But I'm more interested in these releases than I have been in anything Prince has done since... I don't know, pre-3121? Keeping expectations in check, but he at least seems more energized than he has in a while. Hopefully that delivers at least a few cool tracks to add to my masterlist of 90s/00s diamonds in the often-roughs...

...and an album would never materialize. Now I'm interested in hearing this (and how it's gonna remain under wraps).

It'd be good to hear where his head is musically nowadays for a full length collection. Is he going for a "hey, I've got some music, remember me?" vibe as he tends to do when he gets a major label deal or something a lil off the grid? I'm thinking the former, but that doesn't necessarily mean something bad.

it looks like he's retaining the better songs he dropped as one-offs.

* - not a dis, people. that name for him is just hilarious.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I get Prince's battle with Warner but I can't tell you how pleased I am to know that he's working with the machine right now!

Hopefully everything else on his record sounds as cool as Clouds!

i would be excited, esp as hes back on warners.

but im pretty sure that label logo aside, its going to suck like his other recent albums. they all had some very minor gems, sure, but they were still pretty shitty.

this is just prince duping warners into releasing not one but TWO albums of his freshly recorded studio droppings so they get to re-release purple rain like they want to.

prince needs to realise that just because he was able to write top ten records in less than 10 minutes while walking from the paisley park car park to reception 30 years ago, it doesnt mean that he still can. he needs to spend longer on his material.

also, that album cover sucks.

Ahh....now we are twisting my words around...I never said anything about "Clouds" being a classic Prince song...I said the harmonies and guitar part reminded me of a time when Prince could make an R&B song and nobody would blink....

It reminded me something that he would have produced for the Time (as someone else noted in that thread...I think it was Gum)...It has THAT Prince quality...Now whether or not u feel that I'm making that out to be some classic Prince, that's on u...But it certainly has a little bit of that feel of pre-1999 sound...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

This is a blogging world homie...If you are looking for critical music journalism that's really hard to come by these days....

As for the song itself I dig it for what it is...Prince getting his contemporary mojo on with a twist of weird...The fact that he even sampled some underground shit shows that he is actually listening to music that's less than 20-40 years old...lol

I welcome Prince opening his mind....As long as he's not screaming these bitches ain't loyal I'm good...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

My problem is that i know he can do better than this
Giving his current crew, this is about as good as it's going to get.
I will say it again, dude thrives on competition.
His best work was done because he had competition or had folks in his crew that made him step his shit up.
Jesse and flyte tyme kept him on his toes
Wendy and Lisa kept him from making cheesy porn music
Mark my words, if and when this d'angelo record comes out and it is a success, we will get another great record from prince.

All I know is that my Twitter feed has been going nuts about this song...U and I know this is "GOOD" Prince...Not GOAT PRINCE...But I've stopped looking for THAT Prince a long time ago...Just like I stopped looking for GOAT STEVIE, Paul MAC, GOAT RAKIM, ect....The youngins and people who haven't picked up on a Prince in a minute (or have never wanted to listen to the man) are diggin it...

This is FUN/COOL Prince...I haven't heard FUN/COOL Prince in a while...

And chill with the Wendy and Lisa hype...Let's try to leave the '80s behind, homie...Trust me....I think Prince's legacy is secure without the girls who I respect immensely....But Dirty Mind happened....Controversy happened...1999 happened...Ect....

I think oldschool Prince fans need to stop being that old man screaming "GET OFF MY LAWN..."...This ain't "Jughead"..."U Know" sounds Prince getting contemporary on his own terms....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

W&L
I don't want the 80's nor would i like for him to get back with those folks
(Well, kinda)
But i've made peace with that
When i mention them, its because they (and a few others) were the ones that called him on his BS
He needs that
I refuse to accept good from someone who still has the ability to deliver great
Flashes of that still appear every now and again
Bro I don't want grumpy old prince
But theres nothing wrong with maturity
I want prince to wake the fuck up and get real
Dude is pushing 60 and has been through some shit
Probably still going through some shit
Show some truth and maturity in the songs
Something more than machismo and silly crushes on women that he can't really bang because of his religion
Is that asking too much?

**of course the youngins are digging it. The bar of quality music is totally different for them. I wish that these grown folks would stop making music for kids and make music for grown folks. We still like music.

**and no it ain't no jughead...

>W&L

No...he doesn't....
>I don't want the 80's nor would i like for him to get back
>with those folks

Nah...I'm good. I was old enough to experience that era at an age that I could really understand what was going on....I'm good...

>(Well, kinda)

Nah....

>But i've made peace with that

I'm with u...U def. should...No sense in living in the past...

>When i mention them, its because they (and a few others) were
>the ones that called him on his BS

They didn't call shit...lol

Prince let them have more control on the Parade album...One of my favorite joints...But let's not go crazy here...Prince was still boss man...There's a reason why Dream Factory never came out...It was Prince's most collaborative effort...Which is why the man freaked out, took the "W&L"/Revolution tracks off and went for dolo on SOTT...Prince was great either way...

>He needs that
>I refuse to accept good from someone who still has the ability
>to deliver great
>Flashes of that still appear every now and again
>Bro I don't want grumpy old prince
>But theres nothing wrong with maturity
>I want prince to wake the fuck up and get real
>Dude is pushing 60 and has been through some shit
>Probably still going through some shit
>Show some truth and maturity in the songs
>Something more than machismo and silly crushes on women that
>he can't really bang because of his religion
>Is that asking too much?

U mad because Prince still likes the fuck?...lol...Dylan's last albums were filled with songs about dude fucking...Nigga had a Victoria's Secret ad....

I want Prince to get the same long leash as white rockers who r allowed to go back to their base sound or just do them without getting called out because they are not reaching their peak or expanding the minds of listeners...I want Prince to be able to make music without his fans screaming "where's the genius" as if this dude has to be on some Super Magical Negro shit...

