"Tetsuo and Youth discussion: take #3"
Wed Jan-28-15 10:05 AM by mrhood75

Shots are thrown in damn near every post so why is it just the Tetsuo & Youth posts that are being cancelled? Lupe delivered AOTY material. It must be discussed.

That said, it was the best discussion post I've seen in a while on here. I wish it wouldn't have gotten closed because despite the few insults that were there, it was more good than bad.

I wish certain comments would be deleted, or certain users be blocked, instead of entire threads biting the dust like that. But I guess that would enable BS too

I'm not trying to stifle discussion on anything. If people have more to say about the album, cool. Have at it. But again, keep the discussion about the music.

Wanted to sit with the album a bit...

DId Lupe kinda self-sabotage his album by having Murals as track 2?

I mean, I like the album, but nothing really stands up to Murals (IMO)...

I knew I'd like "Chopper" from Lu's IG posts about it. I love anything with Buk from PsychoDrama I can get my hands on, since Adrenaline Rush. It's pretty high on my list of favorite Lupe songs, but it won't top "Theme Music for a Drive-By".

filet mignon with my food stamps
^ he can eat like a king without a job

car co-signed by my mama
^ he can drive without his credit being too good

medical card from obama
^ he's got obama care so who needs a benefits plan?

background check for a choppah
^ he can easily obtain a gun with a simple background check

i take the hook as commentary on how easy it is for him to be a gangster

it makes more sense when coupled with his own verse at the end:

Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop
AR-15 with collapsible stock
Picatinny rail with a three-point harness
With 150 round magazine and a dot
FMJ’s by the box, nigga
Got the same setup as the SWATs, nigga
Shouldn’t find that surprising
Cause I bought the muthafucka from a cop
Ay, seen a lot of brown money as a shorty
Welfare baby can’t afford me
Healthcare there, I ain’t worried
Healthcare there, I ain’t worried
Excuse me, as I repeat myself
Work twice as hard to complete myself
My opposition is not pretending
When I work twice as hard to defeat myself
Fuck being a hip hop purist
When I'm spendin’ 50 thousand on Securus
Embrace the contradiction, you’ll feel us
RIP to the homies but long live the killas
It’s why I look at God kinda odd
Cause these are the cards that he deal us
Ramen can’t fill us, Medicare can’t heal us
And the mamas can’t stop us
And these choppers might kill us
Look these wild niggas in they eyes
In the video it's some niggas that done died
Looked the ghosts in the face and I cried
No Wu-Tang, just Lu gang when I ride
With an L up sayin’ "free da guys" like I’m Durk
With a clean record but I’m cursed
To make a half a million off a verse
Nigga, chop

I personally love the honesty of the "in the video it's some niggas that done died, looked the ghosts in the face and I cried, no Wu-Tang, just Lu gang when I ride"

he's referring to the interview when Sway played him an old video of him and he had to make him stop because there were a lot of guys in the video who are dead and he felt like he was looking at ghosts. he actually broke into tears during that interview. it was on MTV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-212NHll2o

then coupling that with the "looked the Ghosts in the Face and I cried, no Wu-Tang..." - just a nice play on words with the Ghostface reference.

i love Chopper btw, makes me wanna ride around the city with the windows all the way down

In response to Reply # 18

Which follows it.

Long gangland song with a ton of features into the hook of Deliver with "too many niggas on the porch"

The whole vibe of Deliver is that the pizza man is scared to come to the hood. I think the theme of Chopper sets that up nicely.

Some others have pointed out that the main line of the hook "pizza man won't come here no more" can also be interpreted as "peace of mind won't come here no more" and I think Lupe's final verse on Chopper alludes to why that is.

Ha.. yea.. I mean I know the basic concept.. (scottish rite.. Egyptian builder references ). But I think I uncovered a different layer..

I've realized it's more fun to try and decode some of the stuff than getting the full explanation anyway..

Not crazy about some of the beats but he's really on some foolish behavior with the verses. He's approaching the songs from the place of a craftsman, and not someone trying to have a typical rapper end result. He put the music first, which is something pretty much all of his peers should follow suit on.

