They produced Chi's album but I never knew they (Native Tongues) were that tight with BN. I just ranked the core members albums though.

people who would have the audacity to list Midnight Marauders at #1 would tend to think LONS & BBrand Nubian were in Native Tongues.

They feel more validated in being "down from the start" by picking the others.

It's weird but there are a few albums like that.

People just like to show that they were up on an artist first and that's one of the ways they do it.

It's like it makes then a bigger Native Tongues fan by picking and early De La or Tribe album as opposed to MM.

Or I just simply think MM is the 3rd best Tribe album. I agreed with the source. I also prefer the first 2 De La albums to it. But yeah, most people late to the tribe party lean MM.

I've done that before hate on an a groups album by saying the early stuff was better I'm not a Kid A fan but everyone hails it as Radiohead's finest work. I like Ok Computer and the Bends more even always acting like I'm was a fan of the group longer solely base off an album a person chooses(kid a).

Midnight Marauders to me was Tribe a bit too well oiled and predictable. In 1993, they felt a bit too familiar and I was checking for the newer blood more than Tribe. It has aged incredibly well but it's a bit Muzak like with all the electric piano tinges and stuff.

The first two Tribe albums were life changing events for me. Doesn't mean I don't still love MM.

To just retroactively downgrade a quality piece of work like that is just cheap. If you don't like it as much as you did back then, say that. If you are no longer into the styles of rapping, sounds being used, or the things being talked about on the album, say that. If you think the album had a novelty appeal, say that.

cultural aesthetic. I guess since because we don't rock those medallions/beads, read those books, or do those dances anymore, the J Beez are played out.

...the only album they had out during the "relevant" 90's boom-bap era was "Jbeez with the remedy" and that record was kind of a bummer even if I appreciate it more now. Oh yeah, they also had "Raw Deluxe" during the brief "comeback" of NT's but that one didn't amount to much and I doubt many even remembered them at that point.

Otherwise, their best shit falls outside of the time-window that the Lesson at large generally appreciate and unlike, say, Rakim or BDK, they didn't have advanced flows but instead sounded almost deliberately throwback then; I think it's hard for people raised on 90's boom-bap and gangsta-rap to really appreciate them.

Other problems are of course that their biggest hit was a Hip-House tune and that they never really had a successful album. Like, did they ever even go gold?

Personally, I didn't like "Done..." at all when it came out and re-bought and re-sold it numerous times over the years but in the past ten years, I've come to REALLY appreciate it and I think it's an incredibly creative, fun and colourful record that I'm actually more likely to play now than "3 feet..." which suffers too much from goofiness; definitely a top 5 NT's album to me.

And "Straight out the jungle" is just dope with the rugged beats combined with their light flows and mellow voices but again, I don't see a record like that being the lesson's cup of tea overall; I think you have to be kind of old to dig it honestly. If the kids (=people younger than 35, LOL!) are digging the 80's JB's shit, let me know, I would love to be wrong...

Note that I like both the Black Sheep-debut and Beatnuts "s/t" just as much if not more than any other NT-albums. Still, Beatnuts? To me, NT's had a vibe/aesthetic in lyrics and presentation and Beatnuts doesn't fit that at all IMO. Black Sheep on the other hand *kind* of do but if I include them, why not Beatnuts? Were they less "hangarounds"? Thus, i stick with the "core" acts for my list.

As for LONS? Ehh, I just don't think they were *that* good and not a fan of the females in the crew either...

1.Low End Theory
2. Done by the forces of nature
3. Midnight Marauders
4.Buhloone Mondstate
5.De La Soul is dead
6.3 Feet high...
7.Straight out the jungle
8.Peoples instictive travels etc.
9. Beats, Rhymes and life
10. Stakes is high

EDIT: As for Black Sheep and Beatnuts, they would be the 2 and 3 I guess if included...