I would rather hear "Clouds" and "U Know" than "WHITECAPS" (which by the way sounds like it was made during a JW retreat) ANY day...lol

I've been through the horrible years of P....The years where he was a punchline....If people think that the new material he has been dropping is on THAT bullshit they are not being honest....Or they are reacting to their own musical bias...

When P drops a turd (The original "R&R Love Affair") I will def. call him on it like I've always done....

But I like this "fresh" Prince I've been hearing...Unshackled by his past and his fans who long for the days he let W&L get their shine...

It's 2014....Prince will never reach the heights he did of his prime because that's what happens to all the greats...Prince is no different...he blew his wad has had the most prolific decade of any pop star...I'm shocked he even was able to rock out at a high level in the studio for more than 6 years at the rate he was going...

Bottom line: I'm not mad at this R&B CHAMBER PRINCE...But of course I like more than just the ATWIAD/Parade/Dream Factory era....

I like R&B RADIO Prince too....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

I will agree with you that i wish he could go back to his base and make a record without all of the extras added on to it.
In order for him to do that, he has to step it up a notch
I think he fails to admit that there were people around that kept him in the right direction
Which is why i brought them up
They kept it 100 and still keep it 100
Andre was another who kept it 100 with him
Do i want them? No!!
Hell i think quest would keep it 100 with him as welll

**dude dylan aint the JW posterboy like our dude.....dylan has been making grown folks records for a long time.

>He needs someone like that around.

I like W&L too....when they worked with Prince...Without him I have a few joints that I dug...But those solo songs are easily forgotten...

>*Shelving Dream Factory and the Revolution was personal and
>immature in my opinion.

Nah...it's Prince being Prince...Welcome to the world of the control freak....lol

As for this whole "contemporary R&B" jab...I think that's been waaaaaay overblown...

"Incense & Candles" was Prince trying to keep up with the youngins...That was him trying to go Contemporary R&B...And it sounded a bit forced...

But these two new songs sound like Prince listening to radio and saying, "I'm going to do something "now" but on my terms....

"Clouds" and "U Know" sounds like Prince doing Prince while inspired by what's going on....I find it quite cool that the man (or someone in his crew) thought Mila J's underground joint could be flipped into something fresh and a bit weird...

When u hear Prince singing over a backwards, space heavy track that's a nod to the weird Prince...Nothing groundbreaking...Nothing earth shattering or mind consuming...

Just a fun record without the "Jughead" stank....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Like i said it's cool
But it just doesn't stick to me because i know it's radio prince and i think it could be a lot better.
Radio has shown up in various forms throughout his career
And this is the best radio P attempt so far
Hopefully radio p will disappear once he achieves the success he keeps longing for

104. "Bring Back the 80's"
In response to Reply # 40

I'm an 80's baby-I love relevant music that's out now(some of it). First I think that Prince was before his time when he was flying high in the 80's and maybe he'll never be able to get back to that level of where he was other than---his time is over. (even though I still believe in him)

What I'm trying to say is that I hear all kinds of influences from Prince in from back in the 80's with music that's out now. I think he should come out with some updated 80's style music-I would go nuts. Yes I can't let go!

It's far from classic Prince. But it has a cool little vibe. It's not great, but it's far from cringeworthy IMO. Yes, the bar has been lowered for Prince. It is what it is. As long as it's not horrible (I'm looking at you "FALLINLOVE".), then I'm okay.

Heard that one today too. Like he said, I want to hear Prince singing it but Hannah is okay. I understand its a 'band' release.

because they sound like something I would like to hear together. and hell, some of those 3EG songs I'm going to wish were Prince songs.

but we'll wait and see. Not expecting any surprises at this point.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Really any producer - although preferably someone who doesn't have a heavy hand

But even if someone convinced Prince to let a real producer in, you know that shit would never be released... no matter how good or bad, Prince's ego wouldn't let it happen

Lanois would get my vote as well - saw him perform last year and him and his 2 piece band destroyed the venue.

Prince needs help and I'm not sure what people are listening to when they trump 'U Know'. I must have a very different version

Nah...it's just different strokes homie...I HATED "Mr. Goodnight" when I first heard it....So I get what u r saying...

The irony is "U Know" is turning out to be one of his biggest Itune hits in years...It's interesting talking to folks who are not hardcore Prince fans that don't have his GOAT years in their mindset to compare to...

Murph,

I agree - different strokes for different folks and that's the end of the story at the end of the day.

I guess I might be too old or too old fashioned for U Know... that said, after hearing U Know and then relistening to Clouds, it became painfully obvious that Clouds' sound is old while U Know sounds hip and fresh. While I don't like U Know, I can tell that it's far more fresh sounding than Clouds - which I really like.

Ya might as well count Jet!!
The single is at the top based on the album pre-order from the fans.
My teenage son (who likes p) and his crew ain't downloading clouds.

Now..It's saying something when it hits the Billboard top 10 (something he hasn't done in 20 years) and not the r&b top 10 either because he's shown up on there after 1994.

It's kinda head scratching that you don't like Goodnight but co-signing the latest stuff and letting The Word be on an all time list.
It's all the same to me
To each his own bro..

Nah..I think we all have to step into the world of 2014....Itunes means a lot to music acts and the music industry TODAY...Hell...Itunes basically changed the way people consume music, damn near put ALL traditional music retailers out of business and is used as the new barometer for ONLINE record sales....

Again...I don't mind people saying they hate "Clouds" and "U Know"...Lord knows I've hated my fair share of Prince songs...lol

But let's not be all cheeky on some but-but-but-it's-only-ITUNES!!!...lol...When Beyonce sold over 600,000 copies of her album via Itunes no one was screaming, "BUT IT'S NOT BILLBOARD"...Ha!...The sales ranking is not pre-sale...Dude just released the song on Itunes for purchase. And people are buying it...

Given that online sales have taken over retail scans and Itunes is the leader in that former category then Itunes matters...A lot...

