He wisely doesn't get minstrely with it.

I actually find Iggy's blaccent to be full-on camp and I really don't have much problem with it, which is weird because I resented Eminem from minute one for his cartoonishness and the effect I thought that had on Hip-Hop. To this day I turn the station as fast as I can when an Eminem song comes on.

He actually lived in Detroit locations, so he cant help but develop an accent. And he has that accent in interviews so it's not like he's playing a character. Plus its not like a strong accent anyway.

However, Drake and Iggy are pretty much playing a character. In real life, Drake sounds like photographer for a swanky NYC fashion magazine. It's pretty embarrassing how Hip Hop easily accepts this fakeness.

does eminem intend to kill ppl that bought his record?
is David Bowie really an alien from outer space?
does everything talked about on a black record have to be litterally true?

or are some of these songs fantasies and exaggerations?

i don't know that every country artist grew up in a blue collar town south of Bakersfield.
does their lack of " authenticity" undermine their work?

i know beyonce talks about "growing up in the church."
did she?
how do you know?
does it matter?
should it?

lol @ adults not realizing that everything an artist says
is not litterally true.

Check out his early interviews. Howard Stern rightfully went at him pretty good for it. He stopped at some point in time....early enough to be forgiveable.

"gets it" y'know?

i see why you constantly mock other white people who "Try too hard" and who are "wiggers" because, well, they just don't get and understand how white people are supposed to think about black people like you do

thank you for shaming the true wiggers and letting us be witness to what true whiteness that loves blackness is, you sir are a beacon of racial conciliation, and there is absolutely no irony at all in the fact that you judge other whites for trying too hard because you are actually the one who is down enough with the black folks to know the proper way to act

remember when you were telling black people in GD why they should hate Iggy Azalea, because she's a white who fakes black and the blacks should know that because you do? that was awesome

kudos sir, now go enjoy a crack rock before somebody calls Canadian Child Protective Services and saves those kids you're raising.

over the past 2 days i have seen you in multiple posts.
you talk about posters.
you talk about how you think ppl should write.

but sometimes, it's okay to participate in the music discussion
by talking about...

you know,

music.

that's the theme around here.
we sit around and discuss music.
sure, we deviate every now and then.

occasionally, we talk about each other.
but we really try to keep the discussions focused on music.

try it, sometime.

I don't see how people are seeing him as fake.

I mean, what do people want? Is a rapper supposed to talk the same way to an old lady that he does when rapping about police brutality? I think we can afford them some flexibility in that regard. lol.

It's only my interaction around here that I talk to descendants of American slavery. In Toronto....I'd estimate 95% of black people are of west indian or African descent. Ie...they knew where their ancestry comes from. That's what we're talking about right? Black with a capital B means you are a descendant of American slavery and don't know where your ancestors come from? That's what I've gathered from discussions here.

If my definition is correct....Drake is indeed Black with a capital B. His father's from Memphis. Not sure why that should matter though. Suppose Drake's father was Jamaican.....would that make his dialect more inappropriate?

and I found myself asking myself if stuff like this was any different

http://youtu.be/n_zQLb4LCgI

I know this is far from an original thought, by the way... It's been asked a lot, with reference to people like George Michael and I always deflected it with arguments like this

http://www.buzzfeed.com/jessicamisener/why-dont-british-singers-have-british-accents-when-they-sing#3t4i3rw

and also the fact the accent Iggy rhymes with is not a generic American, but a very specific (and trendy) regional dialect.

But could the same case be made for this?

http://youtu.be/mTa8U0Wa0q8

"Ah hawp yi dawn maaand.... Ah hawp yi dawn maand..."

Somehow, Iggy still strikes me as camp where the earlier Brit singers who worshipped Americana don't.

I'm trying to figure out why.

(EDIT: I can't ignore of course that the Beatles track is a demo and they were just fucking around... the accents are not as camp in the final recorded version)

Perhaps it's because Iggy is actually undertaking a 'persona'. I said in another post....it's almost like she's Alice Cooper....playing a character. So it's more than just an accent.

George Michael certainly isn't doing that. To draw a comparison....suppose an Englishman did country music. And he kinda copped an American accent because that's what his influences sounded like. Ok, fair enough. Now imagine if he took it a step further....and appeared in videos driving pick-up trucks around texas...with an American flag and blue jeans and a cowboy hat etc etc etc. I think that's the difference between Iggy and George. George isn't taking on a culturally-driven persona.

I don't know enough about him to say either way. Is he exploiting negative stereotypes about white southern americans? Does he fake an accent and use white southern slang and all that?

Perhaps my analogy isn't good.

In response to Reply # 22

we/I hear most rap as a form of regular speech and something that informs us of how that artist might actually speak in their day to day lives, whereas singing always comes off as pure artistic expression because no person would ever speak the way they sing, and if they did they'd be very annoying people (ie. why so many people just can't get with musicals or musical theater).

When a white northern british male sings like a black southern american male it's generally accepted as an artistic choice, whereas a white female australian "talking" like a black american female is (more easily) considered a cultural affront.

I don't even think it's a conscious choice, really...it happens naturally. The majority of British or Aussie singers sound like they have an American accent. My brother in law is a musician (from the UK) and was explaining that it has to do with how vowels are neutralized when they're elongated, resulting in something that generally sounds American. To put it another way, it's hard to sing with a thick British accent unless you're deliberately trying to. If you just sing naturally, the vowels are neutralized.

This explains it fairly well: http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2013/08/why-british-singers-lose-their-accent-when-singing/

Of course, rapping is totally different. Your rapping voice should be similar to your speaking voice. Iggy's deliberately changing how she sounds.

Accents are fluid. Is she playing it up?

sure.

Is she alone in pretending to be someone she's not?

I don't think so.
