at a time when the music industry should be throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks - they have scaled back and release less material than probably ever.

then you factor in people genuinely not caring for the material they choose to endorse and present to the public... and that's your problem.

the frozen ost selling 3m or adele selling 10m in the last 2 years is proof there are people willing to buy albums - the problem is the tripe rolled out month after month isn't their taste.

less material to choose from, less material anyone genuinely likes and less sales as a result.
statistically, the record industry has run-off most of their consumer base and tried to say everyone was "bootlegging".

people on here will try to say "streams" or "bootlegging" too - but streams count as sales on soundscan now and mp3 bootlegging of new music is much less widespread than 10 years ago imo.

on the open market.

if we took a look at every single piece of recorded music offered for sale in any given year and compare that music to every single piece of recorded music offered for sale this year as of today's date i am 100% certain i will not agree that the music released today is generally of lesser quality than the music released in any other given year. i will likely agree that i liked some older music more - and i understand that my appreciation for that music is based largely in my familiarity w/that music, nostalgia, and my generalized dislike of new things.

fuck you.

it's pretty silly and shortsighted to argue that music released today is of lesser quality than music released in any given year in the past.

it's better to admit that one's personal taste has changed such that one no longer has the same appreciation for contemporary music as one had in the past simply b/c one is aging and one's taste and preferences and priorities have changed as music has changed. that's a pretty common experience as one ages given that much contemporary popular music is made for the youth audience. once one is out of the youth market it's not uncommon for one's disdain for contemporary music to grow. the trend tends not to reverse itself as time goes by. it's part of life.

fuck you.

when statistically provable - i don't agree.

compare 2014 vs 1984.

we're not talking about personal tastes - we're talking about reach and quantity.

obviously the material being released today isn't resonating on the same level with the buying audience and the numbers back that up.

i mean not 1 album going platinum? that's abysmal business.

Doesn't say anything about soundscan numbers though. When it comes to soundscan its still based on physical + digital sales only.

and charging 18 dollars for CDs.
and blowing off the digital music revolution for several years.
and dropping artists for not going platnum the first time out.
and getting rid of payola.

i mean if the music industry was trying to destroy itself,
they couldn't have planned it better.

i mean, this is at least 80 percent their fault.
bootlegging was always around.
so what?

they seemed to make an effort to destroy an entire generations
desire to purchase music.

this is what they get.

and also, Sony should have promoted "invincible" better.
sure, it was inconsistent but those ballads could have cooked on the charts for years.
not saying that mike could have generated another billion dollars for the music industry,
but if your dying, don't kill cash cows.

that's all i have to say about that.

Couple things

1) No heavy hitters have dropped this year (Drake, Em, JT, Beyonce, jay-z, Rihanna)

2) Pretty obvious streaming IS the new way of consumption. I don't need to buy something I have access to immediately with just barely a commercial every couple songs..

This is a more interesting article and future thinking

http://thetrichordist.com/2014/10/14/streaming-is-the-future-spotify-is-not-lets-talk-solutions/

I dont agree with it all (I think windowing is wack) but based on the way I watch Hulu I think some of these things could be immediately applicable.

- Give people freemium and pay wall options (Paid subscribers get access early?).

- $7/month might be a better price point.

- High Quality files as an additional upgrade

But yea... this everyone going platinum shit is a wrap..

I was under the assumption that YouTube was the "new" music industry w/ pop acts continually racking up between 20-40 million views per video.