I love the Lesson...But sometimes we all tend to be in a little bubble. I do it myself sometimes....But this is the world we are in today. Itunes means as much and at times more than Billboard....

In response to Reply # 66

that ain't saying much man
especially considering the # is based on pre-sales of the album
and the album pre-sale is at.....93!!!!!!!
and 3EG is nowhere to be found on any chart
maybe they're on the watchtower 100

but the album pre-sale for the r&b charts is #5
we all know r&b don't sell like it used to
If that's WB cheer to boost his ego...that's a weak cheer.

r&b iTunes don't mean jack to folks outside of the bubble either
To most, if it ain't on no blazing hip-hop and r&b station....it ain't no hit!!!
i'm sure it will get some play from today's classic soul and today's r&b station..it fits right in with their boring sleepy-time format.
and he's been on those charts with the majority of his 00 major releases sans 20Ten so he's still in the same bag.

If u were talking about just "Clouds" u would have a point about that sleepy time airplay...

But I can tell u this...When I'm on Twitter it's not the sleepy-time format listeners that are Tweeting about "U Know"...It's the kids who knows he's an icon but are not usually checking for him...They are now on some "Prince is back!!!"...lol (which is hilarious BTW)...

As for the industry talk, this is what I'm hearing from some folks in the know: Warner Bros. will not be only targeting "U Know" to the Tom Joyner type outlets. They r going to push him to the Power/Hot radio set as well...And they are going for those I Heart Radio stations as well...

All this to say...I've seen the usual polite reception Prince has been getting from these leaks over the last five years or so...He usually depends on social media bloggers to respectfully write on some "Prince the legend has a new song out.." shit...And it's usually the hardcore Prince fans that are on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram about Prince's latest song...

"U Know" however, seems to be doing something different....Warner Bros. (and Prince) is using the social media popularity of Mila J to make the connection that this is not your Father's Prince...

I think it's going to be interesting to see what this new album will do...But I think more interesting is how "U Know" is being received...The old heads are divided...But the social media kids seem to think Prince is making a return to form (again...the irony is priceless)...I think he's going to surprise a lot of people with this project in terms of public reception....

Oh...And u right...and nobody is really checking for that 3EG album....The Prince solo joint is getting all the buzz, even at a pre-sales clipe....

http://www.popvortex.com/music/charts/top-soul-songs.php (I'm talking about R&B songs, not that pre-sale album charts...Let's wait and see what it does on the overall Itunes charts given that it hasn't even been full serviced to outlets yet...)

And one thing to keep in mind. None of those songs have yet to be officially released to radio....I don't expect Prince to pull out a platinum record with this shit...But if his standing continues to rise on social media AND he gets some spin beyond the old school radio outlets, which he will with "U Know," that's all he needs given that his bag is touring...

As for "Mr Goodnight"...I'm not into dude going into fullblown MC PRINCEY...Too old-man-in-the-club for me...When Prince does happen to tap into "rap" I tolerate it more when it's quirky or on his own terms...("Get Off"..."U Know"...ect...)

But I can't stand that easy listening hip-hop shit he was doing on "Mr. Goodnight"...lol

*And "U Know" is the song I was talking about on Itunes...Not "Clouds"...Good spar as usual though...RESPECT...*

81. "Albums of the week: Prince plays two (USA Today SWIPE)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2014/09/29/prince-3rdeyegirl-plectrumelectrum-art-official-age-listen-up-album-of-the-week/16423091/

By releasing two albums on the same day, Prince plays to a pair of personality traits that have defined his career: his endearingly prolific creativity and his maddening inability to edit himself.

Art Official Age (**½ out of four), a vintage-styled set of funk and soul, and PlectrumElectrum (**½), an album with his female power trio 3rdEyeGirl, sound too different to have been packaged together. But they suffer from the same problems: The highlights are thrilling enough to raise expectations yet they make tracks that once might have languished in the vaults of Paisley Park sound even more exasperating.

"Welcome home, class," Prince intones professorially on Art Official Cage, "you've come a long way." He's soon singing over a four-on-the-floor EDM-disco groove that helps him set up a futuristic concept about falling into suspended animation for 45 years and re-awakening in a utopian society (think Rip Van Winkle in the digital-cloud age).

The storyline doesn't exactly provide a structure for Prince's metaphysical funk (the Housequake-style floor-shaker The Gold Standard) and falsetto soul (This Could B Us), but it's no weirder than imagining the boys vs. the girls in the World Series of love, as he did on 1987's U Got the Look.

Also, Prince remains enamored with electronically altered vocals, including one on Breakfast Can Wait that makes him sound like a duck.
Prince's 'Plectrumelectrum'

In some ways, PlectrumElectrum is the guitar-rock odyssey fans of tracks like Purple Rain and Sign "O" the Times' The Cross have always dreamed Prince would make. "You can call it the unexpected, or you can call it wow," he sings on the lead track. It's not completely unexpected — Prince has been posting 3rdEyeGirl videos, including a house-wrecking blues remake of Let's Get Crazy, for a while now — but PlectrumElectrum certainly has its "wow" moments.

The instrumental title track is a five-minute guitar workout that recalls early British hard rock, and Prince also lets loose at the end of Anotherlove. The women occasionally take the lead, as on AintTurninRound, but, as Prince sings on one song, "A girl with a guitar is 12 times better than another crazy band of boys."

Of the two albums, PlectrumElectrum has high points that are arguably better, at least for Prince's guitar fans, but it starts falling apart about halfway through. Art Official Age has an element of trainwreck wackiness that at least keeps it interesting. The albums share a song, FunkNRoll, that was recorded twice and ranks in the top half of material on each set.

Both Art Official Age and PlectrumElectrum are exciting at times, baffling at others, and it's hard to believe either couldn't have been better.

