"I couldn't name one Bob Dylan song if my life depended on it."

And I DO consider myself among the "musically elite". I listen to everything and I'm pretty confident that I can hold a convo with anyone on nearly any artist/genre/musical era. I realized I know nothing of Dylan's music with the announcement of him giving away his album to AARP members, and them mentioning his age. I'm somewhat embarrassed by this, but the crazy thing is I don't see myself attempting to change this fact. It's just the way it is. Any major artists you guys have the same issue with?

I just don't know his music, which is a little shocking to me at least given that I'm such a music fan. I'm not going to slander the man, I just came to that realization at the announcement of his age, and the knowledge that he has a ton of music out. I still don't think that precludes me from having a convo about literally any type of music as you seem to think it does. I look at it like no matter what type of music any one says they love, or feel a level of expertise in, there will inevitably be an artist who they've never listened to. The greatness of that artist is really the only thing measurable. Would you not agree?

Sam Cooke wrote "A Change Is Gonna Come" because he heard Dylan's "Blowing In The Wind"
and felt it should have been written by a Black man due to the civil rights struggles
of Black folks at the time (still segregated). Sam even began covering "Blowin In The Wind" live at his
shows a little before he wrote "A Change Is Gonna Come", which was immediately
picked up by the civil rights movement as an anthem of sorts upon release.
Sam died almost a year after he released it.

If I'm not mistaken I believe Dylan performed at the I Have A Dream speech.

Could be wrong but I remember seeing that on a documentary at some point.

Was watching this doc on Netflix about the Folk scene in Greenwich Village in NY in the 60's. They all pretty much said they didn't like him when he first came through. They said he couldn't sing and couldn't play guitar. But he looked the part, they also all held the same prprospective with him socially. And after getting to know him, they could could at least understand where his lyrics were coming from. Even though he didn't have the technical part of the music down.

When he first came through, there were literally hundreds of other guys doing the same things he was doing, covering old songs. He just didn't stand out to the same extent (I mean, they already had Ramblin' Jack Eliot for the faux hobo scene) that he would after he began writing, and it took a while for him to actually get good. It was really only after Joan Baez picked up (him and) several of his songs that he started gaining the 'voice of a generation' status.

I haven't seen the doc you're talking about, but I'd recommend a few things:
-The Mayor of MacDougal Street - Dave Van Ronk & Elijah Wald
-Positively 4th Street - David Hajdy
- 'The Other Side of the Mirror' DVD (Dylan at Newport 1963-65); he goes from this joyous kid in 1963 who's just happy people want to hear him song to this asshole in 1965 giving the finger to the people who've made his career.

I'm always kind of surprised at people clowning Dylan's ability early on; he was more than competent on guitar, and his singing was very much in line with a certain folk revival aesthetic (just not the pop-folk aesthetic.)

when I said 'I'm not sure I buy that in entirety' that pretty much means 'sort of, but you're not seeing a wide-screen view here.'

"They all pretty much said they didn't like him when he first came through."

Not sure who you mean by 'they.' I'm assuming you mean other influential folkies from within the scene - Tom Paxton, Dave van Ronk, Carolyn Hester, etc. But I don't know, so *shrug*

"They said he couldn't sing and couldn't play guitar."

Yeah, I don't know that I buy that. Compared to a lot of the Village folkies, he was quite good instrumentally. His first recording session was actually as a harmonica accompanist.

" But he looked the part, they also all held the same prprospective with him socially."

Dylan tried really hard to fit in with what he thought the scene in the Village wanted, even to the point of making up his own backstory. When he was eventually 'outed' it was a bit of a minor scandal. Sort of equivalent, in '60s Village folknik terms, to Vanilla Ice.

But then he started writing songs, and before long that changed everything.

" And after getting to know him, they could could at least understand where his lyrics were coming from. Even though he didn't have the technical part of the music down. "

And here it seems you're conflating a few years over which Dylan developed very rapidly. When he first got to NYC in 1961, he wasn't even writing his own songs. And reportedly the first original song he started pestering people to hear was 'Song to Woody,' which was kind of lightweight by most measures. A lot of his early songs (including a few important ones, like Hard Rain) were based stylistically or lyrically on structures, melodies, or lyrical phrases taken from traditional songs, as well, and that was no problem at all for the scene.
But he got good, and really fast. By early 1963 his songs were getting exposure from Joan Baez and Pete Seeger, who were as big as big could be at that point.

*shrug*

Out of curiosity, if you remember the name of the documentary you saw, mention it.

Im not american though, maybe I've heard one song but didn't know it was him ... I think I saw one of his most recent video clip though, it was verry cinematic, a blond girl killing a man or getting killed, can't remember.
