"Mark Ronson - Uptown Special Is out anyone hear it?"

I previewed the album on iTunes sounds like I'm gonna cop it later. Not really sure who he has singing on most of the tracks but they do a nice enough job the production is top notch Stevie is on the intro and outro.

It's cool. A little too shiny for me. I'm diggin' the tracks with Kevin Parker though. I was interested to see how those collabs would come out.

but some songs have a modern polish to them.

I do personally think they shoulda used the clean version of the Mystikal track. It really does feel like James Brown cussing on a song.

Love that track "Heavy and Rolling". I am adding it to my Yacht Rock Playlist for sure.

Slightly disappointed there isn't anything nearly as funky as Uptown Funk. I guess Feel Right is but I keep having to skip it as I listen to it at work and in front of the kids.

I get SupaBlak's critique. But you can't be superblack all the time.

Some times you want to hear some James Taylor.

The production is super clean, but I like it. I mean, a lot of the 80s production he's drawing inspiration from is glossy like that. The decade is damn near defined by that. So, it works for me.

The Kevin Parker tracks are highlights but I think my #1 after my first listen is "In Case of Fire". What an absolute gem that is.

Dunn *hates* the lp. Not a huge surprise, but his thoughts are very well-considered - worth a read, even if you like the record.

I follow him to a degree - to a large degree - which is probably why I feel a little dirty enjoying some tracks of the record, lol...

I get the argument about it not being original and that's fair to a degree. Personally, I'm more concerned with whether or not the shit sounds good. That whole diatribe he went on regarding Uptown Funk was just loud and wrong. I mean, that joint is damn near directly influenced by The Time and he mentioned damn near every other funk act he could drum up when that song sounds nothing like P-Funk, Zapp or Tower of Power. Comparing Bruno Mars to Lenny Williams? For real?

Isn't the title track #1 in the country for a few weeks now? If so, not sure that it's popular to hate on Ronson or the lp...

>I get the argument about it not being original and that's
>fair to a degree. Personally, I'm more concerned with whether
>or not the shit sounds good.

At a certain point, doesn't the retro-nostalgia that borders on formulaic become an impediment to a track's good-ness?

That whole diatribe he went on
>regarding Uptown Funk was just loud and wrong. I mean, that
>joint is damn near directly influenced by The Time and he
>mentioned damn near every other funk act he could drum up when
>that song sounds nothing like P-Funk, Zapp or Tower of Power.
>Comparing Bruno Mars to Lenny Williams? For real?
>Dude was just trying too hard to be contrary in this piece.

Everyone seems to have different opinions about what Uptown Funk rips off from, but everyone agrees it's a rip-off, lol. And maybe that's something of a defense for the song and for Ronson's style, something in his corner that demonstrate he's at least doing something akin to collage, not wholesale mimicry. (Personally, it sounds very inspired by The Time and the mpls sound - down to the synth patch dude mentions.)

Ronson is in that borderland for me -- clearly talented guy and often produces great music, but often goes really limp in his fetishization of past sounds. But not always, sometimes it works: I never felt that Winehouse's BtB was just a straight rip-off of Motown, and I loved Rufus Wainwright's record with Ronson... but in both cases, you can hear each artist bend Ronson's sound and vision to their own, I think?

When I go see a popcorn flick, I'm not really expecting originality or Oscar-worthy performances. I'm expecting an overall experience that's entertaining. No more, no less...and that's how I view Ronson's album. It's well-produced. It apes all of the dope ish from my childhood that I love.

Ronson has already shown originality isn't his strong suit and I'm okay with that. He's really adept at producing quality pop music and in this album's case, there are pretty clever lyrics. So, maybe it just boils down to expectations. Like, I wouldn't even think to tear down Ronson's project for lacking creativity, because he's a few albums in and I already know he operates with musical pastiches.

I see your point regarding Winehouse and Wainwright. They're definitely artists who have a strong musical personality. So, Ronson was able to bring in the pastiches without them overshadowing the artists.

Jesus.

I mean, the originality sentiment is not lost on me. But uhhhh...the vitriol is pretty over the top.

No idea's original. People been building off the past forever now. And ironically, the dude he quoted made his statements in 1971, like he said...so people like Dunn have been there to bitch about unoriginal artists forever now, too. Yet he simultaneously references a bunch of artists from that time period, praising their originality (and rightfully so).

In other words, every era has its original artists. Every era has its throwback artists. Every era has its blatant ripoffs. Everyone has their place. Dunn's anger, on the other hand, is misplaced and unnecessary.
