but can this truly be considered a "sell out" attempt if Kobe never made any "hardcore" rap before this?

Or is this just counting as a general cashgrab (look! NBA player raps!)

Shaq was the only one to pull that off

That was when Interscope spent 3 million on Nicole, Eve and Will.I.Am's albums....only Will's dropped...and then everyone in the building got fired because of it.

Personally I thought the song w/T.I. was dope. Polow Da Don's run is kinda underrated IMO

sounded too thirsty for commercial acceptance. Never could really get into "Jewelz". I remember him getting interviewed on Video Music Box looking like he was about to cry cuz his "Word Life" album didn't move that many units. Right then and there I knew "I'd rather be broke and have a whole lot of respect" was some bullshit.

Women I know loved that song because the vibe was mellow, but O was rapping his ass off on that record and the content didn't switch. He was saying the things he's always said over a more melodic backdrop than usual, which is probably where the feeling comes from since he usually favors melodic production to start with.

That song came out in the late spring/early summer, perfect song for that time of year. And like I said, his technique and lyricism was in top form. It's an empty gripe, in my opinion.

I don't think he totally did some super blatant pop attempt with it, but like I said, it felt like a reach to me. I don't see how its formula is that much different from the Bad Boy-familiar loop, sung chorus with interpolated lyrics template. I mean, that hook is terribly cheesy. And when I heard it in conjunction with the beat I was left thinking "Is he really trying to get over with a Tevin Campbell (Quincy Jones) song??". Plus his flow is stunted as hell on it. As someone who championed Word...Life and had been looking forward to his follow-up for years, the way he was rhyming on there was an obvious, likely intentional regression in delivery and wordplay. To my ears, it sounded like he may have even freestyled most of it. And then you combine it with this Fugee-La esque looking video in the islands, where's it's part him being chased while riding a motorcycle, part performance shots with him in linen with mad chains on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FNWC2651NI

It definitely came off like he (and likely Mic G) saw rap peers from NY like Nas and Jay-Z especially come up and make that transition; and he wanted to try his hand at it. And I believe his second verse on Respect Mine from Soul Survivor addresses it:

Since day one when I came upon the scene
For this mic I fiend, respect played a part before the cream
I figure respect last longer because cream come and go
I done seen five to ten and even fifteen a show and blew it
Now I know that my ill escape is real estate
No more will I make that mistake
Respect is what matters cause that shit hold weight

Broadening the appeal does not = "selling out."

Guys, we solved this problem almost 20 years ago.

Grow the fuck up.

This isn't within light years of "selling out."

There is no artistic compromise. There is no dumbing
anything down. There is no change of essential formula.

Its OC, just like we knew him, spitting over a beat that
your girlfriend would like.

That isn't "selling out."

Biggie and Puff pretty much set it off- Big Poppa, One More Chance, Get Money, Players Anthem, Crush on You, Hypnotize
Fugees- Fu-gee-la
Nas- If I ruled the world
Jay- Ain't no nigga

melodic hooks, recognizable samples, and feel good rhymes: it's a hit!

These were the songs that got girls HYPE, like they would stampede everyone in the club on the way to the floor

Someone mentioned Mic Geronimo, one of the worst attempts I ever heard

O.C. wasn't as blatant, but there were definitely elements. And girls dug it, but wasn't stomping you out to get to the floor like the ones above. They were more like "it's cool" while dudes were like "O is ill, but fuck that yvette michelle hook"

.....that being said, a song like O.C.'s "far from yours" is an example of a GREAT song that can also be labeled as the artists "sell out" or "trying to get airplay" attempt

You notice A LOT of artists that talked against selling out, actually had their share of sellout type songs...i think OP is looking for BAD sellout songs, where the artist would have been better off sticking to their hardcore stuff rather than trying and flopping with a radio track.. Mic Geronimo is a great example of this.. Big Daddy Kane with the mess that was his "Prince of Darkness" album is another...

Not every rap song with someone singing on it means it's their sellout or commercial song, I will admit he was going for radio play with that song but mane O.C. was rhyming like he usually did, if any it was a song for & about the hood chicks who listen to rap not pop radio.

Another song I like that is that same level is Group Home's "Suspended In Time" the original is hard but Premier made a smoother version with Amel Larrieux on the hook, yeah it was for the radio but the lyrics are still hoodish an not a sell out track by any means.

It surely wasn't an attempt to go full on "Jiggy" at all. Kept the Boom Bap feel, but was more melodic, and had a girl singing kinda dry on the hook...so it was an attempt to cross over, but wasn't blatant.

Not an egregious "shiny suit" level reach, but a formulaic one nonetheless. I said my peace in post #33, but I understand that folks are real sensitive about O.C. on here.

something about George Clinton saying "let's stop playing around and do this shit for real."

So they sought to do a record that was just pure r&b.

i can't find the liner notes online though. so i dunno.

In response to Reply # 37

that Cosmic Slop happened because George decided that they had to start selling some records and as such, the records had to sound "blacker" and "slicker."

Some of the guys in the band were not cool with it... they said they liked the fucked up mixing of the previous albums and they wanted all the feedback and the "airplanes and bombs."

George said "We gotta get on black radio... and with this rock shit we're doing, we're not on black radio OR white radio. White radio ain't gonna play us no matter how hard we rock, so we gotta go black."

(This has been documented in a number of books and interviews about P-Funk)

i think you're being slightly dishonest with the response you just described.

song debuted at #40 just a couple weeks ago and has been dropping since...

video went online 2 weeks ago and hasn't even broken 4 million views in 2 weeks.

the response from the internet has been extremely mixed to negative.

simply put: it's not the commercial success it was obviously drafted to be.

i won't be surprised if it's an "bonus track" or something to save face.

