The stream to his album floated across my twitter timeline.
After a quick Wikipedia search this kid's rise is pretty remarkable. He released 4 mix tapes before this debut album. He got signed to Def Jam after like the 2nd or 3rd mixtape. He's been on a number of tours including one or two overseas.
NO ID exec produced the debut album, Under Pressure. He's got 2 S1 joints. He's doing the Midnight Marauders woman robot voice thing on a bunch of songs.
The kid can rap but I must be getting old because today is the first day I've ever heard of "Logic." Clicked the link to the stream because the tweet said DEF JAM debut. I was surprised to read a DEF JAM release by someone named LOGIC. Lets be honest, LOGIC is a Post Soundbombing era underground emcee name. I didn't expect a mixed 24 year old rapper that looks like he graduated from college recently.
Anyways, like I said, kid can RAP. He's got a number of different flows. Most of the production comes from his in house crew it looks like.
He's got a double time midwest flow as well that he uses a lot ala Bone Thugs. I guess Drake is the new standard now, up and coming rappers are all definitely influenced by him.
Still can't believe a Def Jam debut was released and I had NEVER heard of the guy.
I guess I don't listen to a lot of new rap these days, I'm not actively searching for it. I'm actively searching for different genres - NEW rap artists aren't at the top of that list anymore.
Anybody else feel like they're in a similar situation when it comes to listening to music?

I don't even try to stay on top of shit anymore. There's so much of it out, if shit's that good, eventually, I'll get to it.
Anyway, I'd heard Logic a few years ago. An employee put me onto him. I used to listen to his Young Sinatra mixtapes at work. I didn't know that he put an album out, though. I'll have to look into it.
He did that Michael Franks sample/Fabulous beat right, by the way.

and still pull off a decent album.
However, the degree which "Under Pressure" bites "Sing About Me / Dying of Thirst" is nauseating.
I admit, dude can rap. I admit, this album is catchy. But there is NOTHING new about this release. And I don't think you're alone in thinking that this guy sprung up out of nowhere, he seems like a product of Def Jam, too pampered to be legit.

Sonically, lyrically, etc. If a listener was in a bubble, and never heard the styles he's jacking, this would do really well. Def Jam has a pretty nasty history of making knock-off artists and presenting them to a wider (and whiter) audience, and reaping the reward of faux-originality.
the response was/is people incessantly harkening back to more culturally "vibrant", "free" times - even if they weren't actually alive to experience/remember them.

its not the worst thing to bite. its only a narration. when does paying tribute being biting? the souls of mischief album iirc has a similar narration at various points through it.
There's nothing wrong with this musically- the production is solid and the kid can rap. But he's so obviously derivative of Kendrick and Drake that I can't take him seriously.

Shit had me dying.
That said, the dude is really one of the nicest, most down-to-earth people you'll ever meet and the album isn't bad at all. In fact, it's kind of entertaining and I'm not up on his mixtape stuff.

i dont check that much for the newest, underground mixtape/soundcloud/youtube rap anymore. i kinda wait til i know a bit more about them. in my teens/early 20s, it would have been different. maybe its my age, maybe its the changes in rap, i dont know. but yeah, i feel out the loop sometimes. i only heard about logic this week too.
24. "His album is nothing special... but I can't stop playing it for some rea..." In response to Reply # 0
His flow's not unique. His beat selection isn't the best. His content is aight to average at best.
However, I can't stop playing his album for some reason. It shouldn't be this good but it just works. It's like a 2014 Moto X in the sense that on paper it's not special. However, if you use it (listen to it) then it grows on you.
MGK has better beat selection, better bars, and better beats. I can't believe I'm checking for Logic now.
What happened to that skinny dusty DMV nigga y'all championed a while back. I remember one of y'all posting a video a while back but I can't find it.

If he was gonna be influenced by a biracial rapper, I'd recommend Chino XL, but you know, Drake's got the spotlight right now. Ha.
If you are gonna support a contemporary rapper on a major label, I would say buy Logic's joint. He uses the b-word too liberally for my tastes. He's also obviously influenced by the golden era (Nikki will remind people of another song, but I won't give anything away). The MM interludes were cool, there's a "So Fresh, So Clean" hook interpolation, etc.
He outsold TI (their records dropped the same day), which is quite impressive for a new artist without any major co-signs (No ID exec produced, but most people don't know that...or know No ID, for that matter, even though folks who pay attention salute him).
And he's from Maryland, so I'm compelled to say....DMV wins again. Ha.
