We talk rap a lot... and obviously I am always pondering this question working with female artists.. but what are your thoughts?

Arguably Nicki Minaj is the last female artist since Rihanna to do so...

In the UK and abroad the issues aren't the same. Emile, Twigs, Lianne didnt have to break on "urban radio" before they smashed the charts.. but even in the US Emile (who sold 2m in UK) is relegated to opening for John and putting rap features on songs (and still didn't work)

Every year there is this constant rotation of what I like to call the "Letoya Luckett" space. The "almost it" girl not named Beyonce or Rihanna that has some songs that work at radio (Letoya, Kelly, Keri, Tinashe)

So what would it take.. I mean when was the last time a Black woman had Hot 100 #1?

EDIT: I mean Azealia should be worrying about this more than whether Iggy is hip hop.. like why cant you scale in your home country?

spunky as opposed to "sassy"

The music would probably have to be somewhat go-go ish (not the band The Go-Go's but the DC funk type music).

it more than sassy.

Go-go music has some "black" aspects.

Crossing over ain't doing what gets emphasized on R&B radio: "sassy-ness"

This has been my thought...

They are strong.. well defined.. without being scary.. white dudes want to fuck them.. and they tap into the international market well.

This is a global business now. If you can go top 10 in Australia you can go top 10 here..

even if it's more close to my musical taste (but she ain't old enough to make it really work)

i still say if twigs did an upbeat dance tune and had the right visuals...

then i think there's the other side of it with the right black female artist being promoted in the adele lane.

it could happen.

You are right about willow..

Essentially she is crossed over though.. like she is Hollywood royalty.. "Whip my hair" was 11 on the Hot 100

Twigs isn't American.. and weird.. and when is the last time we've allowed that to happen?

Yeah but her EP ain't doing shit because she waited too long and went the wrong route. It's not to damaging at this point, but it pushed her back to will and jada's kid territory. She needs like a string of three hits and she's set for life. And I think she's got em in her, but those kids ain't got no hunger and are more focused on their 'difference' than actually making it happen. That's no slight, I still root for em both. I think Jaden could do things if he focused and took direction.

See I disagree with the "Adele lane" thing..

Because that Literally was Emile Sande.. and it worked in the UK but barely scratched here...

because as soon as you touch down in US and you are black you have to be played on black radio.. and if black radio thinks its too pop it wont work..

Agreed...

I think that if an american breaks via licensing and overseas they can probably circumvent the urban radio gauntlet..

TBH that's how most of these random pop records are circumventing radio anyway...

Huge sync... leads to streams.. label takes notice throws radio money behind it.. boom

you could manufacture one. i actually don't think it'd be that hard to do.

shit just brainfarting. it may be a little too late now but by example. there's a new bond movie coming. so you get an artist that can really blow. obscenely lush production. and you do a series of youtube covers of the classic james bond themes, edited to clips from the respective movies. drop an ep called bond girls. with enough lead up time (which i don't think there is right now) build the buzz to get tapped for the new joint.

man we should link up one of these days.

either have to be WHITE or (as someone else noted) a country artist....

I don't see either of those two things happening anytime soon....Rissi Palmer was the first black woman to break that country ceiling. She was lauded and acclaimed by some parts. But she never "blew up" on a crossover level...

I think a black woman would have more success with being a country artist who crosses over at THIS point in the game because of the shocking novelty of it all....I truly can't see a NEW black female artist crossing-over today trying to do what Katy P. and Taylor r doing...

U know how they like to do any black artist. There can only be one in each category when it comes to pop ("There's already a Rihanna!!!")

very true...

but that could also be because every female artist that comes out is always tryna chase Beyonce or Rihanna... they can't outperform or outsex either.. but they constantly jump in their lanes..

That's why Nicki scaled so fast and so big. She offered some wholly different.

but there is no new Tracy Chapman or Alicia Keys or someone in that space..

They were always white..

Like there was always a Fiona apple, Jewel, Sara barielles, Ingrid michaelson etc..

That's actually the standard.. Tracy et al are the outliers..

and this is and American problem.. Lianne La Havas is successful in the UK she does mad shows and is seen as a pop singer/songwriter..

Despite catching a brick with her album I think they're going to do that with Tinashe. They put her on that remix with Nick Jonas and have her touring with pop artist Iggy Azalea. Plus, Tinashe already has a pop background.

