The album was released in 93. Havoc and Prodigy were both born in 94.
No way they were 14-15 during the Juvenile Hell era. Maybe 17-18

That would probably make them like 17 or 18 if it was recorded sometime in 92. I mean 17 or 18 is still essentially a kid to most people.

If I remember correctly, Primo said in an interview that this was a beat made in the 90s that he'd saved for Nas, a la how "Run" was an old RZA beat that he gave to Ghost in the 2000s. This goes against Primo's claim that he makes all his beats specifically for certain projects though, so I may be wrong.

Chris Rock is a serious Hip Hop head.

?uest is upset The Roots couldn't clear the air with Biggie before he passed. he wrote an op-ed for The Source explaining the 'What They Do' video, but it was finished the day before Big was shot.

Chris' fav producer is the Dr. Dre+Yella duo, Ciph: also Dre, Rosenberg: Preem, ?uest: Dilla (surprise)

Chris likes Dilla but doesn't consider him a great since he doesn't have hits and is only big "in 9 blocks in Brooklyn"

New Jack City was the starting point of celebrities getting paid to visit clubs.

Chris thinks Kanye's 'Fantasy' album is one of the best records of the last 50 years (any genre, apparently)

this was a great listen.

Op-ed? I find it hard to believe they could get to Big directly through somebody like Q-Tip if they earnestly wanted to talk to him. Why write an op-ed when you could ask Tip to get the two of you on the phone? Seems weird.

>Chris likes Dilla but doesn't consider him a great since he
>doesn't have hits and is only big "in 9 blocks in Brooklyn"

The Light, Runnin' and Didn't Cha Know are hits, though. Maybe he means Dilla "doesn't have hits that Chris Rock knows he produced"? Or he has an obscenely high bar for how he defines "hits"?

The Light is maaaybe the only song that could be considered a Jay Dee hit.
Didn't Cha Know wasn't hip hop, so I don't think that counts.
And Runnin'? Was that a hit in '1997? Popular yes, but a hit? I don't think so.

Rock was saying how he watched Al's whole demeanor and life pretty much crumble in front of him as they were listening to the tape.

Whereas someone else (say Kells for instance) would instantly be like "fuck that! I'm going back to the lab, come up with some hotter shit than this!"

Just googled and found out Prince Be had a stroke in 2005 that left him paralyzed on the left side.

Chris Rock & Questlove need their own podcast together

quest saying "Cipha still has feelings" about Hip Hop was cringeworthy, but he did great for the most part

when Chris Rock said "Can we go back to discussing Dilla?" treading into Bill Cosby territory, that was comedy gold

and "the 76ers might suck but they're still basketball players" in defense of bad comedians was poignant

In response to Reply # 0

The blame is on both sides.

1. Quest tells great stories, but he goes ALLL the way around the block to get there. You ask the group..."Who is your favorite producer?

Rosenberg: DJ Premier.
Rock: Dr. Dre
Quest: See, it started in a basement in Detroit...

I love those stories, but I think they work better in a documentary.
Or maybe just not THIS particular podcast.

2. Rosenberg in his mind is trying to keep the interview moving, so if there's a pause in Quest's story, he jumps in and takes the wheel. I wish he'd give his guests on all of his shows room to breathe.

For instance, the track that had Chris Rock on it felt like filler to me and didn't feel like classic material to me. I didn't care enough about his relationship with Amber Rose at the time to care about him venting about her. I'm certain I would like the track less now since the relationship is old news.

Yeah, his memory was pretty good. Seemed like he was able to pull the names so effortlessly, which is impressive since he's not involved with the music business to the extent the other folks on the podcast are.

"yeezus" is my second fav. you hated "yeezus," huh? haha! yeah, i can totally get how it isn't everyone's cup o tea. but i love that album.

MBDTF is right behind that.

