So true. Jay-Z listens to everything. A lot of rappers DO study their craft and music. You'd never know......but yeah. This was a good watch. I remember the episode when Rza was on and Snoop was talking about how he and his boys were listening to Wu even during that whole East Coast/West Coast divide.

It's where underground rappers have fans who literally hate ANYTHING commercial...but a lot of them actually love commercial artists. I remember Talib and his wife telling me that he was a for real Gucci Mane fan, which is why they worked together.

Cats like Lil Jon, Tyga and Lil Wayne have taste that goes way beyond what most fans would think, as well.

esp. ones of a certain age like Snoop. The dude covered a hip-hop classic on his first solo album. all those dudes came up on was "classic hip hop", lol

but I remember years back reading an interview with some backpack rapper. And he told a story about how he doesn't understand fans' interpretation of his music and opinions on popular music, as one fan had recently stepped to him and was like "yo I love your music....and I hate JayZ too!" and this rapper was basically like "what the hell are you talking about I love JayZ....."

This just goes back to fans who like to segregate the different types of hip hop and sit up in their bedroom thinking that their favorite rapper feels the same.

And it happens on both levels, commercial and underground.

I find it hard for anyone to spend their life working on music and not have delved outside of their immediate peer group.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

considering his age, and his pre-"trap rap" history
but that's just me

I lived in the South in the '90s
and cats were HEEEEEEEEEEEEEAVY on the "real hip-hop"
heavy.

I almost wondered if it was just my time/area. One of my dudes (he posts here) was on the same shit. The one rap record that came from our area in that time was kind of like some 99th generation East Coast rap.

watching some MTV special on Snoop's top 25-50 videos of all time. The majority of Snoop's favorite videos were from BDP/KrsOne, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, etc. I mean, the Slick Rick influence should be extremely obvious.

Also, its seems like a 'only on okayplayer' type of deal that Gangstarr is considered backpack rap.

Like if you are 35+ and have been listening to hip-hop almost all your life, then your knowledge would be deep right?

Like I don't consider myself as deep in hip-hop like some lesson heads but I know all the stuff Snoop is referencing.

oh wait, I forgot Too Short isn't 'hard core hip-hop head' music and Snoop fucking Dogg one of the longest tenured and iconic MC's in the history of the genre couldn't know what Come Clean sounds like.

Snoop is better versed in not just hip-hop but soul, funk, rock, jazz, r&b, etc than your favorite rapper.

you ever heard him talk about soul music? He can name you artists, where they're from, obscure songs of theirs...etc. he's a true fan of music...hiphop especially. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

about other artists, especially when it comes to those that don't play the game. Funny thing is that it usually isn't the case
