like Nicki wasn't exactly high on my list (she was trying to go too "Gaga" and stale-ass EDM when she started hitting IMO) but I recognized that she sought to distinguish herself among rappers, both visually and in rhyme style.
lowering the bar/limboing is a perfect way of describing her take on music. like, not to rehash the moral panic over "Anaconda", but I thought "well, wasn't she positioning herself to be -out- of the whole booty music archetype" when I first saw it. Absent the video, it reminded me of that weird kind of '90s nostalgia hook that was on Big Sean's "Dance (A$$)" (on which she was featured).
her "pop" music is awful but I realize she just can't go to "regular rapping" music either, the way she's positioned/presented herself. people would want the "crazy" Nicki Minaj.

But anyway - I don't know that he's "surpassed" it either, per se, but I can read between the lines of what you're saying and I think people around here are way too hard on Kweli. He's made a LOT of really good music since back then, even if you (like me) think Train of Thought is by FAR the best work he's ever done. It's just an unfair standard to hold him to considering it is one of my top 10 hip-hop albums of all time.

that album itself was a high bar. certainly exceeded expectations.
Not to say he hasn't put out heat, but something with that impact as a debut? Hard to get over that
