I'm not sure if OKP is up on this kid but he's had one of the most remarkable runs in rap for a kid so young. Now he's signed to Visionary Music Group (Logic's label) and has put out at least three free album-quality projects and I think he's nailed it the best with his latest, Searching Sylvan.

Like Logic, he's pretty open about what's happened in his life and doesn't shy away from telling it all. Dude was working as a janitor and had to move back with his mother before VMG put him on.

The project Searching Syvlan can be downloaded here: http://www.searchingsylvan.com/ -- I suggest going to the Table Of Contents section and reading the story behind every song when you click on the artwork.

Now, I've liked just about all his work. This newest one and The Reason: A Defense Mechanism (http://www.datpiff.com/QuESt-The-Reason-A-Defense-Mechanism-mixtape.187847.html) -- this is hard to find elsewhere. If you just wannna stream it, check this: https://soundcloud.com/curatedcrates/sets/quest-the-reason-a-defense-mechanism

I didn't like his previous project Fear Not Failure at first because it was so different from The Reason but I even dig that one: http://www.hotnewhiphop.com/quest-fl-fear-not-failure-mixtape.50269.html -- it's a slow burner.

The How Thoughtful Mixtape was a banger: http://indy.livemixtapes.com/mixtapes/11328/quest_how_thoughtful.html

The first tape I heard of his was this one: http://2dopeboyz.com/2009/03/02/quest-distant-travels-into-soul-theory-mixtape/ -- and he pulled it the hell off when he was still in his teens.

Anyway, he's got a shit load of music out. Check it out.

haven't listened to a single thing since, though. been collecting it but haven't found the time.

I think if you do go back, start with The Reason: A Defense Mechanism. I think it's his post work post-Soul Theory (which was amazing for what it was).

he has all of the ingredients. flow, lyrics, and most importantly song composition

He had a potential deal with Atlantic but that didn't work. If Logic does well enough, maybe they'll give him a bigger shot.

As it stands tho, John Q is really one of the top dudes out.

I even like Fear Not Failure and it's a huge departure sonically than The Reason: A Defense Mechanism.

For me, Searching Sylvan and The Reason: A Defense Mechanism are his top waves.
