"The Writer's Bench - The Sophomore Jinx What Artists Let You Down On The..." Mon Sep-22-14 02:16 PM by Kil
This week on the Writer's Bench, we chop it up about artists who fell prey to the sophomore jinx and their 2nd album was either straight garbage or it didn't meet our expectations. I already KNOW cats 'round here got a RACK of 'em so what are they?

Yup...the funny thing is I kinda liked the 2nd Das album. I thought they brought it lyrically but beat wise the album did fall short. But I also remember probably being the ONLY person at Morgan State back in '93 who felt that way tho lol!

Beats weren't bangin like the debut. Plus they let biters make them abandon their style. They brought it back on Hold it Down though and I love that album.

Vendetta was definitely a let down but it did have a few joints. Unstoppable is a Pete Rock banger and he had two joint in the middle called Life N Lessons and Family or some shit that were dope to me.
I can't get with you on Dare Iz A Darkside but that was actually my first Redman album and I loved that shit.
If I was going to add one that would be controversial I would say Life After Death.
I actually like the album better now but it was a let down to me when it dropped. It was just too commercial for me.
And since I never added on to the top 5 favorite verses joint, I'll say in no order;
Nas - Verbal Intercourse Andre 3000 - Black Ice Black Thought - Section Mos Def - Hurricane AZ - Rather Unique (verse 1)
Classics that need to be mentioned; OC - Time's Up (verse 1) Prodigy - Shook Ones Pt 2 Inspectah Deck - CREAM Method Man - Bring The Pain (verse 2) Common - Resurrection (verse 1)

Hell yeah! K-Def did that "For Tha Family" track. I think Irv Gotti did "Life N Lessons". Havoc had a solid track on there too but those are the only three I mess with.

My fav album by Reggie. I argue with dudes all day about this album. I liked that him and Rockwilder handled most of the production too.

I agree. It was definitely a huge left turn if you were expecting a continuation of Whut?

I just played this joint...
Survival (Havoc) Life N Lessons For The Family Unstoppable (Pete Rock) Usual Suspects
Those joints are dope. The rest just fell victim to 97 lol

True and it also didn't help that his boy, Royal Flush, dropped a banger that year.

The Life After Death is a good choice too...I personally disagree but I mos def know enough folk who were let down by that album and they were looking for much more of the Gimme The Loot and Machine Gun Funk Big then the Mo Money Mo Problems Big.
Another Player Haters Nasty Boy The World Is Filled... I wasn't feeling Going Back To Cali when it dropped I hated Hypnotize I wasn't feeling Fucking You Tonight or I Love The Dough when it dropped
It was just real spotty and those bad spots were on some "I can't believe this bullshit" lol
Listening now I have more of appreciate for it. It would be a real dope single album but what double album do we not say that about?
Yeah...I feel you. Was never a fan of a lot of that 2nd CD...all the jawns you named were trash to me. It's almost like Big did what I feel cats should do now...make a CD for us and make 1 for them. I think that's why I wasn't mad at it like that.

Nice topic...I think Immobalirity will go down as one of the biggest flops EVER. I know some people may not be onto this but Terrence Trnet Darby's 2nd album Neither Fish or Flesh was bad too. Also Puff's 2nd album Forever was another album that was a huge letdown. Not that I was expecting anything from Puff but people can front all they want but No Way Out was a good album basically cause the bulk of it was recorded while Big was still alive.