A Legitimately Magical Prince Album
By Ben Greenman

In 2010, Prince released an album, called “20Ten,” that ushered in the longest silence of his thirty-five-year career as a recording artist. For most of Prince’s creative existence, he’s put out an album a year, sometimes double and triple sets. After “20Ten,” though, came nothing. Well, nothing by Prince’s standards: plenty of singles trickled out, along with rumors about upcoming projects, but there was no major release. Then, earlier this year, he announced a return to Warner Bros. records, at first for the purpose of assembling a thirtieth-anniversary edition of “Purple Rain,” which would include outtakes and rare demos. This has not yet materialized. What has emerged is his first album of new material since “20Ten,” and the second: this week, Prince resurfaces with “Art Official Age,” a solo album, and “PlectrumElectrum,” a long-delayed collaboration with his all-female backing group, 3rd Eye Girl.

“PlectrumElectrum” is easier to understand and easier to dispense with, which doesn’t mean that it’s subpar, exactly. It’s a short rock record with plenty of guitar, and includes meditations on sex, self-empowerment treatises, and energetic songs about energy. The more ambitious songs often spotlight someone other than Prince. Hannah Ford, the band’s drummer, sings the plaintive ballad “Whitecaps,” and “Boy Trouble” is a strange flower of a song with an out-of-left-field speed rap.

The so-called solo record, “Art Official Age,” is considerably more interesting. For starters, Prince has dispensed with his typical “Produced, Arranged, Composed, and Performed by Prince” credit, the one on which much of his mystique as a one-man band and all-around genius was founded, and has shared production credit with Joshua Welton, who also happens to be Hannah Ford’s husband. Was this an admission by Prince that he needed another pair of ears? Was he in search of a more contemporary sound? The quasi-title track that opens the album (“Art Official Cage”) seems to suggest so. It’s a strange welter of E.D.M. clichés and Europop, with some gnomic lyrics, some grinding guitar, and some rapping. It’s a mess, provocative but not exactly successful; it sounds like a track that was left off Prince’s 1989 “Batman” soundtrack, updated for 20Fourteen.

But the rest of the album is easily Prince’s most coherent and satisfying record in more than a decade. In the past few years, the Prince songs that leaked online seemed to be less about paving the way for a new album and more about trolling the Internet. “Breakfast Can Wait,” a lithe and light funk number, was released with a cover photo of Dave Chappelle as Prince. Only a snippet of “This Could Be Us” leaked, but it was enough to confirm that Prince had written a song about a popular Internet meme that used a picture of him from his “Purple Rain” days. As proper singles started appearing, though, the album came into sharper focus. Songs like “Clouds” and “U Know,” slower and more repetitive than the kaleidoscopic funk-rock we’ve come to expect from Prince, suggested a new direction—a kind of gelatinous, futuristic R. & B.

These tracks worked in concert with the other singles to sketch out a theme: that technology separates us from those we’re close to, and even from ourselves; and that the lack of integration may well result in disintegration. “Clouds,” the second track on the album, which opens with the sound of a radio tuning, critiques the way the computer age offloads experiences to distant servers (that’s what the clouds are); the song instead prioritizes romance and human connection (“You should never underestimate the power of a kiss on the neck when she doesn’t expect a kiss on the neck”). It also folds in a well-constructed argument about the way the Internet era has encouraged empty exhibition and a half-baked argument about violence and bullying, before ending with a sci-fi monologue delivered by a British female voice that seems to suggest that Prince has been placed in some sort of centuries-long suspended animation.

“Clouds” is a kind of manifesto: “When life’s a stage in this brand new age / How do we engage?” Prince’s answer is to do a version of what he’s always done, which is absorb nearly every kind of music available and, via alchemic wizardry, turn it into something that produces thoughts and emotions. That’s even more evident on “U Know,” which is built on a sample of the singer Mila J’s “Blinded” and alternates wordy half-rapped verses about romantic misunderstanding and spiritual crisis with an irresistibly seductive chorus. The songs seem like R. & B., but they’re statements of deep unrest. Then the album hits a lull, with tracks that declare the power of music rather than demonstrate it, and insist on the superiority of the past. It’s grumpy-old-man music, done with plenty of panache. None of this, though, is sufficient preparation for the homestretch of “Art Official Age,” which is where Prince stops worrying about the future or the past and truly inhabits the present. Beginning with “What It Feels Like,” a duet with the singer Andy Allo, Prince delivers a series of ballads, broken up by interludes and a red-meat dance song, that are like nothing he’s done before.

It’s worth thinking about what it means for Prince to step into new territory. He has spent years trying to recapture pieces of his old self: the provocateur in black lingerie who got booed as an opening act for the Rolling Stones, the New Wave-inflected keyboard freak of “1999,” the motorcycle-riding rock god who ruled the world after “Purple Rain,” the tortured psychedelic introvert of “Around the World in a Day,” the jazzy genius of “Parade,” the pop polymath of “Sign O the Times,” the deeply divided spiritual pilgrim of “Lovesexy.” These old selves then became albatrosses. His albums of the late nineties and the past decade found Prince making gestures toward those personas without ever really inhabiting them again. And how could he? Here, for the first time, he suggests an alternative: maybe there’s an entirely new Prince music, possibly aided and abetted by Joshua Welton, that harnesses his talents and his vision. Maybe he’s not condemned to auto-pastiche.

The closing songs are hard to absorb at first. “Way Back Home” sounds sluggish for a while and then, suddenly, it sounds revelatory. It’s a self-portrait painted in the strangest and most accurate colors imaginable, a melancholy confession and bruised boast in which Prince cops to the fact that he’s out of place, out of sorts, pushed forward at times by desperation but “born alive” in a world where most people are “born dead.” And “Time,” which runs for nearly seven minutes, is a love song, briefly lickerish, that’s mostly about the loneliness of the road. In both cases, Prince brings the tempo way down, focusses on the nuances of his melodies, shares the spotlight with female vocalists, weaves in motifs from earlier songs from the album, and adds a steady supply of surprising touches (such as the superbly funky, if subdued, horn outro to “Time”).

