"Poll question: Who's been your favourite Timbaland production partner?"
Fri Feb-13-15 09:26 AM by Af-1

Tim's done pretty well with people he's worked with over the years but when you assess how he's worked with each of his behind the scenes collaborators (whether it's been the songwriters like Missy and Static) or production partners (like Danja or J-Roc), then who would you say has brought the best out of him behind the boards?

Poll result (13 votes)
Missy Elliot (6 votes)Vote
Static (2 votes)Vote
Danja (4 votes)Vote
J-Roc (0 votes)Vote
Other (1 votes)Vote

Too hard to call for me but the Danja influence was wild

from one of his interviews:

“We didn’t discuss any concepts with Future Sex/Love Sounds, everything just came out. ‘What Goes Around’ was the very first song we did for the start of that album. I like to have the studio for a little bit before anyone, so I got in there before Timb and when he came I just started playing that core sound with the guitar. Then he came right in with the drums. And Justin just started walking around the room humming melodies. The track took a couple hours and the song took two days.

‘My Love’ came after “What Goes Around.” Timb did a track before where I was just stuck questioning why am I even doing this. I think I was stuck for one day or two. Funny because that song he did didn’t even make the album even though Justin did a song to it… ‘My Love’ changed the whole album. I had some songs I was experimenting with and I kept asking how can I flip this. Justin had this guy named J Anderson and he heard what I was doing in my headphones and was like ‘What the fuck is that?!’ I heard dance and techn and was always interested in it but didn’t really know where to go. But I went to a club one night and saw that people were losing their mind to these dance tracks. It wasn’t really that I wanted to mimic that sound. I just wanted to have that energy and have people going crazy. So I knew the fusion was putting R&B with trance. As soon as I put the boom boom kat, I knew it.

A lot of is definitely me and Timb came through and added a couple of things later, he beatboxed on it of course and add a couple little sounds. The basis of it was is me and then we collaborated on the finish of it. The energy from that song carried for a long time. That whole album brought a newness to the business."

That techno existed prior to FSLS

As opposed to Tim who tried to pretend he had never heard drum n bass before in 2002

I kinda think he immersed himself in that sound perhaps a little too much as his music progressed though.

I liked his Danja era. The work he did on JT, Nelly Furtado, etc. Is some of my favorite Tim stuff. Even a few joints on that Duran Duran album. I know I'm probably in the minority on that.

I never heard anything from the Duran Duran stuff - would be interesting to hear what came out of that. Also I never heard his stuff with Chris Cornell apart from the lead single which also wasn't very well-received.

I'd magically become Tim's best friend, and all we'd do is make Aaliyah records.

To answer the question, the Missy era is my fave. I was floored by almost everything I heard then. FS/LS and both 20/20's have some crazy heaters on them, though.

The Missy stuff is pretty epic - 'Can We', 'What About Us', 'Hot Like Fire', 'Make it Hot', etc.

The 1st album was great but a little heavy on the Hee Hee Hee Haw
2nd album was Matrix'd out but had a few misses imo..but only 2 or 3
So Addictive had old school r&b, house & funk plus Timbo-hop (Slap Slap Slap)
Under Construction is my personal fave - Tim is bananas on that..Gossip Folks, Play That Beat..there were on one
This Is Just A Test felt like a continuation of UC but there was something not clicking..but it has Let It Bump
The Cookbook was good but had hardly any Tim (Joy is a banger tho)

I have a bit of bias here.. My nephew falls into the "other" category so ima have to say Jim Beanz. That considered, I'd say Danja as a VERY close 2nd.