Without the context of the narrative of the album, the song is a watered down product.

I felt the same way as they did about the song too when it was released - that the song was of lesser quality as the music on Good Kid, m.A.A.d City. But the single did keep his name in the public's mind and also allowed him to reach new fans that didn't catch his music from his first album.

it got heavy rotation for months and charted fairly high on billboard.

"nastradamus" went platinum partly due to the success of that single.

i think you could make the argument something like "bridging the gap", "hero", "cherry wine" were more unsuccessful attempts at making something "pop."...

it sucked even as a commercial song.

"U owe me" was actually a great radio/club/trendy record. Even today, it still bangs a little bit on that vibe. It just wasn't Nas at all...woulda been suited better for Luda or somebody.

But those tracks gave B.O.B a career?

I mean what IF Lupe kept.. Nothing on You, Airplanes and Just the Way You Are..

B.O.B would've been dropped. He was already at Atlantic at that point for almost 4 years.

I think ultimately when the songs are bigger than the artist and you don't constantly hit them with smashes you end up losing steam.

so you should actually say "strange clouds" is the failed attempt at selling out

In the short term it was great for B.o.B.

Long term, however, it's been harmful. He's struggling for relevancy at this point IMO. DJ Mustard is pretty much keeping him afloat right now.

Like we can't assume that talent would've simply just "worked" w/o a deal or smashes

You are correct, I saw him (and his horrible stage show back then)
coming up in the Atlanta scene and it was no way he was gonna make
noise with the post Goodie Mob sound he had (though it was cool for
what it was) mixed with the occasional mediocre cruck anthem like
"Haterz Everywhere" lol.

75. ""Waiting for the Dj could become a new catch phrase" - Talib"
In response to Reply # 62

The full quote:

“Waiting for the DJ could become a new catch phrase. You know when someone asks you what’s up, or watcha doin', instead of just chillin', you could say "Waitin for the DJ.” Because truthfully party people, if you are just chillin', all you really doing is waiting for the DJ to rock your body.

I was cringing so hard when I read that back in the day. SMH. I actually liked the song, but based on what he was hoping for? Yeah, it failed.

To me Redman has never really been the type to make a club track (unless it's with Method Man) but you know the label made him do that song, a very bad party club joint...I still skip this song on the album.

People have no clue what sellin out is.

People are naming songs simply because they had singing on the hook. LOL

>People have no clue what sellin out is.

Actually you have no clue. "Selling out" in the context of this post I take to mean an artist deviating from their "normal" sound/style, and attempting to cater to a larger audience. Which is fine if done right. But 9x out of 10, it falls flat.

Also, you have to to consider the climate. For example, during the early-mid 90s, there was still a stark divide between an underground act vs a mainstream one. So it was more noticeable when an established act was trying to swing the fence.

Its not that simple. the singing would actually be a welcomed bonus if done well. Unfornately a lot of the songs listed in this post contained a gang of contrived & uneccesary crooning and half ass hooks. I mean, no one I know has ever criticized Mos' "Ms Fat Booty" or Kweli's "Get By." these are examples of undeground acts swinging the fence quite well.

The attempt to "sell out" is even more evident when the video for said song is released, and it contains all the requisite cliches: club scene, half nekkid chix, fancy whips, etc. This is especially funny when you consider said artist's previous work and their rigid stance against commercialism:

"I rather be broke and have a whole lot of respect" and "Fuck a platium plaque, all I want is a nigga's dap" comes to mind.. LOL

Fuck the context of this post. Selling out is selling out.

What did OC say on Far From Yours that went against what he believes in.

Selling out is doing something that goes against your morals and values for cash.

Some of these songs are not that...AT ALL

You're allowing your perception of what you believe to be "real" or "fake" qualify as selling out.

Selling out is allowing Nike to use Revolution for a fucking shoe add...which is why McCartney was pissed.

You just claimed Dangerous was "selling out" my man. A song in which OC clearly says;
"When I rock it feel like you bein fucked
On all fours, this ain't meant for the stores
This is for the n*gg*s in the clubs with thug mugs"

That beat is some pure uncut raw hip-hop and because you think it has a more club friendly feel you're trying to label it as selling out. Those dudes were probably in clubs all the time and made a club joint the way they wanted to make a club joint. How is that selling out? Because you don't think hip-hop is about rocking the club?

You couldn't be more wrong.

I bet someone is going to bring up Gang Starr's Royalty next.

Because that song sounds exactly like a Gangstarr record should. It has a signature (hard) Premier beat, scratches, and it's standard Guru fare from a topical standpoint. They made K-Ci and Jojo work within the Gangstarr framework. That song wasn't their attempt at making B.I.G./Jigga/NaS-lite radio record.

I'm saying that based on the train of thought in this thread, I wouldn't be surprised if someone mentioned it just because it had singing on the hook.

It was a wrap for hip hop's integrity when he touted Puff as the way for hip hop to go.

Or do you mean that the songs were successful even though the content of song seemed like it was out of left-field for the MC?

Nah...I mean, selling-out means that an artist/or group does something COMPLETELY out of their comfort zone in order to move units or gain a new level of popularity...

When u see Doug E. Fresh putting on MC Hammer pants because Hammer was like, "Dog....just do what I do...u will go platinum...trust..." then that's selling out...lol

Having a singer on your song or a melodic groove does not simply constitute selling-out. And a lot of the songs I read in this post kinda point that way....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

The song was so out of place on the album. And then Redman's verse was just too much. I love Redman, but that was NOT a good match.
