"Q's Back on the Block turns 25: Can a record like that be made today??"

Is there someone like Q that can bring together artists from the past, present and future for a project like that?

In response to Reply # 5

I say kinda/sorta because take uptown funk for example, q would have pulled past (jam/lewis or monte moir to do the synths) with present (Bruno Mars)
Maybe that's what he's doing but im not too familiar with the project to know
I think DJ Cassidy tried it ( mixing past ,present and future) on his new record.

that list isn't meant to be exhaustive or exclusive.

but i think those 3 could do it b/c they get respect from enough old schoolers (? worked w/Al Green on an album, Rick worked w/Johnny Cash, Nile is Nile Rodgers) and new jacks (Nile worked w/Daft Punk and Pharrell, Rick his Hip-Hop royalty, ? is ?) that they could cobble together a project similar to Back on the Block.

fuck you.

I can see ?uest doing something like that once the tonight show/roots thing dies down
Rick or Nile can do something like that right now

Now on to Mj missing from that record and garden in particular....I thought it was because mj didn't want to outshine q and the others on his project so he didn't participate. I think that's I what I remember hearing.

Anyone have the 411 on this? Jay??

Maybe that's why he's not on it. But his absence looms large over the whole project, IMO. His non-appearance is a distraction. Still, I get it if that was his reasoning.

to have been able to participate in the project for WB if he'd so chosen.

but maybe i'm wrong about that.

also, his Bad Tour obligations could've kept him so busy he 'didn't have time' to participate in the recording. but even that feels flimsy as i posit it - b/c i doubt that MJ couldn't have made time to record a part on 'Secret Garden' if he'd wanted to.

fuck you.

Let TTD tell it of course
I'm going with MJ wanting complete control of his music and thinking Q was just a dude who had great music connections and was musically out of touch.
Which is funny within itself considering the folks he had on that project.
I think he pissed Q off by thinking that he didn't deserve to be recognized as a major contribution to MJ's success.
There was a fallout which explains his absence from the juke joint project as well.

When Dangerous was being done, Michael wouldn't release it until he played it for Q and got his cosign

Another factor could also be Michael doing his disappearing acts between projects

beyond hip-hop.... maybe "Black rock"

That's the reason he split from Def Jam in the first place, because Russell started signing R&B singers and different kinds of acts like that.

i've heard MJ was supposed to sing on 'Secret Garden' but didn't. apparently he'd have sang the Al B. Sure part (though i think he'd have been better suited for the El Debarge part). at the time i was mad @ homeboy b/c i assumed he didn't appear b/c he didn't want to. i was certain Sony didn't block his appearance b/c back then MJ had enough juice that if he'd wanted to appear on the album he could've. he appeared in the documentary but only audio, no video. which was weird.

did MJ pull out b/c he fell out w/Quincy? what's up?

fuck you.

And even if it's not as good, I felt it was a GREAT album. It was literally the ONLY, only, only album that me and my parents all enjoyed the same. They hated all my music, and I only halfway liked what they listened to at that time.

I understand that it's impossible to enjoy it the same way 25 years later...and that late 80's, somewhat NJS era is extremely hard to get into if you weren't there for it....but yeah. I still love what he does on there, and I can see it being the beginning of adult artists saying "Rap might be here for a while...or forever." But it's hilarious hearing Ice T rap about gangbangin on a super happy ass colorful "A different world" era beat.

QJJ to me is just ridiculous. And the Raps on there sound a bit silly now, but still fit. You put a move on my heart...man. Slow jams???? Maaaaaan. Heaven's girl, where he almost trolled us by getting Charlie, Aaron, and Kellz on one track, knowing they all came from the same Stevie tree.

I always loved it..thought it was great
But when i listened to it this week and read the credits, it was like damn..there's some historical stuff that happened on this record. It was also a changing of the guard. Not many could or can pull it off like he did. I think Jam and Lewis could do it.

But that could have changed the course for Tevin

Yeah I heard they were doing something like that...getting the artists that they've worked with for the project. Now you know what would take that project over the top..and we all know he wouldn't be down for it.

32. "Setembro appreciation"

Man I was 11 when I got my first Walkman. I was able to use my allowance to buy my own little tapes as well as listen to my moms old tapes on my own time.

At some point i discovered her BOTB tape and Setembro was like, the sexiest song I had ever heard. I mean I knew very little about sex but knew this song was sexy. Played the hell out of it.

matter of fact i got tired of that from Quincy because alot of these rap albums, R&B albums, pop albums been nothing but colab Projects, etc..

quincy always was doing those things with projects and it worked.

MJ was tired of him and felt he was getting too much credit and wanted to distance himself from him.

it worked for AL B Sure on secret garden.bought him some crediblity for a minute.

mark ronson is the hottest name out here and he can pull it off.

but he has to have the right acts. Nile Rodgers would Produce but he wouldn't generate that kind of group vibe.

though right now Rodgers shows that Chic SOund and vibe never goes out of style.

back on the block was corn ball New Jack Swing, however it worked with having ray charles and chaka on a familiar hit and a young unknown talent in tevin campbell on a cover song.

says alot about those brothers johnson songs which were two of the hits besides secret garden.

secret garden became the standard of the group male R&B acts who never had worked together before as a song.

gotta have a balance and timing.

however Back on the block was chucky cheese cheese IMO.
