"PSA: throwback records ain't new. "
Mon Nov-24-14 10:20 AM by Joe Corn Mo

smokey's "ohh baby baby" was a throwback to do wop.
so is the stylistics: "stone in love with you," i think.

wham! "wake me up before you go-go" is a throwback
to big band swing music with a dash of Motown.

Aretha's: "freeway of love" is also a Motown throwback.

Miles Davis criticized Wynton Marsellis for doing throwback records.

maybe throwback records are more common nowadays,
but i seriously doubt it.

every era, i think, had songs on the charts
that were designed to remind listeners of previous eras.

green day's early career was supposed to remind you of husker du.

what i'm saying is, complaints about throwbacks
may be another version of old ppl ranting about young ppl doing stuff
that has always been done.

if not outright fetishism...

and yes, that includes Prince. he may have been doing it with Oberheims and Dat 'Lectric Grand and shit but some of those songs give me a wild "sock hop" vibe

and that's golden era prince.

>he's made throwback records that sound like his old records.

and one of my favorites (that didn't make it to an album) was the remix of "Rock and Roll Love Affair". That sounded up like some '79-80 disco-rock Prince.

This was my argument about the Mark Ronson recs etc.. you stuffy an era so long that you want to capture the feeling those records give/gave you.

If you are a musician and you hone your chops on a certain type of music.. It's always gonna be contained in your current output.. it's just a range of how much nostalgia you want to put in it.

the shitty guitar riff to "black or white" is also supposed to make us
think about music released before the 90s.

and i didn't even touch on his dancing and his videos,
which intentionally gives nods to almost every era of popular entertainment.

and really, in terms of me posting like a know it all,
you certainly have no room to talk.

like, none at all.