The ballads are broken up by “FunkNRoll,” a straightforwardly exciting party song that also appears on “PlectrumElectrum,” but the version here serves the album’s over-all message—it’s knotty, both playful and eerie, with sonar-like sound effects that create a sense of distance and mediation. The closing track, “Affirmation III,” is a haunting reprise of “Way Back Home.” And while it’s abstract (the clipped, angelic backing chorus, which seems to be on loan from Laurie Anderson, is even more prominent), it’s also concrete. For the first time in years, Prince seems not just carnal but corporeal. Way back on “Controversy,” he challenged categories: “Am I black or white? Am I straight or gay?” By the time of “I Would Die 4 U,” the challenge had turned to taunting: “I’m not a woman / I’m not a man / I am something you can never understand,” and then, messianically, “I’m not a human.” Here, he presents himself as something understandable and fully human. In “Breakfast Can Wait,” he pleads with his lover that she can’t “leave a black man in this state.” But that black man is in this state: he’s in his fifties, grappling with loneliness, aging, creative inspiration, self-doubt, a shifting cultural landscape, and love. As luck would have it, he’s also Prince.

Will finish listening to PE later... but I'll say this:

This isn't the grand return that I think folks are going to make it out to be, but both records are far more interesting (and listenable) than anything I've heard from him since... idk, it's been a while.

So much more, in fact, that I'll give my full track-by-track review on at least AOA once I've given both records a few more spins...

Poor Maya. Prince threw her out there with no script and no prep. She was out of her element and came off looking bad.

The Massive Highs and Lows of Prince's Paisley Park Live Stream Celebration

By Colin Stutz | October 01, 2014 1:31 AM EDT
Prince at Essence Fest 2014

Prince celebrated his release of two albums Tuesday -- Art Official Age and PlectrumElectrum with 3rdEyeGirl -- with a live-streaming event that night, taking viewers inside his Paisley Park estate for a tour and much anticipated concert.

The one-and-a-half hour program streamed on Yahoo's Live Nation channel kept the focus on The Purple One's iconic history and modern work with his band 3rdEyeGirl. All the while, the artist everyone tuned-in to stayed at an arm's length and viewers waited through extensive interviews with collaborators around his Minnesota studio complex.

Prince Talks Tech, Talent & His Own Slice of Musical 'Heaven'

But all was forgiven when Prince took the stage, even calling Kendrick Lamar out for a guest performance to everyone's surprise. The set brought all the great promise of an energetic hometown show -- not only celebrating Prince's new releases but his continued legacy of excellence -- but all excitement turned to disappointment when the broadcast was ended suddenly after only three songs. The Internet at once experienced a massive WTF moment:

The whole episode was a roller coaster ride, for sure. Here are the highs and lows of Prince's Paisley Park live stream celebration:

High:
Basically anytime there was music, it was for the best. Whether that meant footage of Prince and 3rdEyeGirl jamming during a standard 12-hour recording session or NPGQ playing smooth late-night jazz, this really was what the people tuned in for.

Low:
Host Maya of the "Shameless Maya" vlog was entirely out of her element, neither showing any supreme knowledge of Prince and his work nor skills as an interviewer. To be fair, speaking engagingly in front of a camera for about an hour straight is not a simple task. But any minute without her on camera was a relief. The only thing that's less clear than how she got this job is how she got the job shooting Prince's Art Official Age cover artwork, which she repeatedly made note of during the nearly information-free tour of Paisley Park.

High:
Prince's engineer Joshua Welton playing some peaks of new material, including collaborations with Kendrick Lamar and Rita Ora on one incredible slow, sexy tune from the boss man himself. Prince called on the studio phone during this and said of Lamar, "Lord have mercy... he's a bad man." And of Ora and the dense, swaggering rock-heavy track with a fierce chorus, he said "we have to petition her record company perhaps" for its release.

Low:
A drawn-out Q&A with the women of 3rdEyeGirl and Maya with fans with special access for the event, who proved to be more adept at asking questions than the host herself. One takeaway: There's not much fun to have in Minnesota.

High:
Drummer Hannah Ford let it slip that a tour may be coming up. It went down as she was going through her and fellow 3rdEyeGirl members' stage outfits saying they were looking forward to taking the clothes on the road.

Low:
The 10 minutes of waiting for Prince to take the stage filled by host Maya awkwardly dancing in the audience, trying to unfortunately engage with fans, sometimes lip-syncing along to the lyrics of Art Official Age in dramatic pantomime.

High:
Prince's performance. Opening with the 3rdEyeGirl track "Pretzelbodylogic," Prince wore big black sunglasses, a vest and massive gold chains around his neck, jumping from guitar to keys mid-song as he and his bandmates brought a heavy dose of rock to the amped audience.

Excitement swelled when Kendrick Lamar joined the group for "What's My Name" from the Crystal Ball box set, spitting rhymes over the song's hard funk riffs.

And then, joined by Liv Warfield, Prince played the downtempo "Time," focusing on the Art Official Age ballad's smooth and soulful vibe.

Low:
That was it. There was nothing more. The end.

For those who missed it or want to relive the show, Yahoo will be replaying the entire video until Thursday.

Theme of Prince's new AOA is he's 45 years in the future. But 45 yrs from when? On the cover Prince is in front of platinum Purple Rain records and is wearing his classic round shades. 1984 being the year of Purple Rain and this album being a return to Warner Brothers, just makes sense it's 45 years from 1984.. which puts the year at 2029... Same year Apophis arrives. Prince playing with apocalyptic themes is always fun.