This album made me think about rappers approaching their albums as producing art rather than a product. A dope album with an artistic approach that isn't easily digested seems rare in mainstream rap.

I can always appreciate that sort of effort, it keeps me coming back. I remember well when artists would go 2-4 years between releases and it was an event to get another album. But we'd rock the previous album the entire wait time with no problem if it was good enough.

That's a commentary on how hipsters have low self esteem
and craft their opinions on artists based on how others
will will receive it

That's the only reason one even thinks to make that point

Lupe's been the best rapper on earth for several years now,
so people who don't feel that way have had no problem saying
he's dope.

He's been one of the best rappers in the game since he entered it
He's also made a couple trash albums
A lot of GOAT artists have
That's the nature of being the best (in any artistic genre/medium) - you push yourself when others don't
And it doesn't always work out
And Sometimes it's the opposite - they see how far ahead they are and they get complacent

That's a commentary on how hip hop's critical establishment
doesn't form opinions on their own. They form them based on
how others perceive them. There has been no bigger victim of
this Lemming mentality than Lupe Fiasco. People stopped thinking
it was COOL to like him, whether they actually thought he was
making good music or not.

We let Jay-Z make horrible album after horrible album (and
I'm a huge Jay fan) with a total pass. The reason Jay didn't
get taken to task for Blueprint 3 (a truly awful record, far
worse than anything Lupe has ever put out) is that it was
still COOL to love Jay-Z. This is why he received no backlash.

Its pathetic. I don't know if its "cool" to like
Ka or "cool" to not like Rocky Marciano. I feel how I feel
because I listen to the music and form an opinion.

Lupe has been dope. If someone heard "Jonylah Forever" and
still didn't think it was "Cool to Love Lupe Fiasco," then
they deserve to get punched in the jaw, straight up.

it is a very rewarding listen. multiple entendres thematically.

i've also listened to the album in reverse sequence a few times. i prefer the actual sequence. while it makes for a darker, more pessimistic ending, i do think the focus is honed with each track. "adoration..." into "t.r.o.n." is devastating. i hear it as a world that's already been turned to metal (as in tetsuo, the film); it's the world that these kids are born into. listening to it backwards offers a more triumphant ending, but the through-line frays.

not a fan of a couple of beats, nor a few hooks. but i will say that overall, this is a well-crafted album. i think it's his best, even over food & liquor.

So far I have the religious theme (1st verse), mistreatment of common food/high cost of the "good" foods (2nd verse), and the former romance (throughout the song). I just started REALLY getting into this song a day or two ago, but WOW. Beat is so smooth too.

My personal top 3 in no order are:

Krs
Nas
Ghostface

Lupe is literally all three of those dudes rolled into one.

He can do the street poet narrative of Nas, have cryptic lyrics you gotta analyze and bounce around your head like Ghost, and can make you feel represented and proud in your Blackness like KRS. ALL while for the most part making his statements in an intellectual presentation that the mainstream can digest in some sort of "respectability" shit when deep down he is SOOO blatant and hiding this anger in plain sight.

I love this album and look forward to listening to it on a daily basis. Can't pick a favorite right now; before Prisoner 2 had me stuck, then Body of Work, then Mural. Right now Madonna is some craziness. The lyrics and imagery and delivery is all so surgically placed. This is how I want to write, on just levels upon levels.

Hope it gets an AOTY nom just to show its achievement. Next year there will be college courses on it.

I chalk it up to different tastes

I love the album. One producer friend of mine likes the lyrics but isn't a huge fan of the production.

I think it's just a taste thing so we aren't clashing. He gets why I like it, but he doesn't like it immensely himself.

But on the other hand I have a whole bunch of friends going crazy for the album so I know I'm not alone in my campaign for this project.

In response to Reply # 47

Eh - the production is the weakest link, imo. Some nice moments but very little jumped out at me on my first few listens. It's in that weird space where a lot of it feels like it's trying *really* hard to be epic and as a result comes off a bit contrived. The vocalists on the hooks don't help.

