"pretending you actually liked dipset helped obliterate NYC rap."
Thu Jan-22-15 08:04 PM by patek_fleek

you still have got 38 year old "aspiring rappers" in new york wearing bandanas, leather bombers, baggy jeans and over-sized fitteds rapping over high pitch soul sample beats without a trace of self-awareness in 2015...

and that energy-less rapping-like-you-are-recovering-from-a-stroke shit?

how has that aged now that it has no "buzz"?

http://www.worldstarhiphop.com/videos/video.php?v=wshh0031y9Q84x95a7Dd

oh... and you say the migos are wack rappers?

lol.

Eminem and Macklemore are big for a reason irrespective of their talents
all of Hip Hop has to deal with reaching target markets
stattic wasn't the Dipset demographic and rather than say "I didn't like it" or "I didn't get it" he insulted them and their audience. that entitlement to speak definitively about Hip Hop is a very white thing. I called it out, and it's offensive because how dare I

but by all means continue your passive aggressive dick sucking and stalking me across multiple forums. it's been on and off for years now and it persists no matter how much attention I dont give you

In response to Reply # 78

1) your whiteness lacks understanding of their music (my original conclusion, which isn't really offensive)

2) you can't wrap your mind around the concept of hometown pride, which would make you either unaware of where I'm from (which is fine) or just dimwitted if you knew and couldn't put two and two together. You can't insult E-40 to a person from The Bay, same applies here

3) you're racist calling an authentic street act "clowns for dummies", because they arent the Hip-Hop you enjoy consuming as a white man. I'm guessing this is the least likely conclusion, but I wont put it completely past you

either way, all three options reek of self-entitlement and Im sure you're not used to being called out on your shit

but here's a mix I played a part in putting together if you care to be educated https://soundcloud.com/djrtistic/dipset-mix-goinradiocom

and that's not offensive either, but the truth, and you are the entitled one here, not me. You have decided to be the arbiter of who is worthy to criticize music, not me. I just presented an opinion that others have seemed to share.

Only a small-minded person tries to use hometown pride as some sort of buffer to criticism. I don't really care where you are from, and I certainly do not need to check-in with you to make sure that said act that I want to comment on is not from your hometown before I post my opinion. Who do you think you are? You're posting like someone who isn't a long-running OKP joke, and I don't mind being called out on an opinion, but surely isn't going to be by you and your feeble-minded assessments.

And frankly not that it should matter and it's pathetic for you to even bring any sort of understanding of street into a conversation about music, but I would be truly surprised if you have really been touched by 'street authentic' elements to the same degree that I have in my life. Just because you sat around in your parents' house, not realizing your dreams and being a general disappointment, in the same hometown as this corny crew does not make your opinion any more relevant than someone elses. You're embarrassing yourself, so engage with someone who won't eviscerate you like I just did.

your white opinion is meaningless. I said as much from jump

>Only a small-minded person tries to use hometown pride as some

it's not a buffer to criticism. you can't call a movement that took my neighborhood global "clowns for dummies" and not expect me to speak up.

I don't really care where you are

This is pure comedy. You're the child here, just a bystander stan who, like a child, lashes out unreasonably when someone criticizes his favorite group. Only a child starts talking about street authenticity, race, and hometown pride in response to criticism. The sad thing is that you think this way in earnest. I hope you feel better now that you've thrown your tantrum.

no lack of insight here. despite being a white male, you aren't qualified to speak on certain things

congratulations, you bragged on the internet about your family being degenerates. "I can assess black culture because my family committed crimes most commonly associated with blackness" is white entitlement Inception.

edit to add: it's pretty racist for you to string together street credibility with talk of your family's criminal activity. but if that's a legitimate idea of what constitutes blackness to you, by all means feel free

They aren't associated with race, so don't forge connections that I never cited. I'm not bragging at all. Anyone who knows about this wouldn't even conceive of bragging about it. But you're not about that.

I'm calling into question your ability to criticize based on your stated criteria. So post the tales of your street life, dork.

me: you're white, what do you know about street rap?

you: my family went to jail and died based off of street shit

me: cool, how does that qualify you to assess music accurately?

you: shut up, tell me how many bodies you have on your gun

you're treading awfully close to "I have the right to say nigga" territory, it wouldn't shock me if you believe that at this point

I do have a pretty good understanding of their music's content from being surrounded by it, luckily I wasn't involved in any of it

the only time I've been to a jail was visiting a friend who caught a dumb identity theft charge in college, my only times in court were paying off a jaywalking ticket and a hearing for an unemployment dispute

you being white and challenging me to post street tales in a post about music is about as racist as it gets.

is as racist as it gets. Sorry, if you lack street authenticity, you really have no business criticizing street rap. If there is a group that starts rapping about living in their parents' basement and projecting their insecurities and failures onto others, I'm coming to you for a review. I promise.

no clue where this parent's basement meme started or why it's being used in 2015, but go with whatever you need to keep your failing argument alive

but they only contributed to the dre strings/piano knock-off movement.

which was a cali sound.

only a few people "bit" 50's style of rapping... (check out grafh's 2007 debut "autografh" for an example of how an interesting rapper can take everything interesting about themselves and destroy it by trying to be somebody else.)

i'd say dipset had far worse reaching effects on new yorkers.

like i said, there are still oblivious old men making rap like it's 2003 in new york, nj, and philly.

it's largely due to the fact that people pretended they didn't suck (see: lil' b circa 2010-2012) and they were the last mainstream NYC rap act that utilized samples (aka sounded like they were an east coast rap act).

your options now if you're a shitty, non-trendsetting new york rapper is try to assimilate to the south or pretend your hell rell in the mid-00's.