Of course the actual units sold suck, but that's the state of the music industry these days.

http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/newsPage.cgi?news10115

"The artist currently known as Prince, formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince, sees two debuts in the Top 10 this week. His funk-heavy solo release, Art Official Age, bowed at #5 with 43k, while the rockier Plectrumelectrum, a result of his side project with distaff band 3rdeyegirl, bowed at #10 with 21.5k. Both albums were released through NPG/Warner Bros."

Prince needs to get back together with all the members of The Revolution and make a surprise reunion album that'll put him back on top. Realistically that ain't gonna happen, but it would be a good idea as far as revitalizing his career and helping him appeal to the young bloods who aren't schooled on who he is.

How is it dumb as hell? I'm entitled to my opinion. If you are going to be a troll and come back with a hate-filled, unintelligible comment: "this sounds dumb as hell" at least provide your reasoning on this matter or provide your own take, or don't respond at all. It would be cool for Prince and The Revolution to get together- especially for die hard Prince fans.

Indeed....Revolution reunions are not what's up...

Let's be real....If people believe that an artist who is nearly 40 years into his career is showing an inability to sell 100,000 his first week is proof that the youth r not fucking with Prince then they are not looking at the whole picture...

It's been proven time and time again....Prince will go down as one of the singular talents of the last 35 plus years; a visionary who basically delivered one of the greatest 10 year periods of any act whether it's the Beatles, Stevie, MJ, Joni M., Bowie, ect....

The problem is Prince is also a bit delusional and has shown he doesn't give one fuck....lol..He thinks he can just drop product and keep it moving...

Think about it. Dude drops his best album in years with Art Official Age...And what does he do? Leaks a few album cuts online, has a puzzling stream with Maya looking crazy and releases not one but TWO albums on the same day with little self-promotion....

That's classic Prince. The musical guest spot on SNL he's about to do with Chris Rock should have been done before the release. The video he was supposedly shooting, nowhere to be seen...The reason why Prince did well sales wise with previous '00 albums like Musicology, 3121, and LOtUSFLOW3R and MPLSoUND is he played the game...He appeared on talk shows; knocked out videos, did a string of interviews, and made himself visible to public whether through touring for the album or making a surprise guest spot...

I know from my recent dealings with some folks from Warner Bros. that they have been baffled by Prince's stand-offish energy with these latest projects...Even Barbara Streisand, who HATES doing interviews, was out there promoting her music doing Jimmy Fallon and talking to various media outlets....

The truth is Prince will be fine overall. He can still sell-out a 20,000 seater with just a week's notice. But if dude wants that novice 17 year old to know why he is one of the GOATS he has to chill with that mystery shit...

And as 15 once said, making your music/videos more available to the YouTube's of the world would help as well...

But we all know Prince don't care about that shit...lol...That's why he's fucking Prince....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Do I really need to state my reasoning at this point in time??

As someone stated above, you think regrouping an old as Revolution would bring young folks on board?

And who gives one fuck about getting young people on board anyways?

And you said Prince "needs.." Prince doesn't "need" anything.

That is why..Corey...I said your opinion sounds dumb as hell

trolling? get the fuck outta my face

don't let these dudes bully you into thinking otherwise.

i disagree of the impact it would have on the charts and the younger generation, but it would be nice to see that band back together.

Three weeks in and AOA still is keeping up its replay value.

Listening to this album from beginning to end has become standard procedure.

Plectrum Electrum not so much.

I'm still enjoying some of the cuts on this record a lot but there are few that I now skip on the regular.

All in all, I'm still very impressed by the overall effort of both of these releases.

Prince to Play Uninterrupted 8-Minute Jam on 'Saturday Night Live'

By Elias Leight | October 27, 2014 11:00 AM EDT

When Prince plays Saturday Night Live on Nov. 1, he will play one extra-long segment in the middle of the show.

As you're probably aware, most of the musical guests perform two separate songs on SNL, but Prince is not like most musical guests. Instead of two performances, he'll provide the audience with eight full minutes of unadulterated, commercial-free Purple glory.

Chris Rock will host the Nov. 1 episode, his first time hosting in 18 years. Prince has been back on SNL more recently -- he played the show in 2006. For his jam session, he'll be accompanied by his band 3rdeyegirl.

Prince has been in a 2-for-1 kind of mood recently. On Sept. 30, he released two albums: ART OFFICIAL AGE, largely a solo effort, and PLECTRUMELECTRUM, recorded with 3rdeyegirl. Both went to No. 1 on the R&B and Rock charts.

107. "Art Official Age/Plectrum Electrum, The Dream Factory of now."
In response to Reply # 0

Prince: Art Official Age/Plectrum Electrum, The Dream Factory of now. But will the (not so) little girls still understand?

It has been a while since Dirty Mind had critics wondering if the record buying public would take to Prince, given the stage show and costume of bikini briefs and leg warmers, high heeled boots, and tonguing your keyboard player as part of the act. Rolling Stone titled a Prince Dirty Mind era articled “..but will the little girls understand?” Prince later dressed it all up for more mass appeal and acceptance in later releases but still had his lead guitarist replicate fellatio on him during Computer Blue, from Purple Rain. Oh, how the little girls(and boys) understood.

It took collaborating with his band to get him from that rock myth to the afterglow of Around The World In A Day, the avante garde timeless music of Parade, and to wrap it all up in a ultimate statement of The Dream Factory...that he never released. Personnel in The Revolution had quit or was fired, depending on who’s story is told. The Dream Factory collaboration lead to what is determined by fans as his greatest release, Sign Of The Times. Almost 30 years later he does it again with the Dream Factory of now, Art Official Age–Plectrum Electrum. But will the (not so) little girls STILL understand?

