One phrase characterizes James here:
"I wanna get up and do MY thang"

Once he found himself, James never catered his musical approach to white America. He was the Blackest popular
musician America ever saw or will see. White America was just amazed by the talent.
He was infectious and undeniable. He is and will forever be the standard of Black entertainment,
because at a time when everyone else was trying their best to make crossover songs,
James came along and changed music by making it the Blackest way he could.
In order to capture white America, Mike intentionally went after them. He was more of
a Pop Messiah who loathed his Blackness... initially anyway. I don't think any less of Mike
for his approach. He just isn't deserving of the title considering what James did.

vocal performances? all soul.
dancing? all black.

I can think of one mainstream portrayal of egypt that had actual black ppl in it. Mike did that.

Mike's lyrics were fairly militant at times.
The lyrics to black or white and speed demon
convey the same message as they don't care about us.

Yeah I know he had a weave and too many nose jobs
but the idea that he loathed blackness is fairlt ridiculous.

James forsook song structure in favor of relying purely on groove and repetitiveness
To hell with traditional structure... we're gonna go with pure feelings
There was no incorporation of any white american dance styles in his performance
Mike on the other hand... you already know

I know yall cats get mad and think I'm attacking your faves or whatever, but I don't
take anything away from Mike. He's my man and whole 50 grand. Black Messiah he is
not tho. Oh, and I didn't mention anything about his nose jobs. That's all you.

*edit*
You're right about one thing tho, perhaps I shouldn't say that Mike "loathed" his Blackness,
per se... I should say that he was willing to curb it in order to gain further white acceptance,
and he did exactly that. We both know that's what the album Thriller was all about.
He didn't wanna be considered "Black Music" as Off The Wall was classified.

mike was a modern day minstrel performer.
his dancing incorpoprated popping, locking, and the backslide... all were black dances.

I don't see how mike's musical style wasn't black.
even his "rock" songs sound black to my ears.
he's a soul singer, and has been from diana ross presents the jackson 5 to invincible.

I am not taking issue with JB being better than mike.
Thats fine.

I take issue with mike's style (vocaly, dancing, songwriting, everthing really) not being black.

it clearly was.
to my ears, at least. Maybe you hear different.

I'm not saying Mike's style wasn't Black or that his dancing wasn't.
Just that he was willing to be Blacklite for the sake of gaining further acceptance.
I wish I knew that clip where the white guy is dancing all around on some sand dunes,
doing moves that MJ incorporated into his act.
No way one could ever see James as Blacklite. I mean, James released Mother Popcorn
as a single, lol. Payback? Papa Don't Take No Mess. We could go on all day.
All I'm saying is James was pure uncut.

>I don't see how mike's musical style wasn't black.

but I felt that (and I believe I've said it here before), that one of the BLACKEST moments in recorded music was that part right after the Synclavier GONG in "Beat It", with the low "whistling" sound and the drum machine, right before the guitars come in.

there was an organic sort of "street" side to many songs on Thriller, that I think Mike was aiming for with Bad but IMO missed the mark. I don't think gets a lot of press, in that regard... as OTW or Dangerous usually gets those props by virtue of the style of the music on that record.