It's a great album, but I don't think it's as perfect as people make it out to be. I didn't love Ye's verses on the posse cuts, felt overproduced at times, and there were a couple songs I'd do without. Still one of the best records to come out over the past several years, though. I like Graduation, College Dropout and Late Registration more

The guy has fans routinely telling him to stop cutting people off and he still does it, fully aware of what he's doing. I love that podcast and listen to it every week, but that gets pretty annoying after hundreds of episodes.

Spending the time and energy to do a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly podcast is asking a bit much. As much as I'd like to hear ?uest tell his various stories or even speak his opinion on the current music scene with different guests, I don't think it's likely to happen anytime soon.

Fuck anybody with a 'Hits or it doesn't matter' mentality. They're more into the "story" and hype/ excitement around something, rather than the actual thing itself, whether it's a piece of art or a product. They're the reason everything sucks.

You can be underrated and not have hits but to be the absolute BEST and you're in the league and not hit one or two out the park? I don't know. I think that says something. You can be great but greatest...nah. Not when the other greats have hits. Michael Jackson aint Michael Jackson without Thriller. He was already great but THRILLER made him the greatest.

It all depends on the genre of music...A musical form like jazz is not so dependent on "hits"......U can be the biggest "jazz based" act of all time in terms of commercial sales (Kenny G) and still be viewed as a joke...

However, when you are dealing with "pop" music, hits matter...

Of course influence trumps ALL that....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

"hits" only measures popularity & is subject to many elements only a very small part of which is the artistic merit of the piece

they may matter to folks like Rock & ?uest who live in that particular world of upper class privelege they've attained (not to say they don't deserve it), they may matter to the follower masses but they have little to no bearing on artistic value, in fact hits tend to have immensely less artistic value than more advanced & original work

it was good

but you're gonna have to forgive me for being smart enough to see what "class" of people Chris & Amir are a part of

they've reached elite level, priveleged kids, big houses & tons of money & they know it & celebrate it

they, like most, also feel entitled to their status bc of the hard work they've done & while i respect that it doesn't mean I'm unaware dudes like them are out of touch w/ the daily struggles of the vast majority of this country

but i get that Blackmen from the hip-hop generation are usually accepted as being able to speak for "the people" no matter how far their daily existence is inevitably removed from that by their wealth & fame

now in regards to "hits matter", quest can protest as much as he likes he's proven time & again he is beholden to the idols of the popular culture, be it Jay Z or Obama, his politics have always been measured by a healthy love of what is "hot"

his position is precarious bc he has to back even the wackest of hot artists as part of his job

it's why his "manifesto" (the promo articles for ATYSC) rang empty bc he talks all that but he'll never call out anyone specific except easy targets he can softly dis after texting them to explain context

You can drop a great record, have a good record company, but then that label's distributor goes out of business the week after your record comes out. Maybe 10 years later, some DJ could re-discover your record and break it to a new audience and it'll be massive. But if the last part of the story didn't happen, is it not a great record?

I definitely consider "hits" the last thing I think of when evaluating an artist, mainly because whether a record does well commercially is affected by so many factors outside of just making art.

I value quality.

Whether or not the "masses" like it is irrelevant to me. The power of marketing and group think can not be ignored. Bullshit always wins in America. Whoever has the biggest bank and the best timing is what it comes down to, mostly.

I'm not even a Dilla fan but that whole "The cream rises to the top" shit is BS.

It's good. Really good. But, nowhere near GOAT status for hip hop much less ALL GENRES. Rock trolling.

Now I gotta go back and listen to Graduation, which I think I like better.

I, too, was super annoyed with how ?uest kept getting cut off.

My apologies for not providing a link, but I beg folks to please check out another podcast, Bill Burr's Monday Morning Podcast. The episode in question I want folks to check out is dated 12/01/2014. At about the 23 minute mark, he gives a brief opinion on Biggie vs. Tupac. Hilarious stuff.

I would give a link, but I can't since I'm at work. My apologies.
