I was looking forward to his album but it wasn't good. I thought my dudes ran out of steam on production but then I found out he didn't work with the same guys (Illangelo & Doc McKinney) that produced the 3 free albums. Big mistake IMO

agree with this... the rapey lyrics and cursing makes his music unlistenable...

Didn't get into the new album as much but that album was very well put together. Did a very good job of sounding dark, or at least someone trying to sound dark if that makes any sense. There was some creepy shit by the third disc tho..

Also love that song he did with Kavinsky

his whole 'i run trains on chicks that pop pills' shit gets old after a while.
and i don't mind that he curses but (and i'm gonna blame this on being canadian)
he curses mad awkwardly a lot of times
again i don't hate him, i like his voice and his sound
but he has way too many songs that just sound alike and meander aimlessly in his
pill popping world.
he needs to reign it in.

With Kissland and the subsequent stand alone singles, while not bad, show that his old producers Doc McKinney and Illangelo seems to also have had a hand in the songwriting...the post Trilogy tracks meander a bit too much as a whole

It's just word of mouth. But the word is that he really did someone dirty.

So apparently there was a bedroom producer called Zodiac. Zodiac came up with this sound that was part rnb, part industrial music with a really dark edge. Then he met Abel who supposedly was just an average, run-of-the-mill rnb singer. So Zodiac convinced him to hop on board with this sound he had. But he couldn't sing about 'baby baby baby' shit. It had to be dark. So he convinced him to sing about cocaine hangovers and suicide and shit like that. Abel complied and they got some buzz.

Of course, everyone attributed the sound and style to Abel. But it was ENTIRELY Zodiac's baby. Abel was just along for the ride...and reluctantly at first. What happens?

Abel ditches Zodiac. Finds established producers who start making music that sound like Zodiac. Zodiac left in the dust. Abel goes on to successful career with a very specific style and sound that he stole off someone else.

At least that's how it's been told to me.

I just heard the story. And I believe it. But I don't have proof.

He DID show me a track that Abel did before meeting Zodiac. And yah....it was just generic rnb ballad stuff. Really cheesy too.

So who wrote the first three tapes? because despite the detractors in this thread the writing was brilliantly bleak, now (which is at this point'then'),and edgy.

if Abel wrote, he's a winner IMO.

In the early days I was made to understand that The Weeknd was actually a group but after a certain point, it seemed to become a single guy.

I'd heard that he ditched the other dude or dudes in the group (it was supposed to have been a duo or a trio) and went at it alone, with increasingly uninspired results.

I trust the source though.

The Weeknd was a duo and Zodiac made up the name and directed their image/artwork and all that.

I mean, yah, shit like this happens all the time. I just thought it was interesting because during this particular conversation (it happened awhile ago) I was saying how refreshing it was to see someone come with an original vision. And that I wasn't entirely impressed with the music/singing....but just appreciated that someone was going their own way. That's when dude interrupted me.

After you take away the specific style and approach of his music....there's not much to Abel imo. So when I found out that he kinda hijacked the whole concept....I wasn't left with much to appreciate about him.

And for me, frankly, that was absolutely the MOST intriguing thing about The Weeknd... much more so than the music itself.

I've just found The Weeknd to be less interesting since Abel first showed his face and less and less so since the entire project has focused around him personally.

(I went and listened to his pre-Weeknd R&B stuff... "Birthday Suit" and all that. It's.... not bad, guess.)

because Drake cosigned Weeknd just to get him under the OVO label but Weeknd signed to the label straight out without OVO.

If Weeknd stayed with Drake's label you probably wouldn't have PartyNextDoor out here with his faux-Weeknd albums.

And Zodiac's been around with that sound way before The Weeknd was around. If you check some of the blogs and Pitchfork, you'll see some of his music posted along some features. And the musical influence was definitely there.

After the initial trilogy, he ditched the producers who helmed his sound and essentially became a parody of himself.

I completely believe the industry insider's story about Abel stealing Zodiac's idea and running to the bank w/ it. Happens all the time in the industry. I also heard some of Abel's pre-Weeknd stuff and he was very much a run-of-the-mill pop/r&b vocalist.

I think yeah the initial idea of the group was spawned by him....but as anyone knows and as you can see Abel was always gonna be the star. At the end of the day Zodiac cant expect Abel to be a puppet and do everything he says....Also asking to be paid for something that isnt worth anything YET is ridiculous and shows that you werent in it for the long haul. Im sure theres other people in Abels wear too I wouldnt put that past the people/person who were around at the time.
