"was Bobby Brown close to being considered an all time great?"
when you factor in his New Edition career and his solo career and impact. also to me he was the last important song and dance cat for the short window he had.
or do you consider him an all time great?

>His first solo didn't make any impact, but if he'd been able >to follow up 'Bobby', he might have had a chance, given how >big 'don't be cruel' was. > >that said, i'm not sure that much of his music holds up - or >even how long it did.
Go to a Party with a 30 and up Crowd and play some Bobby Brown it's gonna get hype.
7. ""Don't Be Cruel" holds up. Tracks 2-6 specifically are still monstrous...." In response to Reply # 4
>how about you take me through my points and explain how they >are wrong?
The people who he made the album for, still love the hell out of those jams. You take those five songs away, and there's no reason to even consider this post. But those five hit so hard, you have to think about what else he had besides that. Imo the answer is, not nearly enough to make him an all time great.

I mean, even here in sweden, "Don't be cruel" was a massive album but by the time "Bobby" came out, it was too late. Don't get me wrong, it was big and he g4ot hits but I never hear "humping around" anymore in like any context whereas I still hear the hits off "Don't be cruel" any now or then. "Bobby" was not an era/time defining record whereas "Don'rt be cruel" very much was and the problem is that while you "always" hear the era/time defining records if you are interested in the past of music as opposed to now, he has very little to show, unfair or not...
And even a major album might not help too much nowadays when people have just as easy access to, say, the first Guy album and may come to the natural conclusion that it is stronger. Hits and multi-platinum sales only matter in the short run in many cases, I remember the article about sale-statistics where it was mentioned that "Don't be cruel" sold in the range of like 500 copies every year on amazon. ,

True that his debut wasn't all that. Don't Be Cruel was a MONSTER and I really, really like BOBBY. "Good Enough" was Cruel level hit and "Two Can Play that Game" is a stand out as is "That's the Way Love Is". I think people dismisses that album because it was so rooted on the NJS sound but there was some great sings. I even love "Something in Common", at that time Bob and Whit were approaching Jay and Bey level.

After putting out Bobby, his personal demons were getting the best of him big time. While it wasn't the same level of Don't Be Cruel he still did solid sales & he was still relevant. He just let that pipe take over man.. In that era from '87-'92 Bobby Brown was the man.