Next album is going to get a heavy push I believe.

I do think Tinashe is close... I think she could reach like Selena Gomez levels maybe..

imo her acting will be the deciding factor.. if she can tap into an new TV vehicle it could be epic

Whats kinda fucked up about the Iggy tour is at least in LA they don't even mention her name on pop stations.. it's the "Iggy Azalea ft. Nick Jonas tour"..

But when they do giveaways on power they mention her..

which is a lil unfortunate (to me, prob not to her) because I think she was fitting in the lane of having songs for the club (2 On) while coming through w/the very dope album cuts, especially the stuff in the soulection vein (Cold Sweat/Vulnerable were nice as hell)

we certainly could argue she is..

I think that her "image" has crossed over (modelling contracts etc.. ).. I wouldn't be surprised if people could pick her out a line up but couldn't name a record.

my wife was watching her on latifah's show and damn near getting teary eyed (i was cutting onions). they had brought this little black girl on who idolizes her and she was just so overwhelmed with emotion. it was a great moment.

then latifah turns to the camera and is like 'we're going to give this young lady a life time supply of loreal products and remember every time you buy loreal make up you support a little nigglettes dreams.'

me and my wife were like - http://www.reactiongifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/nawww.gif

Something so catchy it can't be denied. That's the biggest thing that has prevented some of the mid level chicks from taking that next leap. Alicia Keys had Falling, Beyonce had Crazy In Love, etc. You need that super catchy song that everyone from little girls to grandma's to white suburban soccer moms can easily sing along too. The way "Adorn" helped elevate Miguel to a higher profile and if he comes with another hit this time around on his third album he could really have some major crossover success.

Of the ones out there I think some of these ladies (with the right catchy song) could have some good crossover success:

Elle Varner
Kandace Springs
Janelle Monae

But looking at my Serato crates....there haven't been many EDM-Pop type of hits in the last few years, that were actually like radio crossover type of hits. Taylor Swift, or even artists who didn't sell nearly as much such as Ariana Grande, haven't really made songs like "Don't stop the music" or "Yeah 3X" lately.

Seeing the charts topped with Uptown funk, Rude, Bang bang, Shake it off, All about that bass, Love me harder, and Jealous....they all have a slight Blackness to them that makes me feel it's possible for a Black woman to make a hit...even though they're way more Pop than what most Black artists tend to record. Most of these songs sound Retro in some type of way as well, even Bang Bang.

A Janelle type of artist may actually have the best shot, because she always makes those left field-retro type of songs...she just hasn't had any that were great or catchy enough to actually become hits.

Yea.. EDM in a generic name form is always possible.. Aloe Blacc & Avicii's Wake Me Up is a pop country song masked as EDM. Clarity was also "EDM" but barely... so those elements are always possible.. and because they work internationally a story could be made overseas before it came here. Would help circumventing Black Radio like Nico & Vinz - Am I Wrong

"Shake It Off" IS a Janelle record. A poppy one but it damn sure is in her wheel house. wouldn't be big if she did it though.

White girls doing 90s R&B is more interesting than black girls doing it (since they already did it in the 90s) So I dunno if any of these ariana, jessie j, nick jonas songs could work if black girls did em. I mean Sevyn Streeter and Jordin Sparks WROTE Ariana's 1st hit. Could Jordin have pulled if off though? as her own single?

I do think Janelle has the ability and positioning... but is she willing to let Bruno & Co. write her one..

There's a reason Lauren Hill will never release another

Its because she was great, and people really like her

Find someone who is actually talented....make a classic,

how do you get it signed?

Lauryn was coming off selling 20+ million records.. She had massive industry good will. Even then Columbia wanted another Fugees album NOT a solo..

You are right though. People need to step away from the Bey, Rih lanes. You will not dethrone them. Just find a new lane..

Timbo is extremely impressed by her and so he should be but do you think that anyone these days really cares about how talented a black female artist is these days?

I mean, she can rhyme well and sing well and is under the wings of a legend but for some reason, I just can't imagine many people caring anymore.

To sort of answer your question, it is my opinion that the black female is going to have to be half-naked in videos and on stage, willing to be consistently derogatory in some way shape or form on at least "some" of her music and she will have to be tied to a well oiled machine in order to cross over.

And as for female rap, it's crazy how we have only been able to have ONE super successful female rapper at a time.