By now our connection with Prince is so complete that we can become overbearingly critical or sympathetic. We comb over every guitar solo, grunt and moan with extreme prejudiced for a glimpse of the heralded 80’s-90’s greatness. For the most part, he’s played it smart. He kept going forward, letting others pine for past glories, while he continues to create current quieter ones.
The new music by Prince are released as two separate entities but they are one release in a sense. The full on collaborations from others on AOA/PE in his recent stead make these releases The Dream Factory of now. With the 1986 Dream Factory, he gave Wendy and Lisa the carte’ blanche to take leads, produce, and include their own ideas in a truly a collaborative effort with Prince. He does the same thing here, with satisfying results. Hell, it’s easy to lump the goodwill and accolades on the releases due to the four year drought of a purple music presence, but it is also the strength of many of the songs are some of the strongest in his catalogue since the early 90’s.

He gels with (“hotdamn I got n all girl band”-Salt n Peppa) 3rdeyegirl, other producers and singers, including cough lozenge needing Andy Allo rather than power vocalist Shelby, in particular, on several intimate and rock based songs from Art Official Age and Plectrum Electrum. Though filled with collaborations, it’s still wrapped in Princes bow, with refreshing material and an update to his sound. The added players and collaboration has worked for him and in his favor as this truly seems like a rebirth even though keeping in time with his affectations used in the past decades. The trademark screech is here and the opening chicken scratch rhythm guitar harkens back to Chic, Controversy and the 80’s, with the production pristine Paisley Park studio wizardry.

Given the usual bites of the purple rock, there is a specific melancholy that runs throughout the releases presented in not only the melodies in many of the songs but in Prince’s voice (which remains strong and expressive) and lyrics. Many songs appear as answers to his critics, fans, as well as revelations to where he is now and how he is coping with being Prince in this world that seemingly still does not understand him. This is what many have asked for in his output of late: substance and feeling. Of course dealing with Prince, amidst the substantive, you’re bound to find the off-kilter that makes a Prince release, well..a Prince release. And it’s abundant in the opening track of Art Official cage the exuberance end of the world party finality in Funk and Roll, the running conceptual theme of alienation, awakening from a deep sleep into an unfamiliar world in Affirmation I-III, the robotic Boy Trouble, and the schizophrenic past and current production values.

He welcomes ‘us’ back on the kitchen sink EDM tinged opener of Art Official Age as if it is the audience who’s been gone. And that’s a sign of what has happened with the cut from Warner Bros…the general public was gone, but Prince, like sexy, never actually left. He was still right there in his private Xanadu of Paisley Park creating and destructing music with roughly ten to fifteen releases. But with AOA and PE, it’s as if those releases never happened and we were asleep with him since the md-nineties, as if 1997-2010 didn’t happen. But it did, which is why we are bombarded with reminders of his past works amidst the new. Artificial age is Daft Punk with Nile Rogers in his own version of Get Lucky with guitar snatches of The Digital Garden, EDM (which is patched throughout the releases), and chicken scratch Controversy rhythm guitar. This leads us into the journey.

Clouds is a bouncy layered vocal with some Pink Cashmere acoustic guitar buried in the mix with ending keyboards reminiscent of If I Was The Man In Your Life from Musicology with and interlude setting the pace and concept of him awakening from suspended animation on the space station from Elysium. It appears that our Prince is now Ripley from Aliens, having been lost in space for 50 years or so and now awakened. But not content with being Ripley, he takes future android inspiration awakening alongide eclectic singer, Janelle Monet.

The true opener is WOW, from Plectrum Electrum, where after a blast of drums and guitar he reduces it all and greets us with a “Hello, how are you” and begins to tell us ‘You aint seen nothing yet’ and what he has up his sleeve in a pop rock rave up. And never had he stated feeling so unsure of himself on the lyrics of ‘I have to get myself together…I don’t know what’s come over me.”

The title instrumental track, Plectrum Electrum, cops the melody from Led Zeppelins’ The Ocean, and provides the centerpiece to the project, giving it the gravitas needed for rock legitimacy

The burst of EDM energy from Funk n Roll on both albums are the urgent double time rock and soul that recalls Baby I’m A Star on the rock tinged Plectrum Electrum version that blends the bands live push, while the Art Official Age version provides an Atari Space Invaders backdrop with the aliens heard via the walkie talkies from Signs and a traditional RnB tinge. Clsoing the Plectrum Electrum side gives it a finality that release needs as Plectrum Electrum opens with the pensive rock of Wow and ends with the swing of Funk N Roll. It’s a party in the future, in space..up there..where it counts.

He reaches deep for the thoughtfulness and melancholy of Breakdown, Time, Way Back Home, Whitecaps, Affirmation (I, II, III). The Breakdown has him reminiscing in a falsetto ending in a Beautiful Ones (and 3121’s The Dance) scream of torture, but finally coming to the calmness of the heart repeating “the closer to the break down, the closer we get” as if being torn apart in a relationship ends up bringing two together…. but not before stating “there’s a door that u can walk through where there used to be a wall” allowing a once big tall wall torn down for a loved one to leave on their own will while he turns away, showing the growth of allowing one to leave a relationship sans the power and control trip of manipulating for one to stay. But not before the the cold-blooded statement “Give me back the time back the time, you can keep the memories.” Nobody does a kiss off like Prince.

He seems to answer his critics and fans in the form of speaking to a love in his lyrics from Anotherlove. In previous songs such as Old Friends 4 Sale, he wrote about the criticism, here he acknowledges the past relationship or criticism that included the connection of “Our clothes, our hair” (an ode to his Dirty Mind manifesto Uptown, his version of utopia) and states “I’ve tried to be what you wanted, I’m tired” and finally tells them “If you don’t like it, find another love” with keyboards that recalls Cinnamon Girl, speaking to a lover or his critics, that with all the shit talking, he screams before kicking you out that though you think of him in any which way. He screams out that he remains “Still the best soul you’ve ever known!” ending in a blistering guitar solo expelling his anger and frustration in a guitar spit that seems like a catharsis of several years of frustration. Again, nobody does a kiss off like Prince.

