Is there a good retrospective collection available for her?

http://www.discogs.com/Nina-Simone-Anthology/release/643211. It covers all of the three labels she recorded for at the height of her powers (Colpix, Phillips & RCA), while most other compilations focus on one label or another. If you want to go deeper after that (and you will), there are a lot of great label-specific compilations ('Sugar In My Bowl', covering her RCA years, is one of the best of these), and the original albums themselves.

Worth noting, too, that you can grab the bulk of her official material for relatively little money through some of the larger, cheap sets. I'm thinking esp. of the RCA "complete albums" set that was going for around 50 or 60 a year or two ago, which has all her albums for that label... the set has no liners, just reproductions of the original artwork, but the sound quality is good and imo still a steal if you're looking for hard copies. A similar (though less complete, I think) set exists for Philips (Four Women) for around 40. Wish there was one for her Colpix years, but I don't think there's anything as comprehensive available...

I fell deep in love with Nina when Meshell released her tribute album to her a few years back... I'd had a few lps of hers before, but never really dug into her like that. That RCA set is, imo, the best doc of her special genius --- it's got every side of her at her best, at one point or another. Nuff Said should be owned and studied by everyone, as both a unique historical doc (the bulk of it was recorded a few days after MLK was killed) and a musical masterpiece. The version of Sunday in Savannah on that album has some sort of holy ghost running through it, I swear.

Definitely worth noting - that RCA box set is incredible. Since it also compiles most (all?) of her outtakes from that era as bonus tracks for each album too, it's a goldmine even if you have some of the original albums, and a steal at the price.

The 'Four Women' box set does cover all of her Philips albums - and was one the first things that I purchased when I first got into her music, so I'm very fond of it. I find her albums in this era quite variable quality-wise compared to the Colpix and RCA eras (especially as there's only one live album, when a lot of her best and most consistent albums for the other two labels were concert recordings), but the best songs are some of the absolute peaks of her career, so I think they're well worth getting.

While there's no comparative Colpix box, the reissues that they did of (most of) her albums from that era around 2005 were great, and had a healthy amount of outtakes as well. I think they're out of print now, but still available digitally on itunes etc.
