People been doing drugs and dancing in clubs since well before disco

So odds are, the first song about the discotheque was a disco song.

All of the hallmarks one associates with club culture were in place or emergent at that time (late 60's - early 70's)

For some people it's church. For everyone else it's ths club.

Whether the club as a speakeasy, bar, juke joint or whatever...serves the same purpose

Because then the question is why did the terminology "club" become dominant? It probably wasn't random, and that lack of randomness points to a difference in the significance of the word from whatever its significance was previously.

So Daughter Maitland signing at the Onyx on the Boardwalk is not the same as Cam'rom dropping a few bars live at Dream in 2002.

That period when hip-hop acts were experimenting with putting one house track on the album. It was interesting because these were not "up in the club" songs in the modern sense. They didn't have the sense of... majesty that you get from "Big Poppa" and all that, like sitting in VIP waving flutes of champagne in the air.

The hip-hoppers almost treated "the club" like a foreign territory in which they were bemused tourists.