Way Back Home finds him being out of place in the future and maybe the future is the current state of the world in the music scene and he feels alienated in it. His introspection in the song sends out a Neil Young open heart vibe recalling Powderfinger. The thoughtful Art Official Age side ending with Affirmation III, is almost a eulogy and rebirth given to him by alien technology from the Spielberg ending of AI, Laurie Andersons’ “O Superman” and lush Clare Fischer strings. At this point in Princes career, such a poignant ending is appropriate. Way Back Home shows his heart and vulnerability that rarely pops through these days but recalls tender moments from The Truth, Sometimes It Snows In April from Parade, and Reflection from Musicology. It’s a reflective, inspired personal song that gives a centerpiece given the plethora of the many sensual lust pieces and rock fervor from the PE moments.

Ainturninaround ends with feedback that recalls the final guitar whines of Computer Blue while the song Time starts off fatigued after Funk and Rolls party, and builds, becoming a throbbing funk bass lead song that is reminiscent of If The Kid Cant Make You Come and the ethereal 8 from Madhouse in the backdrop. It builds to a funk crescendo that’s akin to Ravel’s Bolero where he and cosinger Allo appear to reach orgasm, then recover with a horn outro likened to When 2 R In Love from Lovesexy. Telling is the lyric in which he states “chasing an animal half his age” with a wink. Is he commenting on this in self frustration or bragging to us about it, in response to comments about his conquests made over the years. Either way, it is him recognizing his funk roots with Do Me Baby rawness.

Fix Your Life Up recalls Chaos And Disorder telling us that “we get the dream that we deserve”
The Gold Standard recalls The Rainbow Children’s 1+1+1+1=, and even the gloomy narrator from The Rainbow Children gets down. With Tic-Tac-Toe, Stop This Train, and other contributions from 3rd Eye Girl, there is a dreaminess to some of the songs in tribute or imitation of Wendy and Lisa’s Dream Factory contributions. Prince is also dirty again, damn near filthy, on Breakfast Can Wait and with Andy Allo mentioning that Prince has no business writing on her walls on This Is What It Feels Like, evoking the lasciviousness of past songs even though on the Lets Work tribute, The Gold Standard, he says you don’t have to be dirty or wild to party as he did on 1999’s Dance Music Sex Romance. There are touches of the Beautiful Ones piano riffs in This Could Be Us that also recalls When Doves Cry in its subject matter and lyrics and there’s a RnB vibe that recalls disc two from his three cd set, Emancipation. Added to the past meets 3rdeyegirl is Mars, a forward moving sloppy metal punk akin to Sister from Dirty Mind that acknowledges his own past of standing outside of McDonalds, smelling the food he could not afford, leaving hungry and angry. How he came up with all these Dissociative Identity Disorder pastiches, bits and pieces of his whole career (and makes it work) is madness. Be prepared for the roller coaster, up and down ride of music as there are two endings. One poignant and another a rousing boom.

The religious preaching is non-existent, though he still has something to say regarding the state of the music world today:
“Girl with a guitar is twelve times better than another crazy band of boys Trying to be a star when your just another brick in the misogynistic noise”

..and though the comes on’s and lover man shtick remains, he opens himself up with several songs and personal lyrics, a return to funk, sex, rock straight up no chaser that fans wanted as well as collaborations to refresh his sounds. And it’s all wrapped up in a purple bow of weirdness of being in hibernation and released to the world of today. This isn’t a total throwback to the eighties (thank goodness) but a continuation of where one is at now. Letting others contribute and take a full part of the show has proven to be invigorating. Where once was a cry for the solo diy system of creating his music, this openness to others and their contributions has added an extra wallop to the music representing his giving a damn..again. At the very least, it seems like music he earnestly believes in.

But is it enough to satisfy the zeitgeist of today? Surely he has his minds on the charts or at least the youth of today with his comments made about hanging around old people. Is it enough to keep the (not so little, not just knee deep) girls understanding the once rock god? He isn’t giving his guitar head or pulling on the back of his boot (or as of late, his orthopedics) in mock euphoria, he is dressing like their granny (or Hendrix, depending on who ask) instead of adding a granny lace to a pimp hat ala When Doves Cry, (though he does refer back to his greatest hit, When Doves Cry alluding to his dove being now caged in This Is What It Feels Like) so its still up in the air if this is going to turn any heads with them or even the fellas regarding the musicianship.

This is Prince acknowledging his past, and his present. He is bringing you up to date while giving a personal statement as well as opening himself up, as he did with Dream Factory. It was beneficial to the music then as it is now. It of course will not have the same impact as an artist in his prime, but the impact it has on an artist after 30 years in the business, is a feat, as well as a pleasure. U2 once again has a release almost in tandem with the new Prince release and it has them expanding their sound and recording techniques and structure, distancing themselves from the somber Joshua, Tree that was released alongside the more dynamic Sign Of The Times. Though an earnest try, U2 loses out to Prince’s more exuberant and eclectic release while still remaining aware of his past music. Prince has driven off the rails here creating his Zooropa and with other songs from different band incarnations and other related artists (Funk and Roll being called Unexpected and recorded in a more RnB flavor from Liv Warfield his background singer) and Boy Trouble, Tic Tac Toe, creates a consistency recalls the melancholy Dream Factory and his 80s and early 90’s material, in a thoughtful concept album.

Though he is sure to display his thoughts on musicianship and the vulgar, left the religious preaching at the pulpit and appears inspired by the new members he has surrounded himself with. And this time they stayed in the fold, so it remains lively, not lonely. This is not Prince from 20 or 30 years ago, this is a Prince of now. New collaborators to reach a younger audience? I really don't think this will do that even with younger collaborators at this point. He has a gilded faithful, or “class” as he calls us, but with this new music collaboration after so many years, will the (not so) little girls STILL understand? He screams out ‘I don’t really care what y’all be doin!” in Funk and Roll so overall, I really don't think he gives a damn.

Art Offical Age/Plectrum Electrum=A