I always liked Cam but the others were boo boo. I did grow to like a few songs because the energy was undeniable but I used to be pissed that they were getting major love while making music for babies. A sad time for the city.

I really liked 'SDE', especially the bootleg that floated around African blankets in NYC, but 'Come Home With Me' was a colossal let down coming off 'Oh Boy'.

I liked the Dipset album the way I like Living On a Prayer or Early Madonna songs.

Their little crew was the only one to

1)Acknowledge it outside of shitty 'my guns will make you fall like the towers' bars
2)Push NYC pride to the forefront

Yeah, it resulted in some horrible bejeweled american flag wear and the use of the world taliban as a positive but it's unabashed sense of we are NYC and don't give a fuck vibe=really the last gasp of NYC hip-hop. Yeah, they openy firted with non-regionalism musically but its not as if Cam showed up looking like a pink flamingo you would have no doublt he was a nyc nigga, nor would they let more then ten bars pass before they used the word 'Harlem'

As someone mentioned it above, G-Unit was the real death rattle.

early 02 dipset... or 2006 dipset.
because that dipset shit went on for waaaay longer than neccessary.

i mean are we blocking 2003/2004/2005/2006 out of memory when we talk about them now?

2001/2002 g-unit was managable for what they were.

it's when they became the focal point of rap that things spiraled out of control.

same with dipset.

them as footnotes, track 9 on a 18 cut misc. mixtape...
ok i can live with that.

people treating them as if they're the spotlight of nyc rap?
and then everyone over a certain age rapping like them for the next 14 years?

... which joins the rest of your posts on the front page in their stupidity, by just saying "i didn't like dipset's output post-2002."

instead, you're ignoring facts and complaining that it's dipset's fault that people still wear leather Avirex jackets in NYC. does anyone actually do that besides Papoose? do you even live in NYC to know whether or not they do (i doubt it, you seem too corny for NYC).

i can't wait til they ban you again.

no, what i'm saying is they, or more importantly, the people who pretended they actually liked their music are partly responsible for the huge smoking crater that is the NYC rap scene that has existed since the mid-late 00's.

and if you don't like the shit i'm posting, you don't have to reply.

but thanks regardless.

finally, who PRETENDS to like the Dips.

i ACTUALLY like Dipset, STILL like them. excited they're trying a comeback. as fan, it's my experience that you either love them or hate them.

haven't ran across these pretenders you seem to think exist.

i feel like you make up these rap hypotheses in your head then post about them like your thoughts actually exist IRL.

I don't know about "pretending"....

But I know that the Dip Set was the soundtrack for a lot of short-bus riding, silly as fuck, assholes who thought that Jim Jones and them were bringing New York hip-hop "back"...I dug maybe one or two Dip-Set joints. But most of the time that crew was rap for niggas who refused to move out of their parents living rooms....

i really don't get dipset hate in 2015
you either liked them when they were hot or you didn't
they clearly had *some* influence on pop culture and rap
they're not really relevant anymore
not sure what there is to debate about or hate on
just don't see a direct correlation between the dipset movement and the state of nyc rap in 2015
how many current rappers come from the dipset tree? french montana and who else?

dudes being over 35 and dressing like it's 1995 is not a dipset thing
it's a corny native new yorker thing. go to brooklyn or the bronx and you'll see a ton of niggas who either look like papoose clones or billy danze in his prime. it was like that before dipset even existed

there is nyc rap before dipset and after dipset.

it's really that simple.

go back and look at nyc rap in 2001.
go back and look at nyc rap in 2004.

and it's not the 90's these dudes are dressing like it's the mid-00's.
same with the beats and style of rap they make... straight 2003 shit.
except that was like 12 fucking years ago.

like i said, in NYC rap in 2015, either you assimilate to the south or you go back to the last popular NYC rap on mainstream level which was still the dipset movement 02-06.

If you disliked Dipset, and think that NYC rap nosedived as a result of their success, that's one opinion. An opinion I disagree with, but I get it. But it's pretty silly to just assume that a large amount of these people were just pretending to like Dipset. People have different musical tastes from you, and that's fine.

Bammer who is Black and Stattic who is white, both hated on Dips for different reasons, that were kinda similar

most posters came in here and said, nah Dips were dope for their time and the music they created.

their influence on culture and the art had positives and negatives, balance.

but you went ahead and made an empty headed race-based criticism, caught feelings, and derailed everything about Bammer's post that BigReg and SPM had already shut down with a few words.

THIS, is why posters come at you side ways
