"Method Man Appreciation"

Aight...so I've been playing these Meth albums this weekend...and my conclusion, Meth is under-appreciated.

He's started off as everyone's favorite MC back in 93 but I feel like CREAM, Method Man and Bring The Pain were his "Illmatic" before his debut even dropped.

Tical was dope but to some it was a bit of a disappointment. Then Cuban Linx and Liquid Swords happened and Tical was an afterthought.

However, throughout that time, Meth did the Big and Pac guest spot. Was the Wu member everyone looked for on each solo from Raw Hide to Ice Cream to Wu-Gambinos to Shadowboxin' to Box In Hand. He also dropped How High with Red and started everyone's new favorite duo.

I don't think there's any question that Deck and Meth owned Forever.

Then Judgement Day dropped and it again was a bit of a disappointment. Maybe the fall of the Wu around that time had something to do with it. Maybe people grew tired of the crew...not sure.

Blackout! dropped and was pretty well received but not as well as How High.

By the time The Prequal dropped, Meth was a complete afterthought and the album was not good.

The Day After dropped and while is got good reviews, Meth was well passed his prime.

After running through his discography, every single one of his albums sounds much better in retrospect than it did when it dropped. And when I say better I mean that I would call 3 out of 4 of his albums good to great.

Throw in Blackout 1 and 2, his numerous guest spots (he killed Cuban Linx 2) and his original popularity and I think his career has been more under-appreciated than a disappointment.

What's the Lesson think?

And to make this a true appreciation post;
What's your favorite song, verse, guest spot and album?

Tical at the time wasn't the be all, end all album us fans were expecting but I absolutely find it a joyous listen to this very day. I sing along to every song like a mongloid.

Second album has some of his best rapping ever on it. If you trim the skits, the girl songs and some of the Sermon.Funklord stuff that doesn't compliment his dark image you have lots of joint.

third album was a disater. 4:21 was pretty damn good.

i never thought much of the Blackout! album. Like I said, Meth gets his doof on too much when paired with Redman & E Double.

Brother had the talent to really be talked about as top 10 MC, just could never really put it all together….can't call it, duke still shines in spots, but around the time he got with Redman and did the whole weed rapper ish, I was pretty much done….4th best Wu member on the Mic….

I think Ghost and Rae owned disc 2. They bodied all songs except the
3 solos. Deck def was next up to bat so his presence was strong
throughout but go back to disc 2 especially and tell me Ghost & Rae
didn't tag team the hell out of that muhfugga.

As for Meth, I'm a T2 > Tical kinda guy. He seems to need others to
push him. Voice is dope so he gets over with lazy rhymes at times.
Just my opinion of Meth.

I was never the biggest fan of disc 2. It had its joints but I thought disc 1 was a lot more consistent even though it was shorter (strange ass split of 11 and 17 if you ask me).

And I didn't mean to say others didn't come strong because Rae and Ghost always do.

I just still felt that Deck and Meth were the favorites. Even on Triumph, those two set the tone and had the longest verses for a reason.

but I always thought that disc one was trying to be a solid, short album while disc two was just a throw everything on the wall and see what sticks kind of mix. Too many tracks all together to only put out one CD, but disc one was missing something (maybe just a few tracks from disc two, because some people didn't get on tracks enough) and disc two was bloated and had some filler on there.

...disc 1 had some lame, "enhanced" cd content which I guess meant that they then coudn't fit as much music on it.

I think the only thing I had heard from Wu was "C.R.E.A.M.", and I'll say forever that East Coast rap videos were just too dark for me, compared to sunny, pulling-tits-out West Coast videos. "Bring the Pain" was just crazy, eye-catching, etc. The weird shots of the eye on the subway. "You're All I Need" was dope, too. He's been my fave before I even bothered to care about the other 8+ dudes.

Side note: is there not a sample on "Torture" from T2? If so, it's uncredited.

