pretty sure i've claimed this on here before. it's worth re-iterating.
believe it or not, this was a pretty big club/party record in it's day. the proto-jiggy beat, the infectious ease of the hook + the r&b singing made it somewhat of a crossover hit.
enter: alcohol, and this pretty much becomes one of the most infectious rap songs ever made.
sure, there were big crossover club records explicitly ABOUT drinking in the 1990's like "gin & juice" or dj quik's "tonite"... there were nightclub staples about drinking like the alkaholiks - "likwit" or "only when i'm drunk".
but does that necessarily make them FUN records to hear when you're actually drunk?
"where my homiez?" succeeds in application. this record is intended as an anthem. not a song. al skratch's shout delivery plays perfectly to a rowdy dude who's one away from one too many... (he probably was drunk when he recorded it) the subject matter? who isn't especially fond of their friends when they're drinking? the song also has multiple parts worth yelling along with (beside the hook) preferably while fucked up: "WHERE THEY AT!! WHERE THEY AT!! -- WE OVER HERE, G!!"
the energy of this song lends itself to being drunk similar to the energy of chopped and screwed lending itself to drinking cough syrup or whatever they do down there for fun. you can almost smell the liquor on the breath of ill al skratch coming through the speaker. if this isn't the greatest 1990's rap drinking anthem please name one better below and i'll either disagree with you or if i don't feel like disagreeing; thank you for replying.
