and not just to say, "Oh Dilla's the shit, he fathered all these
new beat makers..."

It's because

Raw Cartoons
July Heat
and even 1983 are all Dilla knock offs.

He didn't have his own style till LA.

Even the Reset EP was just copy cat stuff of other people's music.

with the electronic music (and i use that term loosely) scene of post 2005 Los Angeles

it was very DIY at Little Temple's Sketch Book instrumental night, and myspace music pages, as he, Black Monk, Kutmah, Ras G, Daddy Kev, Dibiase, and many others cultivated THEIR sound and scene, and eventually got to LET

Once Stones Throw dropped the ball in singing Lotus, Adult Swim kept playing his sounds during show breaks, Lotus shed the simulacra of Lib and Dilla, and Lotus amassed hella followers locally and on the net, Warp came a calling.

Perfuse's sound was / is never gunna be a as accessible because of how fragmented and un-melodic it can be, even when it's very boom-bap in the "skeletal frame" of the beat

Daedelus, well he was always more of an ambient niche electronic musician. Dope samples, good grooves, but a bit strange and sparse in many places.

Lotus just took all that shit made it fun & danceable for hipster white broads, weird / challenging enough for the critics, and beat heavy for the heads. All that helped build one of the bigger non-mainstream followings of any current music artist

Glitch, ambient, drum n bass, jazz, hip-hop, and his aunt. He's a reflection of the LA beat scene at the time of his debut.

it's not that simple but it kinda is. I mean only the man himself can tell you exactly but if you delve into these genres(artists) you'll understand a little bit of how he's come to where he is now.

To be specific though, there is no direct "father" to his style. But if you put into context where his roots are he fits right into that experimental hip-hop/electronic music of the mid 00's.

it's one of my favorite songs right now, but if it isn't just total return to forever iono what is

but yeah in that flylo/kdot post in gd, i mentioned that i think this particular iteration of flylo/thundercat's sound is directly linked to RTF imo, and i like it.

Flying Lotus started out doing Aphex Twin IDM and drum and bass stuff. There's a video of him performing when he was pretty young. He got a huge influence off Jneiro's Brazilian beat style, imo. I believe he even got a big break opening for him.

Then there's the obvious J Dilla influence for loose style drum sequencing. Then the heavy compression employed by Madlib.

I think he currently is a peer, but you can't deny FlyLo wasn't influenced by him. FlyLo even got a big break opening for him when he was just a young slightly known dude.

Jneiro interview

"
Clash Music

Do you feel a kinship with the Low End Theory scene?
Y’know obviously I’m been doing this kind of stuff for a very long time but there was no scene for that type of sound, I guess. It was more like I was just doing something and along with Dabrye, J Dilla, Madlib and other producers that were forward thinking hip hop producers they were doing things that.. we obviously borrowed some inspiration from electronic music in some of our samples, some of our approach to how we worked on tracks. But there wasn’t necessarily a scene for it. We didn’t fit in with traditional hip hop because we was the more weirder of the genre. So when they started the whole Low End thing, and all these young kids came up – Flying Lotus, all them used to hit me up on MySpace back in the day. I ended up befriending those guys. Samiyam, all those guys out in LA. A few other people moved to LA so all of a sudden you had these people meeting on the internet who were into the Doctor Who Dat sounds, the Madlib – forward thinking, electronic hip hop music. "

I don't hear that album at all in You're Dead.
I hear Herbie's Sextant in some of the non jazz fusion tracks.
A bit of Soft Machine 1 and 2 in the vocal appearances on You're Dead.
Hear a bit of He Love Him Madly by Miles though...

Prefuse 73 and Dilla mostly.

And lately as some mentioned he's gotten into Prog Jazz territory
(Chick Corea/Return to Forever)

Not sure how Prefuse's influence on the creation of the "beat scene"
gets so downplayed. Just as much if not more of an influence as Dilla
imo.
