jonesydaking:
Noz I think it’s weird that add much as you slander Hov from time to time to put all of his albums as the best albums of the 2000s. You stand by Supa Ugly and Takeover add being superior to Ether, pay live jay z videos and you said Dear Summer is your favorite Memphis Bleek. Bruh you know jay z one of your favorite rappers

noz:
Honestly man fuck Jay-Z. He was my favorite rapper back when he rapped about toting guns to the Grammys and popping bottles on the White House lawn but his influence in the 21st century has been completely detrimental in my humble opinion. He made it corny to write your rhymes down and made fitted hats match with button down shirts. He made disaffected cool the default stylistic mode for a certain breed of rapper thereby setting the emotional spectrum of East Coast hip hop back at least a decade and leaving a bunch of sad broke huffy 40 year old men trapped in a prison made of Avirex jackets saying things like heat on the counter like a microwave for all of eternity. He made horrible music with Linkin Park and Coldplay and The Roots for no other reason than to appeal to the worst sorts of white people, the ones who still hate rap and probably black people too. He tried - and of course failed - to shut down autotune, the catalyst for some of the most thrilling vocal innovations the genre has seen since Kool Moe Dee first invented fast rap on the toilet in the ’80s. He reduced tragic and conflicted geniuses like Biggie, Pac, Kurt and Basquiat to mere props in his quest to become the type of corporate boardroom dickhead they all would’ve rolled their eyes or spat at. He promoted the myth of attaining some sort of objective individual greatness through hip hop over the very realistic goal of community growth. He made compromised crossover the principal ambition for an entire generation of would-be serious rappers. (As opposed to, say, Puff or P who were unapologetic capitalists but who never once pretended to be great artists.) And worse than all of that he forgot how to rap well along the way.

I know he is a role model for a lot of people who mistakenly think personal liberation can be achieved through fame and monetary wealth and hey if that is what is getting you through your day then live that day with pride but from where I am sitting everything he has done post-retirement falls somewhere between pathetic and destructive. Except I did like it the one time when he said “I’m afraid of the future.”

he has some hot joints.
but the overwhelming majority of his catalogue is trash.

I would probably hate him lees if it wasn't for his tendancy
to ruin perfectly great records by talking over top of them.

but he does that pretty frequently.
at his corniest, will smith did puffy's schick better than him.
and by even comparing will smith to puffy,
I feel like I am disrespecting the legacy of will smith.

I acrually like nas slightly less
because he appeared on hate me now with puffy...
and nas is probably my favorite rapper, next to ghost.

my hatred for puffy runs deep.
calling him an artist seems wrong.

PE 2000 and I need a girl were hot.

the songs from the first album you posted were
pretty terrible.

actually, my mom bought me all about the benjamins
in one of many attempts to make me give rap a chance.
I was not impressed at the time and I still hate those songs.

Like I said, he has a few hot joints.
More money more problems...
I need a girl pt 1...

the adlibs on big poppa...

um... show me your soul?
I liked that one.

Did he spit a verse on that 112 comeback single in 2003?
that song was hot.

as a general rule, though... he's terrible.

That Shades track is hot too but JT may have dropped the worst verse of the last five years at the end

who are just as obsessed with personal wealth and capitalist accumulation, under the guise of aesthetic progression, as he claims Jay is. ignorance and promotion of black death and or capitalism is all good as long as its the NEW NEW cool. FOH

I still agree with Noz's critiques though.

Yet, Jay for some reason has become an easy target when every major label artist circa 2001-2007 dumbed down and diluted the culture within the mainstream for profit.

Maybe cause most fell off and faded into obscurity they don't get the backlash Jay gets, but Nelly, Wayne, the Dips, Joey Crack, Snoop, Busta, Petey Pablo, Khaled, DJ Drama, 4DL, Pitbull, Flo Rida, al those MFers deserve the same hate Jay gets

None of the names have Jay's power though...

This imo is a case of wanting him to do better because you think he should since he is in the position he is in..

When he NEVER gave you a reason to think he would be some sort of Activist at heart of some kind of community uplifter..

>None of the names have Jay's power though...

did you miss my point? no shit he has more power. he invested and married Bey, the others they fell off, are becoming legacy acts, or made bad business decisions. Only Puff and Baby are Jay's equals in terms of cultural capital. they are who he should be compared to now a days, not other rappers

>This imo is a case of wanting him to do better because you
>think he should since he is in the position he is in..

I never wanted this from him, that's why I believe the critiques are half-hearted and one sided, and really full of shit. Jay is nothing more than another example of the the one-dimensionality of capitalist success.

The more interesting angle would be to speak on the 5% angle and introspection found on many of Jay's records post 2009, even though his technical ability has fallen off.

>When he NEVER gave you a reason to think he would be some sort
>of Activist at heart of some kind of community uplifter..
>
exactly. he rhyming about dope, guns, bitches, and money from the marcy projects and folks wants DP, Mos, Talib, and Common sort of political and social activism

I would give Snoop a BIT of a pass though. I don't feel he does a lot of "cash-in" work much anymore. Or really hasn't since "Paid Tha Co$t".

Fat Joe though. Even though I liked some of his stuff, since "Lean Back", he definitely has gone there

Even though I disagree with the Takeover/Super Ugly > Ether assertion; that's a personal "card revoke", Jay-Z post Black Album has been on a slow decline and esp. post American Gangster, IMO the last stand of "real Jay Z", the "look at me, I'm rich, I'm cool" BS has worn thin, and it's also hurt his rhyming.