But Lupe's rhymes not only save the project but make me forget that I'm not really feeling the music all that much, lol...

but at its high points, the album feels sublime.

In response to Reply # 0

Sure that's a backhanded compliment. Even a dis if you want. Whatevers.

I haven't done all the knowledge on every line so forgive me for dropping the super scientific analysis on that front. On the flow tip he's got runs for days, and the craft he takes with actually putting words together is pretty much unmatched in the sphere of contemporary shit today. But his voice don't fluctuate that much. And not in the guru, rakim style monotone that pulls you in. He's a little shall we say nasally.

Don't get me wrong I'm not knew to this. FNF Up mixtapes and all that. I always think of that Lupe, still posting on OKP, having fun on tracks while straight spazzing out. He had something to prove, but understood his place so wasn't stressing trying to prove it like that. I loved the voice back then.

Now for reference Q-Tip has a, what are we calling it, nasally, voice. And when you break it down Tip is at his best when he's on some have fun shit too. Bit he can get serious too, and its not so much his voice changes but you can feel the emotion behind it. Lupe I feel it too, but it's different. And it's a consistent tone on this, which does well for the theme, but imho his voice can't carry the whole way through.

To me at least a big part of that is the production. Shit doesn't reach deep into your soul and wrench out emotion. Lupe's gotta carry all that in his voice, and his voice just isn't dynamic enough for me on this. He's dynamic, but his voice isn't. That's where the Macklemore comparison comes in. Because you put Macklemore on this shit rapping about just about anything... But Lupe is the far superior MC which kinda makes it a coup on his sound (I'm just calling it his sound idgaf who's sound it really is, it sucks). You just don't here spit like this over that sound.

All that said, the writing is supurb and for that alone it stands up. It's just not quite the full package. Best he's done by far. Hopefully it keeps his doors open so he can go in even deeper the next album.

Lupe's mic presence is definitely less formidable than it's been in the past. The lyrics are there, and the production/choruses are there. But his voice does make it more difficult to digest

In response to Reply # 0

because (and I'm mostly speculating based from the Sway interview) it seems that Atlantic was on the same shit in the prelude to this album: forced singles for radio, withholding release dates.

Are the hackers really the only reason this album finally saw the light or did the label cave in once the album started to take shape. The way Lupe words it in the interview, he kinda just let Atlantic punch themselves out and then he came with all of this material afterwards.

This album as is was not gonna drop on a major label, someone's hand got forced. Which explains why it dropped in JANUARY of all months. Atlantic does not care about this album, and I'm good with that.

Dude ain't moving units either. Why would they want to duplicate that failure? Lu stuck to his guns and released a masterpiece. I can't see another rap album topping this in 2015. I rank Lu albums as such...

5. Lasers (2011)
4. Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1 (2012)
3. Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor (2006)
2. Lupe Fiasco's The Cool (2007)
1. Tetsuo & Youth (2015)

In response to Reply # 76

contrary to the studio albums, BOB is a very good, skilled rapper who was pushed in the wrong direction by Atlantic. Now, because the plan to popify BOB failed he's going backward in order to claim a lot of rap fans that he lost in that Airplanes era.

I wonder how many of those pop songs BOB ended up with were pushed on Lupe first. Something tells me Airplanes wasn't the first.

but they're the same "kind" of song. Bars and bars for bars. Then change it up. Just rapping ass rapping ass wordplay. Use this theme for a little bit then switch it up, maybe come back to it in a few bars. Repeat.

I don't think Lupe's done that since Failure. Despite people always wanting that from him since he showed us he was capable of crazy wordplay like that.

And the wordplay isn't the only thing that's special
about Mural.

Mural is Mural because the phrases and images create a
weird emergent listening experience, where they build
on themselves...creating a Mural.

It's pretty much it's own kind of music, because rap doesn't
really do this, especially anymore (Nas has done this...few
others, though).

Not disagreeing, just clarifying.
