I can imagine this rings pretty crazy in his DJ sets....
This isn't a new trend..
Green has a few of them... TWRK does a ton as well...
The TWERk/Bounce EDM subgenre allows for a lot of awesome because it's basically hip hop tempos
I imagine this into "Fuck them other niggas" or some TNGHT/Hud Mo works pretty fuckin well

In the late '90s/early '00s it was Jungle remixes to tracks (I remember hearing remixes for "Simon Says," "A Friend" by KRS, etc.) In the mid '90s it was the Chemical Brothers remixing "Bring the Pain." In the late '80s/early '90s it was House or "UK" mixes of Tribe songs.
I can understand why it's done, but most of it isn't for me.
In europe, Eric B and Rakim are still primarily recognized for the Coldcut RMX of "Paid in full" (NOTE:I'm obviously not talking about "heads" here but music fans in general). And I remember all those horrendous euro-dance remixes of not just Tribe but De La Soul as well.
The approach has gone away during various periods but overall, I think it has always been more-or-less present here in europe; it might seem newer in america though...
I made a bunch of mid-tempo disco edits of early 90's tracks. When I play them out they go good in a mix of Off The Wall MJ, Give Me The Night, stuff like that.

the actual "spirit" and standards that birthed all this music from the 20th century that we nostalgically can't for whatever reason let go of.
i mean if we're being honest making a "song" like that in the 90's would have ended dj lantern's career in "hip-hop". he never would've been covered by any "hip-hop" publication or outlet ever again...