Kim and Fox overlapped for a bit but Nicki is pretty much it for the moment.

That's odd.

imo TInk is the new Ester Dean... I am not sure what she could do to break out in a truly crossover way..

Then again a great song is a great song.. she just has to make one..

Timbo has zero record of success with HIS artists...

Nah...

Ester was a good songwriter....But as a vocalist she was pretty hit or miss...

Tink has that Golden Child feel....That girl can sing AND rhyme her ass off....

I think Tink will be one of those artist that will force the pop world to come to her. Sort of like Kendrick. An artist that is so undeniably good that the "popular crowd" had to check them out....

The industry will certainly try and make her that.. let's just see if the masses believe. I think she'll scale quickly at urban. After that though I dunno..

Yep....Because it's been a while since we've heard a female artist that can sing AND spit since Lauryn...

I'm not at all worried about Tink and her talent...It's the people she is working with that has me worried....

Lauryn sold 20+ million records before people let her do a solo..

Missy had million plus dollar videos to break the "idea" of her

I think Tink's pen is INSANE.. She is a mix of Ms Jade and Nicole Wray/Lil Mo etc...

We will definitely see what will happen this year. Timbo has good will round him cuz of Justin Timberlake 20/20 but he can't pull moves like he did by stealing the Rick Ross/Jay-z verses to make a song and not think blowback is gonna happen.

She may never need to go "pop" though. If people love the songs and stream the shit out of em she can def have a cult following and tour.

think about how much attention stacey dash got for being openly conservative/republican on twitter, without actually even promoting anything

if there was a conservative/republican black girl trolling in interviews with those views, who just made safe/clean pop singer/songwriter music and had some amount of talent, i think it could be a 'thing' in the media with the right push

derivative of any type of soul to survive and crossover in this current era, that I dont think this black woman is even out or around yet.

Soon as the sista do any resemblance of an intricate run or riff..shes going to be 'to soulful' for what the current pop landscape has become.

The black woman that could possibly be 'the one' is right now some 12 year old girl soaking up the current way of pop music and dosen't know any better that it was or could be any other way.

even Nikki hit a brick wall and her pop fanbase got hijacked and replaced by Iggy..

Black Women in the history of music that dosen;t have at least some resemblance of some soul in her shit...

I really do think the essence of black music has been hijacked and and flipped on us..you said it yourself a white woman could sing 90's style R&B and be hailed as the best thing since Hennessy. The Black Woman not so much...she wont even get a mention..

I think Rihanna at her hight, sort of pulled off the robotic/cold thing Im talking about vocally..but even with her it wasn't totally soulless..

That black woman would have to really be on some other other, Venessa Carlton 1000 miles shit to make the pop world and everybody in general be like "What this FUCK is THIS?!?! You dont see this everyday"..to have a CHANCE at maybe hittin with pop...in the hijack era

a hit.

I'm sure there is a certain segment of "spunky", middle/upper middle class, nerdy black young women who want to and could follow that direction.

I'm sure Nikki's got some young black female fans who peeped "starships" success.

Yes.. but not everyone has Ester Dean to write those "spunky" hits.. and Redone to produce em

Charlie XCX kinda fills that spunky void currently and even she is barely "pop" in the Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Gaga, Rihanna way...

things successful or "bourgsie" black folk who post on GD that have a non-black or white slant to it: foods, vacation spots, industries where they work, fashion things, etc.

Music is no different.

There will be some black people who can see the "appeal" of crossover hits like "starships" and Rih-Rih's hits (almost every 3 months there's a "this is the ONLY good Rihanna song/this is my ONLY guilty pleasure Rihanna song" post or reply on GD).

That will never change, no matter how much "black people valuing our own thing" ideals get promoted.

Like one of the things that made Prince's Minneapolis sound was the fact that there was not much black radio in Minneapolis when Prince was coming up so Prince, Jimmy Jam and them got deep into white pop/rock music that they heard on Minneapolis radio.

White/pop music will always have its value, just like it had for Prince and them back then - even if blacks should "love" our own music more (which I'm sure most black people do).

It's time for our own movements, concern for what WE are doing, and forget about what
the white awards ceremonies are doing.
Basically we need to stop caring about white approval AT ALL.
It's killing our music and causing us to deny ourselves, and it's causing us to ignore the
socially conscious music we should be making about the very pertinent ills plaguing our
communities.
