2. "Pete Rock-and that's just looking at his album work" In response to Reply # 0
Once we get to his remix work and artist molding it becomes fairly one-sided

14. "That's mostly because "bangers" is Primo's style" In response to Reply # 13
But hip hop production isn't always about making bangers, even they are by definition a great beat. I think that's where Pete and Jay Dee separated themselves from Premier, though Premier could occasionally show subtlety as well, especially with Gang Starr. That's why Premier falls to #3 for me.
15. "Jay Dee can't put an album together like Primo " In response to Reply # 14
In fact he's more of a "banger" producer than he is an album - oriented one, which is one of the reasons why his list is a lot shorter than his superiors Not to say he doesn't do it well, but Donuts aside most of his material is of the "great song after great song" variety

The Shining is a bad example because of his health throughout the project and other than that I'm not sure what else we have to evaluate. I think his "shorter list" is circumstantial, personally, but I do see what you're getting at.
These lists are really subjective, anyway, and if you have Premier above Jay Dee I can't really argue against it. He's up there with him them at the highest echelon you can reach as a hip hop producer, the ordering is a matter of personal opinion.
