jay and snoop would be a better comparrison.
hell, jay and biggie would be a better comparison.

and to be honest, some artists are so good at what they do
that no comparrisons are warranted.
they have their own sound and you either like it or don't.

Some recent research suggests aesthetics may be hardwired.

There are a bunch more that I can only access through my college's subscription databases, so the links won't work here. Some citations:

Some to do with sexual selection, some with universal standards, some with context.
