Caribou, aka Dan Snaith, has put together "The Longest Mixtape," a collection of 1000 songs important to him. You can check it out below. (Because of YouTube's coding, only 200 of the tracks are cycled in the embed—you'll have to click through for the full 1000.) It includes tracks from Kanye West, Arthur Russell, Madvillain, the Zombies, Pusha T, Wire, Missy Elliott... and too many others to list.
He also wrote a note about how he put the collection together, and how it's meant to be heard:

The last few years of my life have been incredible, thanks in large part to all of you - so I've been thinking of how to say thank you.
As you can imagine, music has been a central love of my life since I was a teenager and over the years I've been introduced to a lot that has stayed with me. I've collected the majority of that music here – and I thought sharing it with you seemed like one way I could say thanks.

I'm sure some things are under-represented or over-represented, but roughly speaking this is a musical history of my life. Of course a lot of this music has come to me through my friends - thank you to Koushik, Kieran, Jeremy, Gary, Brandon, Jason, Sam, Ketan, Ryan, Toby and many others...
Also, please share music with me that you think I would like but is not included here, in the hope this becomes a dialogue rather than a monologue.

I suggest you listen to this on shuffle as I made no attempt to sequence these tracks - I just entered them as I browsed along the shelves in my record collection. If you see dead links or duplicate songs please tweet me @caribouband.

semantics!

i think it's cool that the barrier between artists and fans has become so permeable that fans can hook directly into artists' influences via something like this and not have to sift through interviews looking for mentions of music they like. more artists should do something like this. i'm pretty sure some make (or used to make) spotify playlists in this vein but doing it on youtube opens it up to everyone (for the time being...)

there is some good stuff on this list. it's worth browsing through. a lot of it is hip hop and pretty good hip hop at that. i'm consistently surprised at how much rap is on playlists and mixes from 30+ white males that don't make rap music even though it makes total sense when i take 10 seconds to actually think about it

...he gets the thumbs up for demon fuzz "disillusioned man" being in there