He just can't craft a full banging album. I think his albums only sound as good as they do because he sticks close to Rza for the most part. Tical and T2 are good albums that could have been great. Damn shame because he's my favorite out the clan. Instead I gotta roll with Ghost because I got a good 5 albums out of Ghost that are official tissue. SMH

I'm surprised he hasn't had a renaissance lately in that Curren$y/Smoke DZA lane. he does that "weed rapper with skills" lane very well.

It was dope hearing him pop up w/A$AP on Trillmatic recently...great feature.

Except the problem is that he's never reached that potential as a solo artist and the best of his solo albums hover around 3.5 mics. I'd say the best album he's done with his name on the title is the first "Blackout!".

I'll also say he does his best work on verses for Wu-Tang Clan albums or appearances on the albums of other Clan members or affiliates. He's either the best or second best at that type of thing, depending on my mood. And he's number #3 for guest appearances for non-Clan members.

>Tical was dope but to some it was a bit of a disappointment.

Tical had a very good side one, but a very spotty side 2. Only like maybe three songs on the second half (Release, PLO Style, and Mr. Sandman). The other tracks on that second half were dreadfully boring.

I personally give it to Deck and RZA (and GZA, who appearances, as always, were limited). But Meth was incredibly strong on that album.

I think it suffered from the same problem of a lot of the second Wu solo albums (and a few of the debut solo albums) released around that period: not enough involvement from the RZA, either as producer or as executive producer. Also, as I've said on here at least a few times before, it's one of those albums where the whole doesn't add up to the sum of it's parts. I can look at a tracklist and say, "Damn, I liked 10 of these songs a lot" but I've still never felt the need to listen to the album all that much.

Man, I barely remember that album. I think I recall the single and the track with Busta, but that's about it.

Another album where I can look at it and love a lot of the single tracks but it never caught on as a whole. "Walk On" is one in my top three of Red & Meth collabos.

>What's your favorite song, verse, guest spot and album?

Song: Dangerous Grounds
Guest Spot: Probably have to think about this more, but either GZA's "Shadowboxin" or Sunz of Man's "Collaboration '98"
Album: Judgement Day
Bonus - Favorite collab with Redman: Da Rockwilder

This is what annoys me about Meth. He saves his best verses for other people's songs. He lacks direction when it comes to his solo stuff.

Obviously there's M.E.T.H.O.D. Man from 36 Chambers, but I remember being mesmerised with his verse on Flowers from Bulletproof Wallets. His wordplay is A+ too, especially when he's on a track with other Clan members. He had two of the most memorable verses on OB4CL2. If a track has 'feat. Method Man' next to it, you can bet that he will steal the show. No classic to his name, but I bet he has 3 discs worth of greatest hits material from all his solo, group, M&R and guest work.

I've been on a Wu kick lately, tis the season. Didn't feel like making a new post but listening to Blackout and that album has aged well imo. Dope beats and rhymes, yeah not saying anything important which is expected from them but its fun as hell to listen to. Red probably overall is better but Meth holds it down too, very fun album.

For a guy who claims he's going to focus solely on acting that's a good way to go out.

...the album because he “involved enough to make a comment.” I'm like, homie, you're on half the damn album. You were more "involved" with it than anyone not named Mathematics or maybe RZA.

On Combat Jack, he said they’d go to the studio on most of their tour dates, so that’s why he’s on so many songs.

and a lot of the time he's been overshadowed by his group members as individuals as a result of either bad timing (GZA on LS, Rae and Ghost on Cuban Linx and Clientele, respectively) or just being outright bested by a superior talent (Redman on both Blackouts and song features together). But he's always been more than reliable and he's gotten better and better by the year. What he did on this album may be his best overall showing on any album he's done.

Tical could have been a masterpiece if it wasn't haphazardly recorded while on tour. Having him focus on just creating and making that album without distraction would probably have changed his career trajectory as far as album output goes for the better.

Meth has more range, his flow and delivery is better and more versatile, and as subjective as it is...he flat out has one of the best voices of all-time in hip-hop

and I think it was obvious at the time since Meth dropped the first solo album out of the crew. Take those solos albums away and there's no debate to be had. Method Man had quality verses on every Wutang Clan album IMHO.
